Drop in for tea at BeesleyGreen Community CentreA popular Community CentreBeesley Green Community Centre is run bySalford Community Leisure. With over 8,000users in April-June 2010, the centre hassomething to offer everyone. Classes andgroups of all types and for all ages takeplace 7 days a week, plus with rooms forhire there are 2-3 parties every weekend.

Gordon Warnock, one of the centre managers, has worked here for 19 months. Since joining,he has made great efforts to open up thecommunity centre for residents to usesocially, and not just for classes or voting.

Come and have tea!The idea grew from one man and his dogwho stopped by for some water for his dog,and also ended up having tea and a chat.

Thanks to Gordon’s enthusiasm and gainingSCL approval, you can now drop in, makeyourself a drink and chat with friends. Tea,coffee, soft drinks are available and comingup to winter, hot chocolate and soup too!You just need to make a small contributiontowards the cost. It is proving popular with“customers” from 13 to 87 years old. A self-funded initiative unique to Beesley Green!

Any surplus is spent on biscuits and cakes -another good reason to stop by!

Summer 2011The centre’s goal for next summer is to havean outside seating area for community use.Again this will be self-funded, so if you havesturdy garden furniture you could donate, please call Gordon at Beesley Green.

The centre is also aiming to create one big community event, “ROE GREEN DAY”, incorporating the Cricket, Tennis andBowling clubs, Friends of Roe Green, RoeGreen Church and the Salford Rangers.

Key 103 Cash for Kids Collection PointLeading up to Christmas Beesley Green CCis kindly supporting On Our Doorstep’scharity collection for the Cash for Kids ToyAppeal. The community centre will act as acollection point for local donations. Leavean unwrapped new toy with Gordon or Dale.

Lancashire Day27th November 2010Towns across the county will be celebrating, but what is ‘Lancashire Day”?

Friends of Roe Green are celebrating with a“Lancashire Evening” on Friday 26thNovember at Roe Green Cricket Club. If youare anything like me and lacking in knowledge about local history, you may beenlightened to find out what it actually is!

LANCASHIRE DAYHeld annually, on 27th November,“Lancashire Day” commemorates the day in1295 when Lancashire sent its first representatives to Parliament by KingEdward I of England, to attend what laterbecame known as "The Model Parliament".

The occasion was first observed in 1996,being curated by the “Friends of RealLancashire” group, with many townsthroughout the county hosting events. Themost common annual events are the readingof the “Lancashire Day Proclamation” and aloyal toast to the Queen, who holds the title“Duke of Lancaster”.

Lancashire Day is an opportunity for residents, of the historic county, to declaretheir pride in their heritage. BoltonMetropolitan Borough Council has resolvedto support the day every year. Town criersacross the county will read out theLancashire Day Proclamation.

MANCHESTER OR LANCASHIRE?Worsley is still part of Lancashire - althoughthere is confusion as to whether it is inLancashire or Manchester.

The Friends of Real Lancashire are keen topromote the true identity of our countywhich has been extremely confused by thelocal government reorganisation in 1974.

The Government at that time stated that the"New Counties" were administrative areasonly, and that the boundaries of traditionalcounties such as Lancashire had not beenchanged. Unfortunately, the Media refer tothese administrative areas all too frequentlyand ignore the fact that places such asBarrow-in-Furness, Liverpool, Manchester,Warrington, etc. are still in Lancashire.

MARK THE DAY AT HOME!To mark the day, you could go to Boltonand join in the festivities, or you could joinFriends of Roe Green on their “Lancashire

Evening”. Closer tohome, why not commemorate the dayby cooking a traditionalLancashire Hot Pot!

New Local Doggy VentureMy name is TrevorCrookell and I havejust started up"Barking Mad" in theWorsley, Roe Green,Ellenbrook andBoothstown areas.

After running my own business for 16 years, supplying Home Textiles from China to UKRetailers, I decided it was time for a changeand looked for something totally different.I found it at Barking Mad!

When a dog owner is planning a trip weoffer the "Home from Home" alternative tokennels by placing them with one of ourcarefully selected host families where the dogcan maintain its existing routines. We collectthe dog and its belongings, and take it tothe host family for its own "doggy holiday".

Many hosts are retired people who’ve hadtheir own dogs in the past, and enjoy thecompany of a dog as and when it suits them.

The whole concept works really well andmany customers come back to Barking Mad,showing how much confidence they have inthe service we provide.

