WWW.IKAREPUBLISHING.COM - 813-991-7843 This month we are pleased to introduce the Fuller Family – Alicia and Glen, their two cats, Stella and Callie, and the imminent arrival (at this writing) of their new baby, Anna Mackenzie Fuller, who is sure to become a new shining star in the neighborhood! Alicia (a Tampa native) and Glen (who was born in Michigan but raised in rural Tennessee) moved to Van Dyke Farms (VDF) from the Berkshire Apartments (in Citrus Park) in early March, 2012. VDF offered the perfect lifestyle choice to the couple – a quiet neighborhood with larger lots and beautiful conservation areas that appealed to Glen (who had been raised on 58 acres in Tennessee) and close and speedy proximity to the city for Alicia, who was used to the hustle and bustle of city life. They both appreciate the well maintained community grounds and friendly neighbors, and the many deer, bobcat, raccoons, Sandhill Cranes and other wildlife that cohabitate here with the rest of us. Alicia and Glen met “down-under” – well, sort of. They met and fell in love when both were in college and working as servers at the original Outback Steakhouse on Henderson Road in Tampa in 2004. After graduating from USF with her Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 2007, Alicia was promoted to the position of Staff Accountant for Bonefish Grill. Two years later she was transferred to the Bloomin Brands Corporate Tax Department and less than three years later, promoted to Sr. Corporate Tax Accountant. While many of us find tax accounting intimidating and even scary, Alicia loves the fact that tax laws are constantly changing, providing the challenge of never-ending opportunities for learning and growth. She is currently working on her CPA. Just like Alicia, Glen was also promoted to the Bloomin Brands home office in 2007 – he to the IT department, where he worked managing POS (point of sale) databases for 750 Outback Steakhouse locations. In 2013, Glen left Bloomin Brands to accept the position of Implementation Engineer with Restaurant Magic Software, where he was responsible for onboarding that company’s new clients to their Data Central software, which integrates with POS and provides reports, payroll, accounting, etc. Glen is still with Restaurant Magic Software, and is now a Senior Implementation Engineer. He enjoys knowing his work provides clients with a successful process that offers a positive return on investment. Married almost seven years, Alicia and Glen enjoy spending quality family time with each other and Stella and Callie (the aforementioned cats); watching movies; and worshipping at beautiful Idlewild Baptist Church. Lately though, they have also enjoyed preparing for the much anticipated arrival of new baby Anna, whose ETA was January 7. Separately, Alicia loves cooking and trying new recipes, working out and staying healthy. For his part, Glen enjoys playing cards, taking walks and staying active, playing any kind of sport. Van Dyke Farms Neighborhood Watch update report: Neighborhood Watch operates in coordination with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Neighborhood Watch Program. Neighborhood Watch is not a committee

of the Van Dyke Farms Homeowner's Association, Inc. nor is it affiliated in any way with the Van Dyke Farms HOA, Inc. This program is run by residents only and we use email, texts and phone chains to alert residents of issues happening in the neighborhood. This is all we use the program for. The duty of a Neighborhood Watch volunteer is to observe suspicious activity and report. NO confrontation. ***Be sure to pick up after your dogs. Please be courteous in how you let your dog do its business on neighboring properties. IT is a county law 00-26.*****. We ask that you kindlly please pick up after your dogs. The phone number for Animal Control Services is 813-744-5660. Thanks always to the Hillsborough County Sheriff Office and the deputies that are working in the county. We do not allow soliciting in Van Dyke Farms. We have signs throughout the neighborhood. If someone is soliciting, please call the non emergency number 247-8200 and report it. Ask for a deputy to come out and remove the solicitors. We have a NO TRESPASS ORDER on file at District III Sheriff’s HQ. If you see anyone trespassing or suspicious activity in the park after sunset and before 6 am, you can call the Sheriff’s office to report it. The address at the park is: 17304 Van Dyke Farms Blvd. Call 247-8200 and report any suspicious activity or trespassing. We do not allow dirt bikes riding in the fields, in the park, in the streets or on the sidewalks. We do not allow alcohol or drugs in the park. It is our community playground and our tennis and basketball courts. Let’s keep it a safe and fun place to play for our residents. ***The Sheriff’s Office reminds all residents to LOCK THEIR VEHICLES AND SHUT THEIR GARAGE DOORS. And please DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES in your cars.*** Remember – If you are the victim of a crime, ALWAYS call the Sheriff’s Office first (or 911). Take care of the immediate situation and your SAFETY first. Then, later call your block captain to let them know. They can decide if we need to alert the community by starting the phone chain, email chain or texting chains for all VDF, or just the affected street or area. If you see a suspicious person or activity……call the non-emergency number for the Sheriff’s office which is 247-8200 and report what you have seen. A deputy can be dispatched to check it out. We want to look out for each other. Thank you all for participating in this important residents only community program.

