It Is Official,The Ward L. Quaal Pioneer Awards!Friends and professional colleagues gathered at The Bellagio in Las Vegas, Nevada rose for five minutes in a standing ovation saluting Ward L. Quaal as the annual Broadcasters Foundation of America Pioneer Awards were dedicated in his name. The warmth and respect emanating from those present was overwhelming as Ward humbly thanked the gathering for his honor.

“I will never forget this day and what it means to me and my family,” said Quaal.

“Since I was a very young man I have been very fortunate to have found a wonderful home in broadcasting. The life-long friends I have made number more than any one individual deserves. Over these many years, I have come to understand what it means to be the steward of a broadcast license and the enormous positive impact stewardship can impart. My friends, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this wonderful honor.”

The naming of the Broadcasters Foundation of America Pioneer Awards in Ward Quaal’s honor was made possible by generous benefactions from

The Hubbard Broadcasting Foundation and the McCormick Foundation. Stanley S. Hubbard, chair of Hubbard Broadcasting and Dennis FitzSimons, chair of the McCormick Foundation both spoke at the dedication. Foundation Chair Phil Lombardo presented Quaal with the initial Ward L. Quaal Pioneer Award.

The first six persons to receive Ward L. Quaal Pioneer Awards were fortunate to have the awards personally presented by Ward at the breakfast gathering.

The 2008 recipients were Larry Bentson, chair and chief executive officer of Midcontinent Media, Ed Christian, chair and chief executive officer of Saga Communications, Robert “Doc” Fuller, chair of Bob Fuller Broadcasting, Stanley S. Hubbard, chair, president and chief executive officer of Hubbard Broadcasting, legendary radio personality and radio entrepreneur Bruce “ Cousin Brucie” Morrow and Tom Oakley, president and chief executive officer of Quincy Newspapers, Inc. and the QNI Broadcast Group.

The awards breakfast is made possible each year by the National Association of Media Brokers (NAMB), The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), the Television Bureau of Advertising (TVB) and the Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB). A record 261 friends and colleagues of the honorees attended this year’s gathering.

Twenty-Four-Year-Old Tina Miller Stars“She conducted a clinic!” That was the ubiquitous quote as LPGA Futures of Golf Star, Tina Miller shined in the Harris “Beat the Pro” Competition at the Broadcasters Foundation of America NAB Charity Golf Tournament. The event, sponsored by Broadcasting & Cable and New York Life Investment Management was played on Sunday, April 13 at the Bali Hai Golf Club in Las Vegas Nevada.

Each of the 128 golfers in the annual tournament had the opportunity to best the tee shot of Tina by being closer to the pin. Only 21 in the field managed that feat! Tina is part of the LPGA Futures Tour of young professional golfers looking to qualify for the LPGA Professional Tour. She played in the tournament under the auspices of Play Golf Designs.

A foursome from Dow Lohnes with John Feore as captain won low gross with a team score of 67. Joining Feore in the group was Doug Lowe, Doug Barker and Jim Conschafter.

The BMI foursome took low net honors with a 44. Foursome captain Mike O’Neill was joined by Michael Steinberg, Jose Gonzalez and Dan Spears.

Second low net was won by the Harris foursome with a team score of 50. Captain Ed Adams was joined by Mike Sutton, D. J. Cavanaugh and Jonathan Diven.

2008 Broadcaster’s Foundation of America Celebrity Offshore WeekendThe Ritz Carlton Hotel and Resort in Key Biscayne hosted the Fourth Annual Broadcasters Foundation of America Celebrity Offshore Weekend for the second year. Robin’s egg blue skies, balmy, 80 degree weather and starry nights served to highlight the weekend’s successful goal of raising funds for broadcaster’s in need.

SponsorsLed by Larry Dunn’s Broadcasting & Cable, the 2008 Offshore Celebrity Weekend was graciously supported by sponsors, Arbitron, BMI, CAO Cigars, GE Media & Communications Group, Harris, Carter Broadcast Group, ICBC Broadcast Holdings, Inner City Broadcasting, Latham & Watkins, Marlin Magazine, Media Services Group, NAB, Patrick Communications, Star Media and Westwood One.

Guests & CelebritiesThe Foundation is most appreciative of the guests and celebrities who devote their personal time to the success of our mission. Joining us for the weekend: Crown Prince of the Blues Sammy Blue, Vice President/Associate Publisher Radio Ink Magazine Lois Chooljian, television/radio celebrities and restaurateurs Dan Gasby and B. Smith, St. Louis and Martha’s Vineyarders Paul & Bev Grzymkowski, Radio Advertising Bureau President Jeff Haley, Martha’s Vineyard and Boston’s Alton Hardaway, BMI member and songwriters Shelby Kennedy and Roger Murrah, Marlin Magazine Senior Editor Charlie Levine, CAO Cigar aficionado Mickey Pegg, former NFL defensive star and Kansas City Brigade owner Neil Smith, Martha’s Vineyard Fishing captain to the stars, Buddy Vanderhoop—and his wife Lisa, official Offshore Weekend photographer, and Withers Broadcasting CEO and NAB Radio Board Vice Chairman Russ Withers.

