On College Hill The Official Publication of the St Laurence's College Old Boys' Association December 2016 From the President - Denis Brown (1959) The year commenced with the Annual General Meeting which saw the previous Executive Committee being joined by a number of new committee members. These included former College Captain and Vice-Captain from 1984, Jim Hefferan and Antony Raiteri. Ian Leavers and John Dinnen were also welcomed to the Committee. Long standing contributors, John O’Brien and Di Taylor, again made valuable contributions throughout the year. The influx of new committee members saw new ideas being brought to the fore. This resulted in myself laying a wreath at the Anzac Day service held at the College in April. Another innovation was to sponsor the Facere et Docere award presented at Speech Night, an initiative which will continue on an annual basis. Filipe Afu was a worthy recipient of this award as he epitomised the School Motto – Facere et Docere – to Do and to Teach. Congratulations to Filipe. The Senior Old Boys’ Luncheon was held in August and saw approximately 90 men who had left the College at least 50 years earlier gathering at ERPAC. Numerous stories were exchanged and those in attendance marvelled at the recent developments at the College including the new Chapel opened earlier in the year. The Association was delighted to contribute to the donation of the Edmund Rice Bust which now adorns our wonderful new Chapel. An annual dinner was not conducted this year but in its place the Association combined with the Music Department Support Group to celebrate Jazz on the Hill. A wonderful evening of fine music, wine and friendship was shared by all. Thanks to committee member David Turnbull for making the evening a success. The College certainly has produced some marvellous musicians and the Principal is to be commended for fostering this interest within the school. This year saw the resumption of a presentation by the Association to the departing Grade 12 students. The presentation was made by Jim Hefferan and Antony Raiteri. It is intended this will occur annually so that students departing the College are fully aware of the Association and its objects and operations. The Association extends its thanks to Jim and Antony as well as Peter Wendt who assisted in the production of the audio-visual to accompany the presentation. This year sees the departure of Ian McDonald from the College after many years of service. The Association wishes him all the best in the future and thanks him for his contribution to the Association over many years. The Association welcomes a new relationship with the incoming Principal Chris Leadbetter (a fellow Christian Brothers’ Old Boy). On behalf of the Association I thank all committee members and others involved in the various functions and activities throughout the year. Other activities involving Old Boys included: Class Reunions Annual Sports Day, this time hosted by Marist Ashgrove, which saw the First XVs from 1956, ‘66 and ‘76 in attendance The Old Boys’ and Community Choir Concert The Annual Old Boys v First XI Cricket Match (chalk up another one to the Old Boys) – thanks as always to Old Boys Stephen Leszczynski and Cameron Wigan for making this a great day on the calendar each year.

I particularly want to thank the College for the innovation of having the Development Manager assist the Association withadministration and particularly thank Helen Turner for her tireless efforts in this regard. In closing I encourage all Old Boys to seek to become involved in the Association either as committee members or byattendance at functions. In 2017, keep an eye out for the Back to Runcorn Day (May), the Old Boy Weekend (August) andthe numerous class reunions. All events get posted to our website; www.slcoldboys.com.au. Your feedback and suggestions are welcomed as to how the Association can continue and expand its efforts in the future. The Association particularly looks forward to welcoming the graduating class of 2016. Please note the Annual General Meeting of the Association will be held at the College on 7 February 2017. If you areinterested, I encourage you to get involved with the Committee. Foundation Update - Rob Siganto (1986)

In 2016, through the generosity of the Old Boy’s we have achieved the $1,500,000 milestonewith our asset base under investment. This investment base enabled us to present thefoundation’s cheque for $40,000 to Ian McDonald at the College General Assembly. Thesefunds will provide bursaries to directly assist in the education of eight boys at the collegeincluding sons of Old Boys. This is a proud achievement for all of those who have contributedto the foundation as trustees, as donors and as recipients over the last 30 years. If you would like to donate and help other boys and their families, contact the College

Development Office on (07) 3010 1178 or via email at [email protected]. Merry Christmas and all the best for 2017. Regards Rob

Beyond the Gates..... John van Watershoot(1976) Beyond the Gates, what does that mean? Really? It is that you have finished school at SLC and left itbehind, took up a career of some description asoccurred with me some 40 years ago now? Back in myday, I did double maths and one unit involved computing.

I got “hooked” to say the least and ended up doing a Computer Science degree at QIT / QUT. I was then offered work inCanberra where I have lived ever since. I am now retired but where does SLC still fit in? Initially, it did not – I was born with Cerebral Palsy and whilst my fellowclass mates had tie up shoes, mine were buckles. Yes, I may have been different, but I was accepted.

