Dear Confreres,

Fr. Estêvão Mauricio Atanasio, who has recently professed his vows at the intreprovincial novitiate Our Lady of
Guadalupe, in Vila Nova, Porto Alegre RS, has been destined to Province St. Charles. Fr. Estêvão, who is already
familiar with our reality in the United States, now as a new member of our congregation, has been destined as Parochial Vicar at St. Anthony Church in Valencia, Venezuela, where he will study Spanish. Fr. Estêvão Mauricio
was ordained a diocesan priest in Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 2009.
Deacon Heribertus Afandi will be ordained to the priesthood on July 13, 2017 in Ruteng, Indonesia. Destined to
our Province, he will initially study Spanish in Bogota.
The religious of perpetual vows Dat Le Duc from the Theology of Bogota has been destined to our province.
Fr. Sergio Geremia, after three and a half years as Spiritual Director of the Seminaries in Bogota, Colombia, has
returned to the Region Our Lady Mother of Migrants and he is already working at the Migration Ministry in Florianópolis, SC, Brazil.
“Every missionary is called to promote and form vocations. Prayer, along with personal and community witness of
brotherhood and of apostolic life, are indispensable means for promoting vocations.” (Rules of Life # 95; 96 §1)
A priest of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin in Liguria, Italy, Fr. Andrea Caruso, O.F.M. Cap., asked Pope Francis,
"How should we live and face the general decline in vocations to priestly life and consecrated life?"
Among other things, Fr. Francis answered:
"The decline in vocations is a demographic problem. If there are no young people, there will be no vocations. It was
easier in times of larger families to have vocations. There is a decline that is also a consequence of the demographic
decline. It is not the only reason, but we must keep it in mind. The vocational crisis is a crisis that affects the whole
Church, all vocations: priestly, religious, lay, matrimonial... It is time to ask the Lord and to ask ourselves: what must we
do? What should we change? Vocation work is difficult, but it must be done. It is a challenge. We must be creative in
vocational work. Fidelity to the foundational charism. And when there are congregations that are faithful to the
foundational charism, but with that love that shows the current nature of that charism, its beauty, this attracts.
And then there is witness. If we want consecrated men and women, priests, we must bear witness that we are
happy, that we are happy. And that we come to the end of our life happy with the choice Jesus made of us. The witness
of joy, even in the way of life. One of the things young people today are looking for is the missionary dimension.
Apostolic zeal: to see in witness also a great apostolic zeal, that one does not live for himself, that he lives for others, that
he gives life, he gives life. And the people, the young people, ask for testimony of authenticity, apostolic zeal, harmony
with the charism. There is a need for pastoral conversion, for missionary conversion. This is a witness that will attract
vocations.
Then, there are vocations, God gives them. But if you – a priest or a consecrated person or a nun – are always
occupied, if you do not have time to listen to the young people who come, who do not come … the young are always on
the move: you must place them on a missionary path. Witness. This is the key. What does a young person thing when he
or she sees a priest, or a consecrated man or woman? The first thing he or she thinks, if there is some movement of the
Spirit: “I would like to be like her, like him”. There is the seed. It is born of witness. “I would never want to be like him!”
And there is the counter-testimony. Witness is given without words". (Pope Francis)
In light of this reflection of Pope Francis, I wish to all of you that these upcoming moths may present an opportunity
to rest and renew our strength and enthusiasm to return in September full of energy and continue our service to the
migrants and the people of God.
Fr. Moacir Balen, c.s.

