On my first Sunday with you, all I knew about you was your name Arnolia a name which itself is a compromise, a coming together, of two groups of people who formed the fledgling church in 1910. One group wanted the congregation to take the name Arbutus, and another wanted to be named for the Magnolia. Instead of one group kicking out the other, you both gave up what you prized, so that you could stay together. And you made something new, something special, in the process. I love that your name is Arnolia. I love that it was the first thing I learned about you. But I want to celebrate what I’ve discovered about you in the 8 months since I joined you on July 1 of last year. I’ve learned you love to fill bags with food to give to children who go hungry on the weekends. I’ve learned you love to staff a thrift store, so that there are funds available to share with people in crisis. I’ve learned you love to support one another and visit one another when they are isolated and homebound. I’ve learned you love to see more people grow in faith and become disciples of Jesus Christ. I’ve learned you love to host Vacation Bible School, flea markets, a Halloween trunk-or-treat, and a Breakfast with Santa, so that people in the community know we are here. I’ve learned you love to care for this sacred place with dedication and pride. I’ve learned you are everything that a church can be and should be. That’s why I believe that no matter what happens out there in the world, ministry will continue here just as what Arnolia has been doing for years: Welcoming members from every background, and finding new and worthwhile ways to serve God in the world by feeding the hungry, caring for the isolated, and forming disciples in faith. For that, I give thanks. Im ready to see what happens next. May the transforming grace of Jesus Christ help you to find thanksgiving and courage, too. Always. Rev. James

On my first Sunday with you,

all I knew about you was your name – Arnolia – a name which itself is a compromise, a coming together, of two groups of people who formed the fledgling church in 1910.

That’s why I believe that no matter what happens out there in the world, ministry will continue here just as what Arnolia has been doing for years: Welcoming members from every background, and finding new and worthwhile ways to serve God in the world – by feeding the hungry, caring for the isolated, and forming disciples in faith. For that, I give thanks. I’m ready to see what happens next.

May the transforming grace of Jesus Christ help you to find thanksgiving and courage, too. Always.

Rev. James

Trustees Report Gillian Glorioso, Chair

Hello Arnolia! My name is Gillian Glorioso and I'm proud to be serving as your new chair of the Trustee Committee. What an honor it is to be asked to try and fill some pretty big shoes! Thank you to our outgoing chairperson, Tim Hugus, for all of the work and love you've given to Arnolia through the years!

Welcome and Thank you to Jim Walstrum who is stepping in to cover our Vendor Coordinator position. Jim has already been busy around Arnolia meeting with vendors and working hard to clear the repair list! Jim, you're amazing and we are so blessed to have you!

The health of our church building is good. We have a new process for identifying issues around our building. Anna Nellies, our Administrator, and Susan Joseph, our custodian, will coordinate weekly to discuss cleaning and repair work that is needed. Thank you, ladies, for taking on this task. It's so important to keeping Arnolia healthy and will help us to serve our community better. Thank you to everyone for helping with this task by identifying areas that need attention on the weekly attendance slips! You're a big part of the improvements around our church home.

We have some upcoming building items planned and we could use some volunteers to help them be a success. Will YOU be a part of the change at Arnolia? Please email me at [email protected] or call/text me at 904-294-4159 to volunteer. I promise we won't make it hurt too badly!

Thank you for your time! See you all Sunday! Gillian Glorioso

The Master Plan for Arnolia United Methodist Church Richard Disharoon and Craig Nickerson

On Sunday, February 17th, the message of the day focused on Vision 20/20 and Craig discussed how we’re doing in each of the five areas of the Master Plan, challenging the congregation to confront “The Final Frontier” of the Master Plan.

In the area of Community Outreach, we discussed all we’re doing in our community including Breakfast with Santa, our Flea Markets, Vacation Bible School, and Trunk or Treat. We continue to meet with good success in these areas and look forward to continuing our outreach in the years to come.

In the area of Missions, we discussed our work at Manna House, our contributions to the Assistance Center of Towson Churches, the Board of Child Care, and our Outreach Ministry. We are touching the lives of hundreds of people in our community and our world. We could use more volunteers to help, especially with Manna House.

In the area of Member Care, we discussed how the team provides transportation for members to doctor’s appointments, the grocery store, and church services. For example, two members were delighted to have transportation to the 7:30 concert and service on Christmas Eve. Carole Disharoon is always happy to add volunteers to this effort so please step up and help!

In the area of Worship, we have seen some big accomplishments. Craig showed everyone the iPad he was carrying since it is the driving force behind our new audio system in the sanctuary, and it kept us from having to construct a booth in the back of the sanctuary. There are plans to create handicapped seating spaces in the sanctuary. We have installed a new hearing-impaired sound system for the sanctuary, and we have external funding to provide paid nursery workers for Sunday mornings.

The Worship Committee will be further engaging the congregation to understand our hopes and dreams for worship.