Page 3: On College Hill

A few months ago, I travelled to Brisbane to speak to Year 8 students who are part of the PEAK Performance program atthe College. They may have some issues, but they were delightful – pleasant and well-mannered boys. But it was 1975 that changed my life. Apart from the computer maths unit, I later that year received a Bursary from theOld Boys’ Association. It was a cheque for $100. WOW! Now, the amount by today’s standard may not seem huge, butback then it was life changing. As an example, I could get a bus fare for FIVE CENTS. So, what am I saying? Do you need that latte or cappuccino today? Maybe not every day but today? I have no idea ofBrisbane prices anymore, but one missed coffee could make a huge change to a young person’s life. I now donateregularly to the Foundation because I both can and want to. That coffee, a very small (tax deductible by the way) donationcould have a huge impact on someone’s life and maybe even yours in the future. A donation, whatever the size, to the Foundation would, I am sure, be most welcome. AND, it might change a youngperson’s life. You just never know. John van Waterschoot (1976)

Facere et Docere Award The Facere et Docere award is presented to a student who is an exemplary role model andsomeone who commits himself to the guiding principles of the College including Service toall areas of College life, Respect and Courtesy, Presentation, Involvement and Support ofOthers. This year’s worthy recipient is Filipe Afu. Considered the ‘Heartbeat of the Grade’, Filipe isnaturally gifted as a strong academic performer, wonderful musician and a dedicatedscholar. In 2016, Filipe was appointed a College Prefect, Music Vice Captain and Chairmanof the Cultural Committee. Congratulations Filipe on being the inaugural recipient of the Old Boys' Facere et DocereAward.

60 Seconds with........Mark Dutton (1995)

First job after leaving the College? Working on the holidays with my Uncle Henk building carports while I wasstudying at QUT

What is your fondest memory of the College? I am lucky to have so many, every memory revolves around the amazing mates Imade at SLC and still have. Whether rugby, parties, or just day to day schoolwith mates, those times were priceless! Describe what you are doing now (work and personal)? I am married to my lovely wife Grace and I have three boys, Mark, Michael andRiley. As for work, my current role is Race Team Manager of Triple Eight RaceEngineering (Red Bull Racing Australia & Team Vortex), we are a Supercar Teamthat competes in the Australian Supercar series.

How did you get into your current role (and any major influences)? I got into motorsport easier than most, having answered a call for applications

Page 4: On College Hill

from a V8 Supercar team in my final year of Uni, however that is where the easy stopped. For over a decade I have beenworking 12-14 hr days at a minimum. Been lucky enough to have worked with amazing people, the two major influenceshave been Roland Dane (Team Owner) and Jamie Whincup (Most Supercar Championships ever). Roland’s extremedemands and expectations on the whole team, showed me attention to detail, and that I needed to focus the traits I hadpicked up from my parents. Hard work from Mum and dream big from Dad. When I partnered with Jamie as his raceengineer, we became like brothers, we pushed each other to be better and achieve more.

What do you enjoy the most about your current role? I enjoy being part of a team, and am lucky enough to have a leadership role. I love winning, and being able to be humbleabout it.

What qualifications/ experience did you need for your role? I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering and until recently was a Race and Design Engineer. What is the most challenging aspect of your role? The commitment required is massive, you can’t consider it as a job you have to think of it as not just what you do, butwhat you are. What do you consider to be your greatest personal/ professional achievement? I have been fortunate enough to be part of building a team which went from having not a single trophy, into the leadingmotorsport team in Australia for the last decade. The team’s achievements are of a level that are truly world class andinternationally respected. What is your favourite pastime outside of work? I don’t actually get a lot of time outside work, I try and spend it with my kids, family and friends. I struggle to sit still, so Iam always working on something. Finally, what advice would you give to someone wanting to be successful in their chosen field? Sacrifice, and hard work. Decide how successful you want to be, and adjust how much you sacrifice. If you want to be thebest, you will have to sacrifice more and work harder than your competition, every field is competitive, sporting or other.Combine this with the values your parents and Laurie’s taught you… simply be a good bloke (person). To get to the topyou don’t have to walk on others. Thanks Mark and all the best for the 2017 season.