2017 Interprovincial Assembly
From May 1 to May 5, 2017, the Provinces St. Charles Borromeo and St. John the Baptist held the
Interprovincial Assembly, in Toccoa, Georgia, with the participation of 107 Scalabrinian fathers from the two provinces.
On Tuesday, May 2, the Provincial Superiors, Fr. Moacir Balen and Fr. Clair Orso, welcomed all those who were present, declaring the assembly officially open. In the morning, Don Kerwin, from the Center for Migration Studies of New York, spoke about the migration reality in the United States, a theme particularly relevant, given the current political climate in the country. Following, the general councilor, Fr. Luis Antonio Díaz, presented the report from the general administration of our Congregation.
The afternoon was dedicated to the revision of the interprovincial directory. Each paragraph was read,
discussed and approved by those present from both provinces. This project was organized by the Secretaries of Religious Life, Fr. Edison Osorio and Fr. Carmelo Hernández. After the assembly, the updated interprovincial directory was submitted to the General Administration for final approval.
In the early evening, the Eucharistic celebration was
presided by the newly-arrived priests of the two provinces: from Province St. Charles, Fr. Julian Zapata Betancur, Fr. Nguyen Van Hoang and Fr. Gregorius Primus Ama Maia; from Province St. John the Baptist, Fr. Yoseph Albertman Sadipun, Fr. Ernest Celestin, Fr. Vincenslaus Ino and Fr. José Percy Cervera Araujo.
On Wednesday, May 3, in the morning, there was group work done by each area about the reality of the Scalabrinian parishes, in preparation for the meeting that will be held in Amora, Portugal, in September of this year.
Province St. Charles Borromeo Newsletter April/May 2017 7
In the afternoon, we went to visit Atlanta. The fathers could choose one of three options: the historic sites of Martin Luther King Jr., leader of the Movement of Civil Rights, the World of Coca-cola, ot the studios of CNN. At the end of the day, we visited Mission San Felipe de Jesús, where we celebrated Mass presided by Most Rev. Wilton D. Gregory, Archbishop of Atlanta, with the presence of the beautiful community of San Felipe. After Mass, the community of San Felipe prepared a delicious dinner, with cultural performances of music and dance.
Thursday, May 4, was dedicated for the activities of each individual province, including the reports of the Provincial Superiors, the financial reports, and the selection of the representatives of each province to attend the meeting about the reality of Scalabrinian parishes, in Portugal. We closed the day with Mass presided by the fathers who are celebrating jubilee of priesthood ordination this year.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all those who have helped to prepare this assembly: the volunteers, the provincial councilors, the secretaries of both provinces, the fathers from Atlanta, Fr. Jacques Fabre and Fr. Víctor Córdova, and the entire community of San Felipe who welcomed us with so much care and dedication. Our humble apologies for all the shortcomings, particularly in regards to transportation and the distance of the conference center. Thank you to all for you participation, prayer, support and understanding.
May Blessed Scalabrini and St. Charles Borromeo continue to intercede in the presence of God for both
Provinces St. Charles and St. John the Baptist.

First Vows of Fr. Estêvão Maurício Atanásio
Fr. Estêvão Mauricio Atanasio recently professed his first vows at the intreprovincial novitiate Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Vila Nova, Porto Alegre RS. He has been destined to Province St. Charles. Fr. Estêvão, who is already familiar with our reality in the United States, now as a new member of our congregation, has been destined as Parochial Vicar at St. Anthony Church in Valencia, Venezuela, where he will study Spanish.
Fr. Estêvão has shared with us a little about himself and his Scalabrian vocational journey so far:
“I was born on September 18, 1978, in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. When I was still very young,
I became orphan, but God sent my grandmother and three aunts to take care of my upbringing. My family
was always very Catholic, so I was under their guardianship and the tutelage of Cardinal Serafim
Fernandes de Araujo, a good man of God, a father figure.
My adolescence and youth were very difficult, but filled with God's presence, with family, relatives,
friends, and acquaintances. I took care of my grandmother and my three aunts until they passed away.
Still in my early teenage years, I became very actively engaged in the life of my parish community, as an
altar server, catechist, member do St. Vincent de Paul Society, member of the Apostolate of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus, bible study, Ainda antes da minha adolescência e depois jovem ja estava eu inserido na
comunidade, como coroinha, acólito, catequista, Vicentino, zelador do Apostolado do Coração de Jesus,
círculo bíblico, advisor of the Youth Ministry, delegate of Small Eccleasial Communities, along with Most
Rev. Luciano Mendes. These were moments of great enrichment. In 1996, I entered the diocesan seminary
and in 2005 I was appointed Spiritual and Social assistant of Clinic Our Lady of Copception in Belo
Horizonte, where we welcomed patients with terminal cancer, as well as HIV positive and people with
AIDS. All of this was a gift, a present from God. I worked at the José Fernándes de Araujo Foundation,
where we helped low-income students with scholarships. I also taught Philosophy and Sociology to high
school students.
On May 2, 2009, I was ordained to the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Pouso Alegre, Minas Gerais. I
worked as vicar and pastor in a few parishes in the cities of Borda da Mata, Congonhal, Senador José
Bento, Pouso Alegre and Distrito São José do Pântano, in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
In 2013, I was watching Pope Francis on TV, as he was speaking to the migrants arriving from Africa and
asking the European nations to welcome them. I felt challenged by that invitation. I contacted the
Scalabrinian missionaries and the Archbishop of my Archdiocese, and we agreed that I would have a time
a missionary and religious experience with the Congregation.
My first missionary experience was at St. Cecilia Church in Rio de Janeiro. Then, I went to missions in
Florida and New York, in addition to a brief time in Haiti, Colombia and Argentina. Finally, I returned to
Brazil, to the city of Cascavel, Paraná. In all these missions, I was able to minister in parishes and assist
migrants in many aspects. It was all very enriching and in accordance with God's will.
After one year of important formation and preparation to consecrate myself to the Scalabrinian
Congregation, I professed my first religious vows on June 1, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Church in
Vila Nova, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. It was a beautiful celebration, with the presence of the Regional Vicar,
Province St. Charles Borromeo Newsletter April/May 2017 13
Fr. Alexandre Biolchi, many other fathers, as well as family members and friends of the novices.
I was destined to Province St. Charles. First, I will go to the mission in Venezuela, to work and learn
Spanish, and then I will for to Florida, USA.
I pray that the Blessed Virgin Mary to intercede for all of us and send more workers to the vineyard of the
Lord Jesus.
My gratitude to the superiors and to all.
Fr. Estêvão Maurício Atanásio”

