Grenache raises over £3,000for Cancer ResearchRay Flynn, a very good friend of ours here at Grenache Restaurant, was recently diagnosed with stomach and liver cancer. Hisdaughter, Helene, ran in July’s Race For Life to raise funds forCancer Research and to support Helene we held a CharityEvening on 7th June.
We had 2 weeks to beg, steal (well, not quite!) or borrow everything we needed to run a successful event. Our thanks toour suppliers: Pendrills, Morgenrot, Bookers, Grundy’s Fish,Grundy’s Fruit & Veg and Bates Fruit & Veg who all sponsored thefood courses; to our friends who gave us prizes and finally to allour staff who donated their time and made the night a huge success.
On the evening, every seat was filled and guests were treated to a champagne reception, 4 coursesof food and entertainment from our host and owner Huss Abbas! We also held a secret auctionwhere our chef was “bought” for £500 to cook for the lucky winner, plus a free MOT & service raised£70 and a signed Man City shirt another £170. Even a date with Huss was auctioned off for £150!
Raffle prizes included a bottle of whisky signed by Tony Blair, a voucher for holistic treatments, abouquet of fresh flowers, £50 cash, £40 in lottery tickets, £50 from Shuffs Fashion, meals in Isis,The Basin and Sugos, and a signed Bolton Wanderers shirt.
In total we raised just over £3,000. A full list of prize winners is now displayed on our notice board.

Rise in car accidentclaims during holiday season
It may be hard to believe that most trafficaccidents occur during the warmer summermonths. Whilst winter weather may bring awide variety of challenging road conditions, from ice and snow, research shows that it isexactly drivers’ decreased attention to roadsafety during summer that contributes tothe increased number of incidents.
It’s estimated that around seven million people make car journeysfor UK holidays during bankholidays and the summermonths. This high number of motorists, combined withcars crammed full of peopleand luggage, means roadtraffic accidents are morelikely.
Summer is also the time forsurface dressing as highwaysauthorities improve localroads by laying tar coveredwith loose chippings. Butwhile the work is necessary,it is the curse of motorists, causing damage to paint-work and headlamp glasses.
Rick of ChipsAway in Worsley said: “If you are unfortunate enough to haveyour car paintwork damagedby loose chippings or have abump or scrape whilst travelling this summer – itdoes not necessarily meanyou have the hassle and expense of claiming on yourinsurance to get it repaired.
ChipsAway is the UK’s leading brand inminor automotive paintwork repairs, fixingdamage such as scratches, bumper scuffsand kerbed alloys within a matter of hoursand at a fraction of the cost of traditionalbody shop repair methods.”

Plans unveiledfor new Moorside High School
Artists impression of school from Dean's Road
The staff, parents, pupils and governors ofMoorside High School are delighted at therecent news that the school is going to have a rebuild.
A £25m campus style school will be developedon the playing fields opposite the presentbuildings. The campus will incorporate Moorside Primary and Moorside High School. This building accommodating ages 3-16 willbe the only such facility in Salford. In fact thisstyle of ‘all through’ school is almost uniquewithin the country and will be a focus for education specialists across the UK.
The state of the art facilities were originallydestined as an amalgamated 1,350 pupil highschool for The Swinton and Moorside HighSchools. Following The Swinton’s applicationto become an Academy, the Council madethe following decisions:-
To stop the closure process on Swintonand Moorside High Schools.
To refuse the application from the Salford Learning Trust to develop a joint high school for 1,350 pupils
To develop a new Moorside High School for 1,050 pupils on a site with Moorside Primary which will cater for 630 pupils.
The news that Moorside High School was tobe rebuilt and remain open has been greetedwith excitement and relief that the “BuildingSchools for the Future” programme has beensaved. There was a concern that in grantingleave for Swinton to become an Academy theBSF programme may be halted and the money would not be allocated to Salford.
The Local Authority have worked hard to secure the funding and have backed MoorsideHigh School for a new build. This is excellentnews for the school and the communities ofWorsley and Swinton. Mr Ogden, Headteacherof Moorside High School said:-"This is what the staff and pupils of Moorside HighSchool have been waiting for, world class buildingsto match the outstanding teaching and learningthat already takes place. It is going to be an excitingtime for everyone involved with the school."
By the end of the summer term, parents andpotential parents will have had the opportunityto see the plans and meet with the LeadershipTeam. Updated plans and drawings will beposted on the school website. If you wouldlike to see further details as they happen thenvisit www.moorsidehigh.co.uk.
The New Moorside High is set to open inSeptember 2013.