Our key aims are to offer a caring, highquality and professional service to ensuremuch-loved pets are looked after to theowners high standards .

We are now keen to find new hosts in thearea and would welcome your enquiry:-T: 01942 818833 or 07990 522622E: [email protected]

Gone are the days of the ‘orange’ jibes thatplagued the industry, as Sienna X spray tanning now gives a gorgeous, natural looking tan without the inherent dangers ofskin damage that can result from overexposure to UVA/B rays, letting you lookstunningly tanned all year round.

It’s quick (only takes 10 minutes), safe andmoisturises as well as giving you a healthylooking skin-tone.

Recommended by Louise from OOD:-I have fair skin but opted for a medium tanto last over my birthday weekend. The resultswere great. After a light shower the nextmorning, I am glowing with a golden streak-free tan. I’m thrilled & can’t wait to show it off!

It’s all performed in a luxurious purpose builtroom. Lisa ensures you get a truly even tan.Cream is applied to eyebrows, hands andfeet to prevent it sticking too much there. After a spray and dry, any uneven areas aretouched up. Sienna X is left on for at least6hrs. You are given a moisturiser to apply, and after a shower at home you can see thefab results.

If you walk along Leigh Road and, takingadvantage of the height, look southward, then you are looking at Chat Moss. Thisbroad swathe of countryside stretches fromthe fringes of Warrington, eastward to theEccles and Worsley boundaries and isbounded on the north by the BridgewaterCanal, on the south by the Manchester ShipCanal. It extends for thousands of acres ofprime agricultural land.

In the urban sprawl that is South Lancashiresuch a landscape seems incongruous. Whyhas it not suffered the same fate as allaround? It is girdled by small and largetowns, old cotton towns, mining towns, ribbon development and waste that haveswamped a once beautiful area. It seemsripe for exploitation.

What saved the Moss and has preserved itsince the last Ice Age (c.10,000 years ago), isthe fact it was a bog. Not just a postagestamp of a bog, but a mighty morass of aplace where a fall into its many black poolswould be terminal. Little grew but cottongrass and the peat was up to 10 metresdeep. Not until 200 years ago was anyattempt made to drain the Moss - a processwhich continues to this day.

To build his railwayfrom Manchester toLiverpool, GeorgeStephenson had to fella forest to provide araft on which to “float”

Chat Moss:a wildlife haven “on our doorstep”

the rail tracks across the Moss, for it swallowed all previous efforts.

What was bad news for builders proved thesalvation of wildlife in this region, for theMoss became a sanctuary for creatures fleeing the towns, which sprouted likemushrooms amid the smoke and squalor ofthe Industrial Revolution. Here they weresafe, for successive landowners of the Moss- from the Duke of Bridgewater down to thepresent day - have forbidden public accessto the land.

So creatures that you would hardly expectto exist (given the popular imagery of“Salford”) within the bounds of a major cityare prospering. This is no zoo, but a wildplace where deer, foxes, badgers, hares, rabbits, weasels and stoats all compete forfood and homes. Where now rare animalssuch as field and water voles are plentifuland all three species of newt (including thenow very rare Great Crested Newt), arepresent.

But the real glory of Chat Moss is in itsbirdlife, in quantity, variety and rarity. There are just over 300 species of bird inthe British Isles and Chat Moss is known tocontain 87 different species in its microcosm. This astonishing number far exceeds anything you are ever likely to see in yourgarden, except for one fortunate homeownerin Boothstown, on the fringe of the Moss. She has witnessed the regular appearanceof at least 40 species!

Of the total, some 15 species are on thenational “Red List”, indicating severelyendangered status and a further 28 speciesare on the “Amber List”, those considered tomerit conservation concern.

These are not just “little brown jobs”, butsome of the most magnificent birds to befound anywhere. If you are a lover of birdsof prey then there are Buzzards, PeregrineFalcons, Kestrels, Hobbys, Sparrowhawksand even an escaped American Harris Hawkwho has taken up residence. Then the owls;Barn Owls, Little Owls, Tawny Owls. There isalso no lack of colour, with Bullfinches ,Lesser Spotted and Green Woodpeckers (inMiddlewood), Greenfinches, Chaffinches andthose gems the Goldfinches to delight theeye. Where, in urban surroundings we arefortunate to have the song of the Blackbirdor Thrush, on the Moss there is an entireorchestra ! Many members of the thrushfamily, the Mistle, Song, Redwing, Fieldfareare all present but even they give way tothe glorious paean of the Skylark, abundantall over the Moss, as it soars ever higher.