GolfThe weekend activity began Friday at Key Biscayne’s Crandon Golf Course. Set amidst a lush landscape

offering a relaxing golf experience, the picturesque par-72 course is considered one of America’s top 75 upscale public courses by Golf Digest.

Golfers teed off at 1:00pm with a “Shamble”, the RAB’s Ron Ruth version of a scramble. First Place and low gross went to Mike Carter/Carter Broadcast Group, Jon Plesser/WBLS-FM and former NFL great Neil Smith, owner of the Kansas City Brigade arena football team.

Second Place/low net went to Phil Lombardo & Ray Cole/Citadel Communications, Buckley Radio’s Joe Bilotta and Nick Verbitsky/United Stations. ABC Radio Network’s TJ Lambert won for the men’s longest drive and Sheila Knight won for the women’s longest drive (and closest to the pin!).

TennisMary Warfield chaired the Offshore Weekend’s first tennis tournament and she, husband Charles Warfield/ICBC Broadcast Holdings, Radio Ink’s Lois Chooljian and Dennis LeClair handily won the men’s, women’s and singles events. Tennis began Friday with the finals on Saturday, offered for participants who chose not to fish or golf.

Welcome ReceptionAt the Friday, May 2 poolside welcome reception, Foundation President Gordon Hastings welcomed almost 70 participants and guests and thanked sponsors. Chairman Phil Lombardo reminded all about the principal goal of the organization and event, and founding Chairman Skip Finley distributed high tech fishing shoes to team captains as thanks for their support.

Offshore ChallengeAt 7:00 AM on Saturday, May 3, 2008, 49 anglers sailed from Crandon Marina on 12 charter boats in 81 degree weather and a 10 knot wind that developed into very competitive and challenging 4-6 foot seas for the first half of the all day tournament.

True to the spirit of American salt water sport fishing’s ‘catch and release’ emphasis, all billfish and sharks are released unharmed and the only fish that count are edible (Keepers).

Page 39: On The Air - Broadcasters Foundation of America · PDF filechief executive officer of Midcontinent Media, Ed ... 8 On The Air Summer 2008 Phil Lombardo and Bob Fox ... A foursome from

38 On The Air Summer 2008

By tournament’s end at 3 pm, almost 80 eligible fish were tallied that included 64 top line game fish:

5 Sailfish (all released)2 Black Fin Tuna

13 Dolphin Fish (or Dorado or Mahi Mahi)15 King Mackerel

26 Bonito3 Sharks

Scoring was based on type and number of fish and for 2008 only one boat returned empty. In an ironic twist of events, Patrick Communications’ Sea Vous Play, skunked in 2007, led the fleet to victory in 2008.

WinnersThere are 5 prizes in the Offshore Challenge, Grand Prize for the individual with the biggest fish, first prize for the team with the most points, second prize for the team with the second most points, third prize for the team with the most fish caught—that is not the first or second prize winner and a mystery prize for the most interesting fish. The mystery prize was established as a celebration of nature to illustrate the wide and fascinating variety of creatures anglers are fortunate enough to see on trips.

Mystery PrizeGE Commercial Finance Sr. Vice President Garret Komjathy won the prize for capturing a Sting Ray this year. Aboard New Moon with songwriter Roger Murrah and BMI’s Shelby Kennedy, the GE team placed well in the Challenge with 18 points and 9 fish—two of them the highly prized Grouper. Runners up were George Reed with a Hammerhead Shark and Dan Gasby with a Sand Eel Fish.

Third PlaceICBC Vice Chairman and Challenge Founding Chairman Skip Finley’s team earned Third Place for 10 fish and 32 points aboard Carrie Ann. The ICBC Team including Karen Finley, Paul Grzymkowski, Dan Gasby and B. Smith caught a wide range of fish including 5 Dolphin Fish, 2 Kings, 2 Mutton Snappers and a Yellow Tail—in addition to Dan Gasby’s mystery Sand Eel Fish that did not count for points.

Second PlaceInterep’s McGavren Guild President Lisa Sirotka’s team aboard the appropriately named Lisa L won second place scoring 54 points with 5 fish that included 2 Sail Fish and 3 Kings. This marked the first time that

2 Sailfish were caught by one team that included Cobb Company’s Dennis Le Clair (who caught a sailfish), Interep people Bill McEntee, Steve Moore (who caught the winning sailfish) and Mike Nadeau. The Interep team moved up to second from their Third Place finish in 2007.