In the area of Physical Plant, we recognized the incredibly dedicated team of Trustees we have at Arnolia and acknowledged all they have done to ensure our Physical Plant is ready to support our work, and we discussed all the great things we’ve done recently to make minor improvements. Our next significant challenge is planning for our long-term priorities – rest rooms near the sanctuary, improved HVAC for the basement under the sanctuary, and handicap access for the basement – all of which will require a capital campaign to complete. Craig encouraged everyone to stop thinking like we have in years past and take a risk to improve our physical plant. We need to determine an affordable list of critical improvements and move forward with a capital campaign to make our physical plant ready to be the springboard it needs to be to enable us in our work in the community.

The message concluded with a reminder from the Apostle Paul in the third chapter of the letter to the Philippians for how to live in turbulent times:

But this one thing I do:

forgetting what lies behind and

straining forward to what lies ahead,

I press on toward the goal

for the prize of the heavenly call

of God in Christ Jesus.

God is definitely sowing seeds among us today. What kind of soil will you be?

Spring Flea Market Saturday, May 11, 2019, rain date, May 18, 2019

Arnolia’s 2019 Spring Flea Market will be held on Saturday, May 11th from 9am to 2pm. Volunteering for the flea market is a fun way to spend time with your fellow church members and with members of the community! Donations are needed for our white elephant tables: glassware, kitchen ware, decorative objects, electronics in working order, books, toys, craft items, tools and any other items you think would sell! Donations may be dropped off in the Missions Room.

Are you a flea market enthusiast? Volunteers are needed to sort and price the items which have been donated. We will need bakers to contribute baked goods for sale on the day of the Flea Market.

On the day of the Flea Market, volunteers are needed to handle sales of the flea market items, of the food and bake table items. Let us know if you are interested in participating by calling or emailing Drennan Nickerson at 410-561-5310 or at [email protected]. A signup sheet will be posted on the bulletin board outside the sanctuary soon!

Family Life Report Joe Anna Funk, Chair

Thanks to all who added socks to the Christmas tree in the Narthex. Socks and underwear are always in demand. Your donations helped to give those in need clean socks to wear. As always, your donations of street worthy clothing: jeans, sweatshirts, flannel shirts, jackets, socks and underwear (for men and women) are always needed.

Thanks also to those who donated new dish towels to the kitchen. We now have a supply that will make you happy to dry dishes.

Just to let you know that when we have our next pot luck luncheon, date TBD, we will be having a crazy, mixed up paper goods day. We have quite a few plates, cups and napkins from prior events, including parties that have been held, so we will be clearing out the cabinets. You may be eating on Christmas,

Thanksgiving, Patriotic, or Happy Birthday plates, and drinking from many colored cups.

Again, thanks to all the volunteers on Family Life; if you’re interested in joining us, please let me know.

Outreach Ministry Report Joe Anna Funk, Chair

We continue to see clients who are in need of assistance with Eviction, BGE turnoff notices, and help with food.

Priscilla Calvert has reached out to businesses in our community and this has resulted in our receiving donations for breakfasts for Manna House, as well as donations to Arnolia. We received donations from Jerry’s Toyota of canned goods, as well as clothing and toys. They do a drive in the fall, and contribute to several worthy organizations; we are fortunate to be a recipient.

We also received a large donation from the Johnson Funeral Home Foundation to be used for our Outreach Mission.

We are doing well in canned foods, but can use pasta, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter and jelly and cereal. If you pick up something while shopping, please leave outside the Outreach Office door, across from Pastor James’ Office.

Many of our families receive food stamps, but some of the amounts are so small; they need help from food pantries. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my years at Arnolia, is that we are a generous congregation. Thank you for all your help with our Outreach Mission.

Please continue to keep Priscilla and Ed in prayer, she is truly missed.

Arnolia’s Thrift Store Update from Carole Disharoon and Thrift Store Volunteers

New thrift store donation memo Our new procedures for donation drop-offs are as follows – because of the store's limited display space and our need to start clearing out seasonal items, we will continue to accept household items, Spring - Summer women and men and children's clothing, accessories, toys, jewelry, children's books, etc. But we are no longer accepting adult books such as novels, cook books, magazines nor greeting cards.

There will be a new procedure for actually dropping off items, also. We are asking that you first call the church office, at 410-665-7005 and speak with Anna, our church's administrative assistant. She will ask you a few questions about the types of articles you are planning on donating to our thrift store and take your contact info. She then will notify myself and I will call you to establish a drop-off time for the donor to meet with one of our store volunteers to accept your donations. In this manner, we who manage the store can place your items in a safe place until we display them. Otherwise, random drop-offs cause less space in an already crowded room. Working together we can continue to provide support to those in need!!!!!!!

Please continue prayers for our beloved Priscilla Calvert, her husband Ed, and their families.

Board of Child Care March Missions Project Paula Pfeifer

We will be collecting candy for Easter baskets at the Board of Child Care. This year about 300 baskets will be filled for the youth at all of the Board of Child Care facilities.

Here is a list of the items that they need this year:

• Chocolate eggs (individually wrapped) – these are small enough to fill empty plastic eggs

• Other candy that is individually wrapped

• Individual snack size bags of chips, pretzels, Cheetos, etc.

• Granola bars • Fruit cups – in plastic containers only

They do not need any plastic eggs, grass or baskets. They have enough of these items already.

