Days of RemembranceThis month, WGBH commemorates the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I, and reveals evidence for a little-known story of the Holocaust during World War II, through the extraordinary research and superb storytelling of our documentary series American Experience and Nova.

Drawing on the latest scholarship, including unpublished diaries, mem-oirs and letters, The Great War is presented in six hours over three nights on American Experience, April 10–12 (pg. 13). The complex story of World War I unfolds through the voices of nurses, journalists, aviators and the American troops who came to be known as “doughboys.” The series explores the

experiences of African-American and Latino soldiers, suffragists, Native American “code talkers” and others whose participation in the war has been largely forgotten.

“The film is not only about what happened 100 years ago, but how what happened then transformed our nation and the world in ways still being felt today,” says American Experience Executive Producer Mark Samels. “There’s one America before the Great War, and another America after. By examining the war through the lives of individuals —some famous, most forgotten—we hope to have created a film that does justice to this incredibly rich story.”

The story of another group of individuals, almost forgotten during World War II, is dramatically told in Nova’s Holocaust Escape Tunnel, airing April 19 (pg. 17), marking the upcoming Holocaust

Remembrance Day. Vilnius, Lithuania was one of the most important Jewish centers in the world before 1941, when the culture was destroyed by Nazis who killed some 70,000 Jews. Nova followed an expedition of archaeologists as they probed the ruins of the death camp, filming as the team made a dramatic discovery—the exact location of a hidden underground tunnel dug by Jewish prisoners.

The news made international headlines, and was designated by The New York Times as a top science story of 2016. Nova Senior Executive Producer Paula Apsell says, “This discovery is a stunning example of how modern technology has enabled us to bring to life a legendary lost civilization, to learn the truth of what happened, and to preserve a lasting and undeniable record of a dark time in history.”

Telling the stories of all Americans, and recording as science reveals the historical record of a culture—these are the meaningful programs that only WGBH and public media bring you. Thank you for being a partner in making them possible.

Kids Just Want to Have FunBased on the best-selling children’s books by Marc Brown, Arthur is about exploring the world and helping kids find their place in it. The week of April 10, during Autism Awareness Month, Arthur and the gang learn a lot from their new pal Carl, who has Asperger’s syndrome. Because of that, Carl sees the world differently than most people. With Carl, the friends can still be creative, make good choices and take responsibility for them, help each other out, and just have fun being kids!ArthurWeekdays at 1:30pm on WGBH 2

Holy Week ReexaminedThe Bible paints a picture of Jesus as a local preacher who ran up against the Roman rulers in Jerusalem and paid for it with his life. But new evidence gathered from archaeological research, Roman historians and Jewish texts offers a different image of Christianity’s savior—as an astute leader with ties to the most power-ful people in Rome. This extraordi-

nary docudrama—filmed in Israel and Italy—presents unique insights to help uncover the explosive Roman politics that ultimately led to Jesus being nailed to the cross. Last Days of JesusTues, 4/4 at 8pm on WGBH 2

AftermathRaw and revealing, Newtown uses deeply personal, never-before-heard testimonies to tell the story of the aftermath of the deadliest mass shooting of schoolchildren in American history. Filmed over the course of nearly three years, this documentary chronicles a trauma-

tized community still reeling from the senseless killing, fractured by grief but driven toward a sense of purpose. Newtown shows what happens to a community after it becomes the epicenter of a national discussion and how it copes after the cameras leave. Independent Lens/NewtownMon, 4/3 at 9pm on WGBH 2