Steve Moore, Lisa Sirotka, Bill McEntee, Mike Nadeau

First PlaceLarry Patrick’s Patrick Communications with his Team of Greg Guy, Dean Goodman, David Jacobs and Russ Withers took first place with 73 points and an astounding 24 game fish caught. Patrick Communications accounted for 6 Kings and 14 Bonito in for the first place win in the 2008 Offshore Challenge. In addition to trophies, the Patrick team will have a picture in an upcoming Marlin Magazine article about the Offshore Weekend and each will receive a one-year subscription. We are particularly indebted to Marlin Magazine Senior Editor Charlie Levine for this attention.

Grand PrizeInterep’s Steve Moore took the grand prize from last year’s winner Phil Lombardo with an approximate 7 ½ foot, 65 pound Sailfish—and one of the best Offshore Challenge photographs ever. This year’s Calcutta raised additional funds for the foundation—and 35% of the pot went to Steve as the Grand Prize winner. Sailfish are prized game fish worldwide and one of the most exhilarating personal sporting challenges. RAB President Jeff Haley caught an approximate 7 ½ foot, 60 pounder, Bill Whitley an approximate 7 foot, 45 pounder, Brian Stone a 7 foot 40 pounder and Dennis LeClair landed one of uncertain size. Congratulations Steve Moore!

(L-R) Chris Bowie, Steve Moore/Interep, Ryan Acera. Team Interep was aboard 43’ Lisa L/Captain Mike

The Winning Sailfish!

Leader Board, 2008

53 Points, 9 Fish (Second Place Team 2007)Team Captain Phil Lombardo aboard Reel Time with anglers Brian Cobb and Ray Cole landed 2 Dolphin Fish and 7 Bonito.

51 Points, 8 Fish (First Place Team 2007)Team captain Pepe Sutton/Inner City Broadcasting had to leave before the event so honorary Captain and ICBC board member Craig Browne aboard Wild Life with anglers, Alton Hardaway, Jon Plesser and Capt. Buddy Vanderhoop brought in a Dolphin Fish, 5 Kings, 1 Bonito and 1 Keeper.

47 Points, 7 FishTeam Captain Scott Knight aboard Thomas Flyer with anglers Mickey Pegg, Sheila Knight and Brian Stone captured a Sailfish, Blackfin Tuna, 3 Dolphin Fish and

2 Kings. The Sailfish was Brian Stone’s second in Offshore Challenge action.

26 Points, 3 FishTeam Captain George Reed of The Media Services Group team aboard Miss Britt 1 caught a Sailfish, a Blackfin Tuna and a small Hammerhead Shark. Anglers Bill Whitley, Steven Sloan, Laurie Reed and Eddie Esserman had a far better showing in 2008 than 2007.

24 Points, 3 FishTeam Captain Ron Ruth was unable to attend and star experienced angler Norm Feuer came down with a bug prior to sailing so RAB President Jeff Haley stepped to the mast with angler Lois Chooljian producing a Sailfish, a King and a small Shark.

Based upon a rule adjustment in 2008 that reduced the points for and number of Dolphin Fish from 2007, in 2008 the Offshore Challenge generated 392 points as compared (on an adjusted basis) with 225 for 2007. The largest differences were from the additional Sail Fish (5 vs. 4), large number of Kings (15 vs. 3), and a higher quality of game fish resulting from the full day tournament.

At the awards banquet which was held oceanside at the Dunes Restaurant at The Ritz Carlton. Micky Pegg of CEO International Cigar auctioned off three fabulous All American limited edition cigar humidors containing CAO signature hand wrapped cigars. Each humidor and cigars, all donated by CAO, fetched $2,000 in support of the foundation’s mission. CAO also provided cigars at the opening reception, golf tournament and on board during the tournament.

Patrick Communications President & CEO Larry Patrick and his wife Laurie donated a cruise for five couples aboard the America’s Cup Yacht Intrepid off Newport, Rhode Island this summer. The day of sailing included dinner for the group at the New York Yacht Club in Newport. The winning bid was $10,000 with one hundred percent of the money going directly to the foundation’s mission.

Your Help Literally Saves Lives

Broadcasters Foundation of America

BROADCASTERS FOUNDATION OF AMERICA

An all too familiar story.

The story of this elderly couple in their late 70s is all too typical of the cases that come to the attention of the Broadcasters Foundation of America. The husband had worked in television until his retirement some 13 years ago.

For several years, they managed to maintain their independence with social security, savings and part time work. Six years ago, the wife was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer. The husband left his part time job and became his wife’s full-time caregiver. They struggled along quietly and independently with no family members able to offer support until all of their resources were completely exhausted.