With 50 acres of landscapes gardens, a 1,000 acreDeer Park, there is plenty of space to roam, runwild and release some energy! A particularfavourite is the Adventure Playground with over30 “rides” from treehouses to zip wires. If that’snot enough, visit the working farm, ride on thetractor and the small funfair rides. There are a fewsnack and ice cream vendors, plus a cafe but thatgets very busy. It’s best to take a picnic and avoidthe painful queuing for food. Take some outdoortoys and the kids can entertain themselves!Tel: 01625 374 400 | www.tattonpark.org.ukAshley Road, Knutsford, Cheshire WA16 6QN
Tried and TestedA couple of personal recommendations - some great places which have entertained my 2 boys well!
MOSI, MANCHESTERThe Museum of Science and Industry is fun and educational. Even from as young as 4 yrs old, it’s agreat day out. Visit the Power Hall and experience the working engines. There are interactive exhibitsdotted about, craft activities/experiments to try, pluscomical plays being performed to engage the kids.
By far, the favourite gallery is “Experiment!”, whereyou can try out interactive experiments. It occupiesthem for ages and is a great learning experience. On top of that there are story-telling sessions, a4D cinema, steam train rides and more displayswith interactive exhibits. Most of it is free, and thecafe serves pretty nice food as well!

The SalonOwner Stacey Brogan, at a youthful 26 yearsof age, has created a chic and successfulhair & beauty salon.
Elysium opened in December 2010 onWorsley Road. Stacey’s mission was to createa high class, top quality, professional andfriendly salon, offering a “one-stop shop”with treatments from top to toe.Hair services include:- Hair cutting & styling, extensions, colouring and straightening. Body treatments:- St Tropez tans, make-up,facials, massage and Bio Sculpture gels.
Elysium is made up of a happy team ofeight highly trained and experienced stylistsand therapists. Business is going really wellwith a healthy mix of existing clients whomoved with the staff to Elysium, new clientsand passing trade (thanks to their great location just off the East Lancs).
The salon has a French Baroque style with amodern twist. Downstairs is a beautiful, spacious hair salon, whilst upstairs there arethree beauty treatment rooms. All are decorated and equipped to high standardsand with some unique pieces of furniture.
We visited Elysium to try a few treatments:-
St tropez spray tanLouise had two applications of spray tanand was given aftercare advice after hertreatment. The tan dried in a just few minutes. When Louise washed it off the next day, shewas left with an even colour with a realgolden glow - perfect for her skin type!
Hair Cut & StyleLouise had an initial consultation and was offered some “Look Books” which had somegreat styles for differing lengths of hair.Louise chose one and asked to keep herlength but add texture and body to her hair. With volumising shampoo and conditioner,
BEFORE AFTER
Eyelash ExtensionsLouise opted for thicker lashes, the otheroption being longer. The express treatmentwas very relaxing and took about 45 mins. After the first layer, Louise opted for anotherlayer and was really pleased with the results:-“My lashes look very full and glamorous!”The therapist gave her aftercare advice andencouraged to call if I she had any problems. The lashes last 2-3 weeks.
Hot Stone MassageMy Hot Stone back, neck and shouldersmassage was very comforting. My therapistwas very confident and applied a good firmpressure ( just what I needed!). I definitelyfelt a much deeper effect with the hot stones. It’s a great warming and relaxing treatment -one which I hear is not easy to get right.
Bio Sculpture Gel NailsA quick and easy nail treatment thatstrengthens and promotes the growth ofnatural nails. It dries in 2 mins under a UVAlight, so no fear or smudging! I had a Frenchmanicure finish with a touch of sparkle. Thefinished effect was great, really glossy andstill perfect a week on and has withstoodmany a trampling by my 2 boys! A greatsummer look and should last a few weeks.

a great cut and blow-dry, some volumisingmousse, the stylist achieved exactly whatLouise was looking for - lots of movement -and Louise was thrilled with the result.

Hypnosis...the most effectiveway to Stop SmokingAdele from MindMasters Hypnotherapy explains why it
is SO tough, and the best technique to help you QUIT!
It is well known that the majority of smokersdream of giving up the wicked weed but struggle, some their entire life. With them heading outto buy the endless nicotine replacement productsor opting for the good old fashioned coldturkey is it any wonder why so many people fail?
The AddictionNicotine replacement products wean you offthe nicotine until you can go it alone. However, nicotine leaves the body approx 72 hours afterextinguishing your last cigarette, so if it’s onlyabout nicotine addiction shouldn’t you besmoke free after 3 days of cold turkey? WRONG!Every smoker knows this is not the case.
Smoking is a mental addiction (or habit), NOTa physical one. The habit lies in the subconsciousmind, so no matter how much you say
consciously that you want to quit, you arefighting a difficult battle because it is tuckedaway deep in your subconscious. This is whyhypnotherapy is extremely powerful as it dealswith the subconscious.
90% success rate & no weight gain!I have helped hundreds of people quit over thelast 8 years. Each one of them amazed at howeasy it was, and as an added bonus with thespecial advanced technique I use, you don’tgain any weight afterwards!
So, if you are one of the millions who wish youcould quit for good then try a different approachand free yourself from the nicotine trap! For more information, contact Adele at:-MINDMASTERS HYPNOTHERAPY: 0161 793 5990or visit www.mindmasters.co.uk