War to End All WarsWorld War I began with the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and erupted across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Commemorating the 100th anni-versary of America’s entry into the war on April 6, 1917, The Great War draws on unpublished diaries, memoirs and letters to explore the conflict that shaped the 20th century. This six-hour documentary tells the complex story through the voices of nurses, journalists, American soldiers and others whose participation in the “the war to end all wars” has been largely forgotten. Tunnel to FreedomIn the former Soviet republic of Lithuania, the capital Vilnius was once an epicenter of Jewish culture. But during the Holocaust, 95% of Lithuanian Jews were imprisoned and killed. Hidden within this tragedy is a story of hope and courage that archeologists are just now bringing to light. Cutting-edge technology is revealing a Holocaust escape tunnel where brave prisoners dug their way to freedom outside Vilnius. For the first time in history, their heroic story is being told. Bringing You the WorldThe World Channel offers the best of PBS news and nonfiction programming, along with exclusive series like AfroPop, Global Voices, Voces and Pacific Heartbeat. World also produces such original series as Local, USA, featuring diverse stories culled from public television stations and independent producers

nationwide, and the award-winning America ReFramed, a showcase for inde-pendent films by and about communities of difference. This month World Channel offers films that explore the theme of community.

Data and the PeopleToday, science isn’t done in labs anymore, and corporations and governments aren’t the only ones collecting data. Smartphones and mobile technology are enabling regular citizens to become part of a 21st century way of solving

problems by helping profes-sional scientists speed up dis-covery and innovation. In this four-part series, former NASA Chief Scientist Waleed Abdalati takes a look at the projects and people on the front lines of this disruptive transformation and shows the ways in which any-one, anywhere can participate. The Crowd & The CloudEvery Thu at 9pm

Marching On This award-winning documentary series recounts the fight to end decades of discrimination and segregation in America. In Then and Now, filmmakers reexamine the series by placing the civil rights movement under a micro-scope and reframing key questions in a contemporary way. While there have been victories to celebrate, the country continues to be plagued by some of the same problems of race. What does it mean for the next generation?Eyes on the PrizeSun, 4/23 at 2:30pm, 4/30 at 3pm

Graffiti and Hawaii What happens when you combine modern graffiti art with ancient Hawaiian culture? Street artists Estria Miyashiro and John Hina embark on their own personal journeys to rediscover their identities as Hawaiian artists. Together

they create a mural that addresses the effects of environmental changes and encroaching modern-ization on their native culture. Learn how a new generation of Native Hawaiian artists, educa-tors and youth benefits from the transformative power of art.

Holocaust Survivor as ArtistHarry is a renowned post-impression-ist painter who escaped the Holocaust as a teenager. Now, at 90 years old and living in a desert community in the Southwest, he reveals for the first time the details of what he saw and how he escaped. Diagnosed with a terminal condition, Harry speaks with remarkable eloquence and his-torical detail. Rather than hold onto hatred, he continues to find the beauty in life through his art. Local, USA/Portrait of Harry Mon, 4/24 at 9pm

Life in the MiddleNew York Times journalist Bob Herbert narrates a story about the difficulty African-Americans have when trying to maintain a middle class standard of living. The devastating effects of the Great Recession and housing foreclosure

crisis, which hit blacks much harder than whites, left the black middle class virtually on life support. Using historical footage and a series of deeply per-sonal interviews, this doc-umentary shows why this tragic state of affairs still exists a half-century after the civil rights movement.

Against All Odds: The Fight for a Black Middle Class Tues, 4/25 at 9pm

World is produced and distributed by WGBH Boston, American Public Television and WNET/New York in association with PBS and the National Educational Telecommunications Association.

Honoring Ella Two days before Ella Fitzgerald’s 100th birth-day, Eric Jackson celebrates the centennial of the First Lady of Song’s birth by showcasing her Grammy Award-winning music and honoring her legacy as the most popular female jazz singer in the US for more than half a century.Sun, 4/23 at 9pm

Andris Nelsons Plays for Greater Boston Earlier this winter, WGBH’s Greater Boston featured an exclusive performance by one of Boston’s best known musical influencers, Andris Nelsons, music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

A regular fixture onstage at Symphony Hall, where he conducts the BSO, this was Nelsons’s first time playing the trumpet publicly. His interview followed the BSO’s second-straight win at this year’s Grammy Awards, this time for its performance of Shostakovich: Under Stalin’s Shadow. Nelsons was joined on set for a lively duet at WGBH

with the BSO’s Principal Trumpet Thomas Rolfs. “If they give a Grammy for trumpet duets, Nelsons and Rolfs are a walk,”

said Jim Braude, host of Greater Boston.Watch the performance at news.wgbh.org/greater-boston.