For those contemplating a garden fishpondhowever, a word of warning. Chat Moss ishome to over 7% of the total breeding population, in Great Britain, of Grey Herons. These majestic birds, each with a wingspanof over 2 metres, and a beak like a lance, choose Botany Bay Wood (the largest forestin Greater Manchester) on the Moss, tomake their nests. Each February they come

from all parts of the North and congregatein the pine tree tops of the Wood to buildtheir great nests. More than a hundred suchnests fill the trees over a small area .

To feed their young they raid every pondand watercourse in the area for fish , andscour the fields for amphibians. Then, in lateJune and early July, parents and young takewing and scatter for another six months.Every year, possibly since the Ice Age itself, when the Moss was a huge lake, they havereturned. Their Heronry has been accorded“Site of Special Scientific Interest” status andis regarded as being of National significance.

How can the nature lover see these wonders, that are literally on our doorstep? AtMiddlewood the landowner allows accessalong certain paths and the old beech treesharbour many rare species. However, forChat Moss the only possibilities are alongthe Bridgewater Canal towpath betweenWorsley and Boothstown and very limitedaccess from Boothstown and Astley. Furtherout at Irlam and Cadishead, there is againlimited access to the fringes of the Moss.

But even these scant opportunities can berewarding, as witnessed by the Boothstownlady's garden visitors. It is to be hoped thatnow the proposed development of the area(the Salford Forest Park concept) has beendenied, the landowner might considergreater access for wildlife enthusiasts.

It's a well known fact that golf clubs areno different to many other businesses, inthat they have suffered during the recentcredit crunch. Declining memberships andrising costs have led to a lack of inve s t m e n tin golf courses throughout the land withtheir condition suffering accordingly.

Not so at Worsley Golf Club!

Successful efforts to attract new membersand the effective promotion of the Club'ssocial and catering facilities have led toan increase in membership and a busyyear round calendar, enabling a programme of ongoing investment in thecourse and the Club's facilities. Duringthis year's close season, over £30,000will be spent on course imp rovements withf u rth e r plans already scheduled for thefuture.

The positive atmosphere at the Club haseven rubbed off on its golfers with thescratch team reaching the finals of theDunham Forest Trophy this year for onlythe second time in its history!

Worsley still has a small number of fullmemberships available at the discountedrate of just £300 for the rest of the closeseason so why not come down and havea look for yourself? The Club extends thesame warm hospitality to small groups ofvisitors and large societies alike. Or whynot let them handle your Christmas celebration? Their experienced staff andexcellent facilities will ensure you havean occasion to remember.

Surviving the Festive Season

5point planfor

As the party season looms large, there are some simple steps youcan take to reduce the damage

EXERCISE REGULARLYIf fitting in a trip to the gym is next to

impossible, then aim to build in morefrequent, smaller bouts of activity.Choose activities you can easily fit intoyour day: a brisk 10 minute walk atlunchtime, take the stairs rather than thelift or escalator, park at the far side ofthe supermarket car park, go to thewater fountain/toilet on the next floor.Buy a pedometer and aim to do at least5,000 steps a day.

CHOOSE THE HEALTHIER OPTIONS FROM THE FESTIVE MENUTurkey is a great choice - but go easy on the trimmings. One portion ofChristmas pud won't do much damagebut if you have a few meals out planned, then opt for fruit-based desserts for themajority of them. Planning your day today eating is also key. Stock up onhealthy low calorie foods and snacks -lots of white meat, fish, fruit and vegetables - to reduce the likelihood ofreaching for the unhealthy option.

REDUCE THE ALCOHOLIf alcohol is an inevitable part of yoursocial routine, then plan your strategy in

advance. Eat before you go out or drinklow calorie soft drinks before the mealto avoid drinking on an empty stomach.Alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic ones, choose single measuresof spirits or lower strength versions oflager and beer, or drink wine spritzers.

DRINK LOTS OF WATERConsuming 2 glasses before your mealwill help you to feel full so you eatsmaller portions. It will also help toreduce your alcohol intake, and avoidthe hangover (and the inevitablemunchies) the day after.

GET YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP! A late night will play havoc with yourenergy levels and appetite the followingday, making you less likely to exerciseand eat healthily. Enjoy yourself andthen leave at a sensible hour.

Follow these five steps and you'llhave a festive season to remember -and not regret!!