TeleMATER Gala Dinner
On June 15, 2017, TeleMATER held its first Gala Dinner in New York. It was
a festive occasion for the Italian American community in New York. Founded by Fr. Walter Tonelotto, TeleMATER is the first Italian Catholic TV in the United States. It is a pastoral activity of the ScalaMEDIA GROUP, a non-profit organization of the Scalabrini Fathers in the United States. The proceeds from the event will assist to support the mission of TeleMATER and its expansion.
“If you have the faith of a mustard seed, you will move mountains!” TeleMATER is the small mustard seed that the Virgin Mary of Pompeii has planted in the City of New York two years ago, and it is ready to move mountains!
The original idea was very simple: To bring the Italian Mass to many Italians in the USA, especially those who could not get to their church or lived too far from an Italian parish. At the same time, a group of young Italian professionals gathered around the church of Pompeii in Manhattan in order to organize a new community based on their catholic faith. They put the two ideas together and started streaming what then later became TeleMATER. A special mass on Saturday night, a special choir (SOL Choir), a few cameras and by November 28, 2014 they were on the Web.
The goal was to provide other programs, which could enhance the faith and the cultural traditions of the Italian people in the USA. A big step came when TELEPACE gave TeleMATER the permission to re-broadcast their programs 24/7 in addition to the Italian Mass. Then, TeleMATER started producing its own shows in New York. One of the TeleMATER videos on Beato Frassati was shown to millions of your people during the prayer vigil on the World Youth Day in Cracow, Poland in 2015.
Another important step came when TeleMATER partnered with ALETEIA, a Catholic News Agency which reaches millions of people in Europe in seven different languages.
In 2015, TeleMATER was included on the programming of the Queens Public Television with more that 700,000 viewers. In 2016, it was accepted by NET TV of the Diocese of Brooklyn that reaches more than 5 million households in the NY metropolitan area. In 2017, it was welcomed by TELECARE of the Diocese of Long Island, which reaches more than 15 million households in the US.
Today, TeleMATER continues improving and promoting through social media, smart TVs and many platforms like ROKU, Samsung. Anyone with Internet access can enjoy free Catholic Italian programming 24/7. Many Italian families, however, don’t know about this possibility, so in the next few years, TeleMATER will work in order to grow and reach out to all the Italian families in the US.
Thankful to the Blessed Mother for her guidance and support, the ScalaMEDIA invites you to join in the enthusiasm and success of TeleMATER.

Ongoing Formation Course for Young Scalabrinian Priests 2017
This year, five priests from our Province will attend the ongoing formation program for young Scalabrinian
priests in Piacenza: Fr. Carlos Alberto Barbosa, Fr. Jean Kesnel Metellus, Fr. Petrus Pitol, Fr. Teófilo Ramirez
Moreno and Fr. Víctor Cordova. They will join young priests from the other Scalabrinian provinces and
regions to strengthen their fraternal bonds as members of the same religious family, and to deepen their

through moments of prayer, conferences, guided visits to the Scalabrinian places, workshops and much
more. The course will take place during the month of October, concluding with the feast of Saint Charles
Borromeo, on November 4, in Rome.
In Memoriam
Our confrere, Fr. Giuseppe Bizzotto passed away on April 11, 2017, at the house “San Raffaele”, in Bassano del Grappa, Italy. Fr. Bizzotto was born on April 18, 1925, in San Zeno di Cassola, Italy. He was
ordained to the priesthood on June 18, 1950. During his 67 years as a Scalabrinian priest, his missionary work included service at St Tarcisius
(Framingham, MA), St. Anthony (Everett, MA), St. Michael (New Haven, CT), St. Anthony (Hamilton, Ontario), St. Paschal Baylon (Thornhill, Ontario) and Our Lady of Pompei (Montreal, Quebec).
We entrust Fr. Giuseppe to the Merciful Lord, whom he served in the
Church and through the migrants, as a faithful servant and a true disciple of Jesus and of Blessed John Baptist Scalabrini.

From the Provincial Archives...
The Scalabrini Sisters have been of immense help to some of the missions in the Saint Charles Province. One of the most notable nuns was Sister Marcolina. From the archives comes this photo of Sister Marcolina at her sewing machine at Saint Charles Seminary in 1958.
Sister Marcolina is also is third from the right in this 1991 picture from the fiftieth anniversary of the sisters' presence in the United States, along with Father Anthony Dal Balcon, Father Isaiah Birollo, Apostolic Delegate Agostino Cacciavillan, Father Carmen Negro and Father Caesar Donanzan
Artists often use light symbolically. Here, two artists incorporate light into the image of the Flight into Egypt in
different ways. In 1525, Wolfgang Huber painted a colorful image of the Holy Family with light pouring down from
above. In 1930 Stanislaus Chrostowski created a print of the Holy Family traveling by night, guided by the lights of
their own halos.