This situation was brought to the attention of the foundation, which made an immediate emergency grant to keep them in their apartment. The foundation then placed them on a monthly grant which combined with Social Security allows them to meet their monthly living expenses, thus somewhat relieving the day to day financial pressure which they had faced quietly and alone.

Your support of the Broadcasters Foundation of America has placed you by this couple’s side with a helping hand...

Message From The Presidenturing the course of a career each of us can point to a few

occasions that were impressionable, memorable and most worthy of reflection. For many, the dedication of the Ward L. Quaal Pioneer Awards was an iconic moment.

Ward Quaal’s career has been that of the possible, beginning with the fulfillment of his boyhood dream to one-day work at the legendary WGN in Chicago. His knees still remind him that even in those early days broadcasting was a better career bet than pursuing his University of Michigan football heroics.

Upon Ward’s arrival, WGN Radio had already attained legendary status, and Ward absorbed the pride and prestige that flowed from a broadcast facility that had acquired almost human dimension. A small town boy quickly learned how a local broadcast station could flow through the veins of the citizens of even a huge metropolis like Chicago. That ethos led to his building WGN-TV into the finest local independent television station in America.

To this day, Ward refers to the WGN audience as citizens. “Citizen” is synonymous with the respect Ward has always had for his listeners and viewers. Ward has repeatedly been referred to as the “Dean of American Broadcasting.” The appellation “Broadcasting’s Leading Citizen” is also most appropriate.

Larry Bentson, Ed Christian, Bob Fuller, Stanley Hubbard, Bruce Morrow and Tom Oakley enjoyed the special privilege to be among the

first Ward L. Quaal Pioneer Award recipients. Congratulations.

We are grateful to Dennis FitzSimons of the McCormick Foundation and Stanley Hubbard of the Hubbard Broadcasting Foundation for establishing the Ward L. Quaal Pioneer Awards.

All grants made by the foundation are reviewed minimally on an annual basis. This year in particular we are witnessing that many of our recipients are being impacted by the downturn in the economy, which in fact disproportionably affects those with the least. Especially during these times individuals on fixed incomes, which applies to all of our grantees, suffer the most. Looking to the near and long-term the foundation board will continue to adjust the scope of our grant program to assure that those receiving our help will be able to maintain their dignity within an acceptable living standard.

Living on a fixed income has never been easy, and we remind those of you who are now considering your year end gift to the foundation to take into consideration our forever expanding financial obligation to our colleagues in need. The Broadcasters Foundation of America Endowment Fund and the Corporate Angel Initiative is our safety net for both today and tomorrow. While our annual fund raising events are very successful, these activities will reach a plateau in terms of the net revenues delivered in support of our mission, adding to the importance of your Endowment Campaign and Angel Initiative gifts. As always, we appreciate your generosity and

we urge you to review the 2007 Broadcasters Foundation of America Annual Report, which has just been released and view the names of the individuals and companies whose benefaction make our work possible.

The Broadcasters Foundation of America website is under redesign. The all-new site will be operational this fall allowing you, among other things, to contribute and participate in our events with secure on-line financial transactions. We are also developing an electronic newsletter and providing a Blog on the site where supporters and members can share ideas with colleagues.

Congratulations are in order to Bill Moll, Paul Karpowicz and Liz Burns for the record setting success of the NAB Charity Golf Tournament the details of which are prominent in this issue. The same kudos’s apply to Rick Buckley, Larry Dunn and Skip Finley for the outstanding success of the recent Offshore Family Weekend. With all of the fun reflected in the photographs taken at these events, not a moment is lost on the reason why everyone participates. Enjoying a great day of golf or fishing while at the same time helping colleagues in need continues to be a rewarding combination for everyone.

Enjoy the summer, and I look forward to seeing many of you at the 2008 Broadcasters Foundation of America Celebrity Golf Tournament September 15 at The Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, New York.

The Broadcasters Foundation of America Angel Initiative is entering its fourth year. We are delighted with the number of radio and television broadcasting companies that have made an annual commitment to the mission of the foundation by becoming a Corporate Angel.

The 2008 Angel corporate campaign is your company’s opportunity to join those already making an annual gift to help us insure that no call for help from a fellow broadcaster will go unanswered. The Angel Initiative is the way our industry can take care of its own people in their special time of need. It is all about “giving back.”

The number of requests for help made to the foundation is increasing dramatically. We have no way of accurately predicting what the future demand on our resources will be. The Angel Annual Corporate Giving Initiative is an essential element in our being able to provide critical assistance into the future.

We hope that we can count on you becoming an Angel in 2008. Contact Gordon Hastings at 203.862.8577 for further details.

On behalf of all of those whom we serve, thank you for your support.