Thank you to all VDF residents who helped to look for Zoe!

From Jeanette, Tony and Karina Parisi We originally moved to Van Dyke Farms to be close to our daughter and her family. She had often told us what a great p l a c e t h i s was. However, it was not until November that we really came to this firsthand. The dog member of our family had aged and died several months prior. The most likely new members of our family were two inseparable sisters, rescue dogs who were frightened and couldn’t be separated. On bringing them home, one came into the house; the other burst through a lanai screen panel and was gone. As darkness came, it seemed that everyone on Pasture Rd. had come out with a flashlight looking for our little black dog who was gone. And so, the search began. A special lady on Stetson left a note, telling us that she had seen Zoe and had left water and food for her. We had a number of calls in following days from people who had seen her. After each call, we would scramble to put her sister in the car to try to find her. One night she was spotted at the end of N. Mobley and Fitzgerald. About a dozen of our great neighbors appeared with searchlights to help look for her; again, she disappeared into the night. Another night young neighbor children on their way back from an outing asked their parents to drive by where she had last been spotted; they saw her! Yet by the time we got there with her sister, she was long gone… Gradually we heard less and less. After about three weeks, we had a call from an Emergency Clinic. She had been hit by a car and was not responsive. With a great deal of agonizing we decided that she had suffered enough; we asked the clinic to let her go. A very sad story in so many ways. In the meantime, her sister has become part of our lives. Her name is now Karina, (dear little one). She is affectionate and responsive, and being frightened of strangers and loud noises is progressing slowly. With these happenings, we were reminded how fragile and unpredictable life is and we were also brought to a heightened realization of what great neighbors and friends we have in Van Dyke Farms. They shared our concern and our grief and were more helpful than we had ever thought possible. Special people. We are so thankful.

Why Your Pet Is A Great Valentine!

Pets don’t talk, I think we can all agree this is a good thing.

If you worry your pet will destroy your lovely home four seconds after you step out the door, you can put then in a crate/cage. The authorities frown upon this when it comes to dates.

You don’t have to share your dessert with a pet. This is great because dessert is the best part about Valentine’s Day! So you get your tempting torte all to yourself. Perfect!

For the not-so-romantic folks out there, a pet won’t look hopefully, then desperately, and finally disdainfully into your eyes when the evening doesn’t end in a helicopter ride to Paris and a romantic marriage proposal. Won’t happen. Prolonged eye contact totally freaks pets out.

When a pet follows you around it’s cute. Am I right? Pretty much nothing is better than being adored by a pet. If a date follows you around … we call that little phenomenon stalking.

Pets don’t care if you are “presentable” or not. You don’t have to buy expensive shoes to hang out with your pet. You don’t even have to shower. No makeup, no ironing, no Spanx required. Amen.

You will never have to dream up a way to gently/firmly/sneakily “get rid” of a pet. You’d never want to get rid of a pet! Pets are fun, and funny, and goofy.

Pet snuggles are the best. Okay, snuggles from a human can be pretty darn good too, but when your pet nuzzles into the nape of your neck and huffs a sigh, you’ll stay in that exact same position for ages so you don’t disrupt the little sweet thing.

Did we mention pets don’t talk?

So off you go, enjoy your torte…..all of it!

Vacation Tip

When we go on a vacation we assume we will be coming back to a house that is exactly how we left it. Sometimes when we return we notice flashing clocks that indicate the power went off while we gone. No one knows exactly how long the power was out for though. Did the refrigerator/freezer turn off so long that our food defrosted, spoiled, then re froze!?! A simple trick will help

you know. Fill a glass with water and freeze it, before you leave, place a quarter on the top of the frozen water and place it in your freezer. If upon your return, the coin is still on top of the frozen water then you are safe. If the coin happens to be half way down or at the bottom, you should check all your food to be sure it hasn’t spoiled before consuming.
