SHELTER ISLAND HEIGHTS

The Shelter Island Prospect House, built in 1872, became the social center of the Island. It had a full orchestra which played at both lunch and dinner. It offered it’s guests a formal dinner dance every Saturday night. It also boasted a cocktail lounge, beauty parlor and barber shop. Our cover photo shows the 1923 fire that damaged part of the structure. It was repaired and reopened the following year as the New Prospect Hotel. The hotel went on to survive the roaring 20’s, the Great Depression and the early years of WWII. Then in 1942 disaster struck again. Just before it was scheduled to open for the summer season, another fire broke out in the middle of the night...

Widely Known Hotel On Long Island, Burns.Shelter Island, June 26 (AP).---New Prospect House, for 50 years one of the best-known hostelries on the eastern end of Long Island, was destroyed at 4 A. M. today by a fire of undetermined origin. The 100-room, six-story frame building burned to the ground. Eighteen guests who were in the house, fleeing in their night clothes, escaped injury as did 60 employes[sic] who were in a nearby annex. Notables from all walks of life have been guests at the house, which occupied a high promontory overlooking Greenport Harbor off the tip of Eastern Long Island.

Following the 1923 fire, the Prospect House re-opened in 1924

as The New Prospect Hotel. Here are some of the newspaper

accounts reporting the destruction.

ANOTHER HISTORICAL SHELTER ISLAND FIREThe lavish Manhanset House resort opened in 1873 and soon became a well known destination.

The New York Times report on August 14, 1896 headline reads:MANHANSET HOUSE AFIRE; THE GREAT HOTEL ON SHELTER ISLAND PARTIALLY DESTROYED.

Flames Worked Their Way from the Laundry to the Bridge Connecting the Old and New Buildings and Almost Consumed the Old -- Gunpowder Used to Check the Fire -- Cottages in Danger for a Time -- Guests All Depart.

GREENPORT, L.I., Aug. 13. -- The Manhanset House, on Shelter Island, opposite this village, was partly destroyed by fire today. The fire department from this village, aided by the streams of water thrown on the flames from the steam yachts and other steam craft in the bay, preserved the newer portion of the hotel and also the annex.

The Manhanset Hotel was rebuilt in 1897. Then on May 11, 1910, lightning struck the Manhanset Hotel at 1:20 o’clock this morning, and the main building was burned to the ground, with a loss of about $375,000. But for a heavy shower which followed the lightning, the entire colony of cottages surely would have been de-

stroyed, as sparks were dropped upon the roofs of scores of buildings. ¢

LIFE JACKET WORLD RECORD DAY! SATURDAY MAY 21Peconic Bay Power Squadron, eastern Long Island’s local unit of the United States Power Squadrons will participate in “Ready, Set, Wear It!” at Strong’s Marine, 2400 Camp Mineola Rd., Mattituck. The worldwide event kicks of the start of National Safe Boating Week and is designed to raise boating safety awareness. Participants will be part of the attempt to break a world record for the most life jackets worn at one time. Peconic Bay Power Squadron will have an information table set up and will be conducting Vessel Safety Inspections from 9am to 4pm, with the “Ready, Set, Wear It” official photo at 11am, and it will be followed by a flare demonstration. Larger boats are required to carry pyrotechnic visual distress signals (flares), but few people have ever actually used them or even seen how they are ignited. “Ready, Set, Wear It!” is sponsored by the National Safe Boating Council and the Canadian Safe Boating Council, with support from allied organizations including the United States Power Squadrons, to raise awareness to the importance of wearing life jackets. Last year groups across the U.S. and Canada were joined by life jacket wearing participants in Australia, Brazil, Finland, and Japan. Participants will not only help to break the world record, but will also see and learn about the many different life jacket options that are available to today’s boaters. Some will even inflate the light weight suspender style jackets that many modern boaters prefer. If you have never used one of these inflatable jackets, come and seen how it works. The event is free. To learn more call Larry Hynes at 631-929-4369 or visit www.ReadySetWearIt.com or www.SafeBoatingCampaign.com.

In Riverhead, some of the stops on the tour include a small family-run farm that sells eggs and chickens all year, a supplier of baby chicks and chicken supplies, a farm raising chickens organically, and families who raise chickens for the fresh eggs. In Southold, the heart of the North Fork farm country, you can visit a couple bed and breakfasts, a homeowner who has built a hen house with a green roof, a goat farm that also raises chickens, family farms, and more families who raise chickens for fun and fresh eggs. Stop In For A Test Drive TODAY!

“The ’17 Chrysler Pacifica is a hands-down Wards 10 Best Interiors winner…The level of sophistication built into the new small van is immediately evident…inviting and spacious layout, functional design and all-around solid craftsman-

ship…”

-Ward’s Auto World

“It’s an all-new minivan, with a new name—and by our estimate, it’s also the best. As a family hauler, safety is key; Chrysler boasts of more than 100 standard and available features includ-ing a surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control, and forward-collision alert. Stow n’ Go seats are standard; a

built-in vacuum is on the top model....”