Don’t stunt the growthof your childby Jonathan Gaul, Swinton Physiotherapy
Summertime brings great opportunity for kidsto get outdoors and get active, and normallyan increase in the amount of bumps andscrapes. While this is a normal part of growingup and we expect children to heal quickly, it isimportant to pick up early on anything thatmay cause problems in later life.
In childhood the bones are soft and the supporting soft tissue ie. tendon and ligamentsare stronger, which means damage normallyoccurs in a bone before the surrounding softtissue when subject to force. Bear this in mindif your GP ever describes a child’s wrist or ankleinjury as a ‘ligament sprain’.
Particular caution is required when there ispossibility of fracture near the end of a bonewhere growth occurs. If the fracture is not
detected early and aligned properly there isthe risk of difference in limb length or bonyangulation.
As children enter their teens and becomeheavily involved in sport they face similar risksbut in a less obvious form. With repeated useand loading there is the chance of an overuseinjury, which is much more serious than inadults as it can affect the growth sites. Mainsites of risk are the heel, front of the knee, andthe front of the hip/pelvis.
With rest from the aggravating activity, symptoms normally settle and sports can beresumed. Pay attention to any repeated complaints from your child, and seek early assessment from a physiotherapist.
Dancers, Gymnasts, Firemen, Astronauts...Most households will have one in some size or shape.Don't let pain or injury prevent your child from living out their dream.

Food tips to help yourchild succeed at schoolby Karen Pheasant, owner of Ladies Workout Express
With children heading off to school this month, how can you give themthe best possible nutritional basis fromwhich to have a happyand productive time?
The key is a well-balanced, healthy diet fullof wholefoods, lean protein, good fats andlots of fruit and veg. Wholefoods providechildren with the energy they need to playand learn. Protein is important for growthand good brain function. Oily fish containsessential fatty acids that are key to helpingcognitive function and avoiding dyslexia. B vitamins, found in a wide range of foods including cereals, potatoes and proteins arealso critical for effective brain function.
On the other hand, processed carbohydratesand sugar have bad effects on a child’s attention span, focusing ability and activitylevels. They can cause hyperactivity, followedby tiredness, irritability and poor concentration.
Make breakfast thestart to the dayResearch shows that children who eat breakfasthave better test scores,
behave better and exhibit less hyperactivity than those
who don’t. The effect is best where children have low GI breakfasts, as these
are more satisfying and reduce the likelihoodof energy lows and tiredness in the mid-morning.
A good low GI breakfast could combinewholemeal toast, eggs, tomatoes, peanutbutter, fruit and milk. Wholemilk is a
valuable source of calcium, which along withthe Vitamin D found in eggs, will help tobuild strong bones. Citrus fruits and berriesprovide vitamin C, for a strong immune system to help ward off the inevitablecoughs and colds. Be careful when choosing breakfast cereals: most commercial cerealsare high GI. Look instead for those that arebased on oats, bran or barley.
Snacking can be goodIf your child’s energy still dips in the morning, then provide a healthy snack – an apple, wholegrain crackers, nuts, or cheese snacks, instead of chocolate or crisps.
School lunch orpacked lunch?Teach your child how to make healthier choicesand to avoid fast food, greasy pizzas and chips that will cause an energy surge and slump later. Alternatively, preparea packed lunch; hearty soups, wholemealsandwiches with chicken, tuna or egg, fruitand yoghurt are all great choices. Involveyour child in choosing the lunch box and itscontents, and this, along with their desire toeat up quickly to get out and play, will helpensure it gets eaten.
After school snacksA light after-school snack is a great way to refuel your child's bodybefore play or studytime. A handful of nutsand an apple is perfect,or maybe a snack trayof vegetables and dips.