The BOCC Auxiliary will be assembling the baskets at the Baltimore Campus (in the Chapel) on Friday, April 12 beginning at 11:00 a.m. I helped with this last year and I plan to help assemble the baskets again this year. If you would like to take part in this activity, please let me know.

Missions Committee Report Missions Projects for March and April

March Mission Baltimore Helping Up Mission Providing the means to overcome drugs, homelessness, give hope and restore families. Helping to win the race called Life.

April Mission Vacation Bible School: When Mr. Dick Chenoweth passed away, his wish was that all VBS children would not have to pay to go. It has been passed by our council that Arnolia would meet this request. With God’s help and our congregation, this is certainly feasible.

Volunteer with Manna House We would love to have some others from Arnolia join us at Manna House We have a group of 4 that go every Monday, occasionally 5 or 6, leaving the lot between 7:50 and 8:00. If you'd like to see what goes on there, please let me know. We work hard sorting and filling the orders, have fun and sometimes are naughty! You really need to see some of the donations that come in. Again, thank you for all you do to enable us to continue this outreach mission at Arnolia.

The Backpack Buddies Team Marlis Collins, Christie Grape & Ralph Wilson

A thank you from Oakleigh Elementary School:

Arnolia Church Community, Thank you so much for supporting our Oakleigh families this holiday season. Our families were overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity. It truly made their holiday special. We are so fortunate to have you in our community!

The School Counseling Team @ Oakleigh ES For each month of the school year the teachers and students focus on a virtue, a “hands on” experience where the students learn what it means to have respect, compassion, responsibility and generosity for themselves and others.

The virtue for March is “Honesty” and in April they will concentrate on “Persistence”. Why not include these students and their teachers in your daily prayers as they strive to learn the virtues of being honest and to persistent in school and at home during March and April.

Finally, as always, Christie, Ralph and I thank you for your generous monetary gifts to the back pack program as well as the gifts of back pack food that greet us every week in the missions room. Remember whether you bring in a carton of Chef Boyardee, shelf milk or one Compleats meal, it is always appreciated.

The Backpack Buddies grocery list gives you an idea of the food items we use to pack our bags. All items are single serving and when needed, microwaveable. Although we do not use items with artificial sweeteners, we do try to keep sugar content to a minimum.

Arnolia’s Backpack Shopping List Single Servings – Microwaveable – Shelf Safe Hormel Compleats (No Snackers) Barilla Meals Chef Boyardee Cups Mac n Cheese Cups Individual low-sugar cereal box or instant oatmeal Breakfast Bars * Pudding Cups Fruit or Veggie Cups Tuna/Chicken Salad & crackers kit Single Shelf Milk Microwave Popcorn Cheese Cracker Sandwiches * Raisins – Individual Packs Hot Cocoa Mix Snack Bags – Chips, Pretzels * * No nut products, please.

Member Care Report Carole Disharoon, Chair Providing Assistance to Our Precious Members in Need of Support

O! There is a precious, uplifting hymn in our Hymnbooks entitled Help Us Accept Each Other, hymn # 560.There are 4 verses - today I am sharing verse 4 - as it totally sums up the purpose for which the Member Care Committee was established a few years ago. "Lord, for today's encounters with all who are in need, who hunger for acceptance, for righteousness and bread, we need new eyes for seeing, new hands for holding on; renew us with your spirit; Lord, free us, make us one."

All of us here at Arnolia have been in need – of loving understanding when life sours, more hearts and hands to help out when we are ill or in sorrow or lack physical strength to carry on tasks, or to have a special friend to listen to what is burdening our minds and hearts, to unravel the threads of life which knot our souls. We need a Christlike presence for a spell – to share scripture or sing or to just hold our hands in prayer. We, as a group of volunteers, can help out not only with occasional fixers of emergency situations such as transportation, help with pets in emergencies, minor home repairs, grocery shopping, pick up medicines, but some of us can also visit with you or have phone conversations. If you are homebound and wish communion that will happen also!

Check out the booklets on hallway table near Sanctuary and take one home for references as to some people who have volunteered to provide rides to and from church or to help with emergency transportation. You may call whomever is on list and if he or she is not available on the date that you need this service please call someone else on list.

If you wish to talk to Pastor James about more personal issues or arrange at home communion please call 410-665-7005 or Email him at [email protected].

The members of this committee have worked diligently to provide what has been asked of us, in Jesus's name. With joy we have been busy! But this is our field of giving back to others, that which God has provided us with, over our lifetimes!!!!! I wish to personally thank Beth Krebs, Carole Rathmell, Ralph Wilson, Dick Disharoon, and Nancy Wolfe, who work with me to share our resources for the sake of our brethren here at Arnolia. And although Jerry Finley is not listed as a committee member – he always has been and continues to be the original care giver here at our faith home!

If anyone else in our congregation wishes to volunteer to help out with occasional emergency help for others in our church, please phone me at 410-661-6778. Also, our hearts and ears are open if you have a fresh idea on how we can care for members of Arnolia.

Thank You

Thank you for your prayers and condolences on the passing of my mother. My family is immensely grateful for your kind prayers and sympathy.

God Bless, Mary Rettman