Jazz on the Hill... Old Boys on Show This year the Association made a show at the Jazz on the Hill, anevent organised and run by the Music Supporters Group to fund raisefor the Laurie's Music Program. A special ticket organised for OldBoys saw a good handful of Old Boys and their families swell the

Page 5: On College Hill

attendance. In addition to the talented old boys that formed the band "Dad's Joke"(who rocked the night out and managing to get the crowd up anddancing on the Hill), a few of our Middle-Aged Old Boys volunteered atthe event behind the bar and BBQ. Old Boy's businesses Fortitude Brewing Company and Angove Winesprovided top-notch beverages for the event. The Association was made visible with a display showcasing plannedOld Boy's Events for the coming year with two Old Boys on hand

throughout the night answering questions from parents and future Old Boys. The display also included a select group ofSLC and Old Boy’s paraphernalia for sale. We hope to continue this display at future events, where possible, including School Sporting, Music and Social Events,School Open Days and of course Old Boys Events. David Turnbull (1988)

Welcome to our newest Old Boys... The Class of 2016 Congratulations to the Graduating Senior Class of 2016.The Association welcomes them as our newest SLOBs.Recently we wrote to each of them outlining theAssociation and how they can keep in contact as theycontinue their journey in life. Old Boys Presentation to Year 12 Students On Friday 7 October, the Old Boy Association and Foundation presented to the current Year 12 cohort about theirorganisations and the opportunities available to the graduating class.Antony Raiteri and Jim Hefferan’s presentation onbehalf of the Old Boys Association stemmed from their own history as former College Captain and Vice-Captain from1984. Similarly, Will Siganto and Monica Layton, on behalf of her husband Allan Layton and for the Old Boys Foundation, alsospoke about Allan’s Lauries Journey and how he may not have been able to attend the College without the support of theBrothers. Both presentations provided a personal insight into the importance of the organisations and opened the student’seyes to the possibilities of engaging with them.

Page 8: On College Hill

All Old Boys were saddened by the news of the passing of former Teacher, Mentor, Supporter and Honorary SLOBA LifeMember Paul "Woody" Forrester. As Old Boys we thank Woody for his contribution over 30 years for shaping us as the truemen of Edmund Rice. The final words sum it up from Antony Raiteri (1984) ...."Paul, it's often said that Laurie's boys are unique in their no frillsattitude to life and their passion, to pursue their dreams. I think that’s very much along the lines of the example you set, theway you taught and your passion for the things you believed in. If I was to nominate someone who was the architect of StLaurence's culture, Paul Forrester, you would be that man. Congratulations on an outstanding career and thank you for yourenormous contribution to St. Laurence's College. You are a true champion". Thanks Woody!!! There is a lovely piece on the Old Boys website about Paul's life and contribution to what makes Lauries great today.

Old Boys in the News.............. "THERE were no rule books when a group of lifesavers first started throwing themselves out of helicopters flown byVietnam War veterans to rescue swimmers off Gold Coast beaches, 40 years ago. Their extreme lifesaving techniques, which included knocking themselves unconscious to practise resuscitation, woulddevelop into the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service, one of the world’s leading civilian rescue services. “We were all younger blokes who had adventure and a lot of military pilots that supported us,” Danny Hoyland, one of theinaugural 1976 crew, told the Bulletin. “It was all trial and error.” Old Boy Danny Hoyland (1970) as quoted in the Gold Coast Bulletin in June this year incelebrating 40 years of the Westpac Helicopter. Danny is still currently the Vice-President of the Coolangatta SurfLifesaving Club. You can read the full article here. Old Boy Tom Fowke (2008) also appeared in the Gold Coast Bulletin in December in an action shot for the CurrumbinCoal Trains Surf Boat racing. You can read the full article here. Congratulations to 1978 SLC College Captain Professor Mike Keppell on being appointed as Pro Vice Chancellor atSwinbourne University. Aside from Mike's academic achievements he also represented Australia in under 16 rugby and theQueensland Schoolboys as an extremely fit, tough inside centre. Perhaps most notably though, Mike was a graduate of Woody Forrester's renowned/notorious 1976 10D class, it is a realshame that Woody is not around to see Mike's latest achievement.

College Sporting Update In the final sporting newsletter for 2016, Sportsmaster Eddie Wallaceprovided his assessment of how well the program at the Collegeis travelling. When the results for each sport are added together St. Laurence’sretains our position in 2nd overall. A commendable effort considering thelimitations on our program in regards to facilities, weather events out ofour control and internal policy changes that may have hurt short term

results in some sports but will ultimately strengthen our longer term results across our whole sports program. While taking these points into account the overall result is still below our long term sporting ‘result’ goal for the College andclearly shows the improvement we can make. Included below is the aggregate results for the AIC competitions for2016. Many sports need to be commended when you think there is currently no pool or gym for the boys to train andcompete on campus.