Proposed World Heritage SiteWorsley has many interesting relics of thepast, but few compare with The Delph - aplace so remarkable it has been proposed asa candidate for status as a World HeritageSite (a classification that includes the Pyramids and the Great Wall of China!)
What on earth could this nondescript smallbay of a canal, reaching into a quarry, possiblyhave in common with those famous feats ofarchitecture and civil engineering? Certainlynot size or majesty; no palace or castle, nofossils of ancient creatures. The Delph canshow none of these things, for its astonishingachievement and its unique contribution totechnology lie deep underground - anamazing 52 miles of navigable canals.
The Birth of the Bridgewater CanalBack in the middle of the 18th century thebooming towns of south Lancashire werecreating the Industrial Revolution and neededcheap fuel to power a host of industries.Worsley had that fuel in abundance - coal -under the Duke of Bridgewater’s estates, and he was determined to provide it, in thefirst instance, to Manchester. The problemwas transportation, which at that time washorse and cart on primitive roads. However, the Duke was not only imaginative, he wasinspired in his choice of men to get jobs done.
The solution, agreed with the Duke’s AgentJohn Gilbert, was to build the first “true”canal in Britain, which carries the Duke’sname to this day.
Started in 1759, the great engineer JamesBrindley was employed to build the Canalfor his patron and Manchester was reachedin 1765.
Worsley Delph:Gateway to theUnderworld
Going UndergroundIt had been realised from the outset thattransport bottlenecks would still exist at thesource of the coal, despite the Canal. Thecoal pits were scattered all over the Bridgewater Estate, along a northwardtrending “spine”, with lateral outriders, ending near Bolton and were all underground.
Enter the resourceful Gilbert, with anotheraudacious plan - why not take the Canal itself to the coalfaces? Consider, this was250 years ago and Gilbert was proposingnothing less than tunneling to connectmultiple mines in an underground chain. Not only that, he intended the system woulddeliver a threefold benefit:- drainage for allthe mines; ventilation and a complete transportation system of canals to the outsideworld for the coal they produced. It wouldbe done with picks, shovels, perhaps a littlegunpowder and candlepower. The peoplewho would do it were men, women and children as young as 5 years old.
You can see where they commenced thismonumental task. The Delph, the ancientquarry (“place of delving”) was carved fromthe sandstone hillside over 1,000 years ago.It supplied the stone for the church of St. Mary the Virgin in Eccles, founded in1111. Now, 750 years later, it was to bedelved again to serve the Duke’s purpose. The stone has the interesting characteristicthat it hardens when it weathers but beyondthe weathered surface it is easy to work. Thus it yielded easily to the tunnelers.
Two parallel tunnels were dug about 50yards apart, which you can still see from theroad bridge. After 500 yards undergroundthe two converge into the single navigable

channel that forms the “spine” of the entiresystem. Initially the miners aimed for pitsthat were in the locality of what is now theEast Lancs Road, but their first major targetwas the “Ellesmere” pit at Walkden. Whereverthey went they encountered water - lots of it,particularly when they reached the mines. Asthey proceeded, they discovered coal seams, exploited them and a lateral tunnel canalwould be dug to service them. So the“branches” grew, connecting outlying pits inwhat was to eventually resemble a tree system. As the land rose, from Walkden towardsFarnworth, a means had to be found tomaintain the canal concept and yet againGilbert had the answer.
Further Technological InnovationsGilbert conceived the idea of dry slopes, that would link canals whenever a major uplift in elevation was required. Above andbelow the slopes would be level canals andboats would proceed to the head and footof such slopes. Using a system of blocks andpulleys the weight of a descending loadedboat would provide the power to haul anempty boat up to the next level.
Another Gilbert innovation was the installationof sluices. These would be closed, to damwater, and then released in sequence, creating a travelling wave that would helppropel loaded boats towards the exit.
Yet another inspiration was probably thefirst known application of “containerisation”,with coal being loaded into boxes withinboats and then transhipped by crane intothe waiting narrow boats in the Delph.
The Human AchievementThese ingenious ideas and new technologies
tend to overshadow the “blood, sweat andtears” of the human achievement that theseunderworld canals represent. Every inch oftheir 52 miles was hand-hewn from the rock, huge chambers were created, and most ofthe propulsion power for the “Starvationner”boats (so-called due to their exposed ribs)that travelled the depths was provided byhuman hands, knees and feet. Lying flat ontheir backs, with faces only inches from thetunnel roof, men women and children woulduse their limbs to push the boats along withonly a candle for comfort and the constantfear of gas explosion or cave-in.
The End of an EraThese distribution methods continued until1889, when an overland tram network wasestablished to the productive southern pitsof the coalfield. These later gave way totrains which shunted wagons loaded withcoal to two chutes on the canal - one atBoothstown Basin, one at Worsley, whichdischarged into barges heading for BartonPower Station.
However, it was not the end of the active lifeof the underground canals. They still had arole in drainage and ventilation of activemines and were regularly inspected by theNational Coal Board (using a “Starvationner”boat in the traditional way to avoid cave-ins)well into the 1960’s. Their present conditioncan only be guessed at, but judging by theconstant water flow from the tunnel entrancesat the Delph, they are still fulfilling one oftheir purposes.