Out of Gitmo with Arun RathIn February, Frontline released a one-hour report about Guantanamo Bay featuring WGBH News and NPR correspondent Arun Rath. The two-part film, Out of Gitmo and Forever Prison, respectively, examines the release of “indefinite detainees” at Guantanamo Bay and the little-known history of how the military base became a place where the government said it could hold people beyond the reach of US law.

Rath has been covering Guantanamo Bay for years and was the only public media journalist reporting from there for the recent hearings for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-proclaimed mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks.

“Arun has followed this story doggedly throughout its many complexities and challenges,” said Kate Zachry, WGBH news director. “His work exemplifies WGBH’s commitment to substantive journalism at every level: local, national and global.”

For the film’s first segment, Out of Gitmo, Rath follows the trail of one of the most recently released detainees from Guantanamo Bay to Serbia, where the government sent the former terror suspect. Rath’s reporting continues in the second segment, Forever Prison, which draws on extensive and rare archival footage to document the history of the base, which began a decade before 9/11. Throughout his reporting, Rath talks with officials inside the camp and in Washington, DC, including former US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel.

It’s Time to Get Out… and Take WCRB with youBy Anthony Rudel 99.5 WCRB Station Manager

April has always seemed to be the month that decisively declares the end of winter. We know that many of you take this time to enjoy the great

outdoors. But, we don’t want you to be without your favorite radio station and the amazing music that makes your day great.

The WCRB app is the perfect way to take us with you. It’s free and available for both iOS and Android devices. Simply go to your app store, search WCRB, and download.

April also brings the beginning of the baseball season, and WCRB will mark the Red Sox Opening Day on April 3 with performances from our home-town musical heroes. Be ready for a daylong parade of hits from the likes of the Boston Symphony, the

Handel and Haydn Society, Yo-Yo Ma, and the Boston Pops, along with many other hometown artists and ensembles.

And, what can be more Boston than Patriots Day? It’s another uniquely Boston cele-bration, especially because it includes the running of the Boston Marathon on April 17. Research has shown that long-distance running involves developing a running cadence, a concept that intrigued the WCRB music staff. To test the idea, we gathered some runners and played different classical music for them to see if we could come up with a playlist.

Although not everyone runs to the same beat, we found that most runners appreciate the incredible energy great classical music can provide. Thus was born the WCRB Boston Marathon Running Playlist, a collection of inspiring music to keep you moving for hours. If want a burst of Beethoven

What’s on WCAI Online: capeandislands.orgOn-air: 90.1 Martha’s Vineyard, 91.1 Nantucket, 94.3 Brewster, 89.7 HD3 Boston

WCAI’s pub nights with a twist have been really popular. We began the tradition of pub nights in 2003 as a cure for cabin fever in the winter months when things can get pretty quiet. Point Producer Amy Vince remembers how they got started:

“Susan Loucks was the development director at the time, and we talked about the size of our geographic listening area and how tough it would be for many listeners to get to us. So we decided to go to them.”

We have been inviting listeners to join us at different venues across the listening area to meet the hosts, reporters, producers and staff of WCAI and to meet other NPR listeners.

This year we decided to add a twist: program-related themes.

Development Director Sarah Tribuzio brainstormed with other staff members to create the various events, including a poetry slam, WCAI trivia quiz, Guess the Science Sounds, and Local Food Celebrates Spring with a seed share.

“We have such a creative staff, and there were a lot of great ideas. Our final pub night takes place on Nantucket and celebrates Bird News. Mark Faherty will test our avian knowledge with a fun bird quiz.”

While listeners tell us they really enjoy putting faces to the voices they hear, WCAI staff say it is great to meet the listeners who make public radio possible. Living Lab Producer Elsa Partan looks forward to pub night:

“The best part for me is meeting our listeners and finding out what fasci-nating people they are and what a broad range of interests they have.”

This season wraps up at Atlas on Nantucket on April 26 from 5pm to 7pm.
