IT’S GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH FOOTBALL!! Three things today:

(1) WHERE’S MY BUS?? That’s what some people in Rochdale were wondering recentlywhen they were waiting for a late bus. Very late in fact, because the driver had goneunder a low bridge near the station & had taken the roof off! 17 people were injured &amazingly, the bus company were very quick to dismiss reports that it had been thedriver’s FIRST day behind the wheel! The official reason was given as, “the driver took awrong turn”. Well, that bit’s true, if nothing else!

(2) THE END OF AN ERA?? 2016 could well be a big, big year in the world of rock music.First, Black Sabbath announced recently that they will undertake their final world tour nextyear & then ex-Deep Purple & Rainbow guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who has been playingminstrel music this past 20-odd years, announced that he was going to play rock “for onelast time” in 2016 by putting a specially-selected band together for 4 European rock gigs, before his arthritis affects him too much. Expect a CD/DVD package in both instances, butwhat a shame the Bristol Arena won’t be ready by this time next year because THOSE arethe sort of gigs that would sell out such a venue!

(3) SO WHATEVER HAPPENED TO HEALTH AND SAFETY? Bristol commuter trains arebad enough, but trying to get into London every day for work must be like hell on wheels. They reckon 28% of passengers never get a seat & 40% of trains are over-capacity aswell, with everyone crammed in like sardines. And the most over-crowded train of themall is said to be the 4.22am (!) Glasgow to Manchester Airport train which regularly hasdouble the number of passengers on board than it should officially carry! I guess at thattime of the morning, most of those passengers sleep standing up!

THIRD BATCH OF QUICKIES: Had to laugh at a Bristol City fan on social media, who moanedthat he had “nothing to do” on the Saturday during the September international break & that he wasmissing his footy fix. Wonder if he has ever heard of non-league football? Someone did tell him that, mind you – me!.......And staying down in BS3, did anyone notice that the prices to watch BristolRugby went up on the quiet during the close season?? £25 quid for a seat in the new South Stand towatch Championship rugby, and I am reliably informed that there are cheaper tickets than that in theRugby PREMIERSHIP! Bristol Rugby quickly responded by REDUCING ticket prices in the AtyeoStand to a mere £16……Meanwhile, back in football, Chelsea had to defend their controversialloan policy recently, when it was announced that they had at least 30 (!) players out on loansomewhere! Well, if you choose to sign everything that moves, simply to stop someone else signinga particular player, then this is always going to happen……Hope someone else wins the PremierLeague this year. Think we’re all fed up with Mourinho, Costa & Co these days……

FOURTH BATCH OF QUICKIES: Yes, it’s Chelsea again, this time 3-1 losers at Everton! JoseMourinho said afterwards, “People are happy to see me struggle”. Yes, I said as much 2 lines ago &their fans on TalkSport sounded almost suicidal! Mind you, if Diego Costa went on to the pitch everyweek to try & score goals instead of trying to pick a fight with someone, it might help…..Meanwhile,Leeds-based Guiseley took just 65 fans to Torquay the other week in the Conference (OK,National League), which is not many, but they are newly promoted & probably punching well abovetheir weight, but good luck to them; hope they stay up…..And Manchester City’s 1-0 win at CrystalPalace was the first time they’ve won 5 away games in a row since 1912 (!!), the year the Titanicwent down…… Meanwhile, well done to Ajax for a great gesture to the fans at the recent EuropaLeague game v Celtic. It was Ajax’s 500th home game at the Amsterdam ArenA, so every fan in the47,000 crowd received a free souvenir pennant to mark the occasion. Perhaps we should dosomething like that here at MUFC when we reach a particular milestone home game? Anyone outthere like to work out how many home games we’ve had here at Cossham Street?

AND FINALLY: You have to laugh, don’t you? The recent Champions League draw has given us alot of tasty-looking matches. Jose Mourinho is going back to Porto. Di Maria is going back to RealMadrid. Memphis Depay is going back to PSV Eindhoven. And Liverpool are going back towatching Emmerdale again! THE FIELD MARSHALL

FIELD REVIEW -22

It was somewhat of a shock to lose JAKECOX between our last game here withWINCHESTER CITY, and our FA Cup trip toBROCKENHURST, as he made the decisionto return to Yate Town. We thank him for hisefforts on our behalf and wish him the bestfor the future.

Our 2-2 draw here with ‘The Citizens’ was afast-paced affair and not without incident.‘The Citizens’ showed why they are doingwell this season, but although we matchedthem well, they were always dangerous, butall credit to the team who worked very hardfor the point.

The main talking point centred around theirkeeper’s foul on STEVE DAVIES, on theedge of the box. Should he have seen red fordenying a goalscoring opportunity? Well mostpeople thought so, but the ref, who bookedeight players during the game, decided ayellow was sufficient.

Ahead of our trip to Hants to face the‘Badgers’, we completed the signing ofCONNOR WALDON from SwindonSupermarine and he gave a good account ofhimself in a strong first-half. His powerfulheader hit the bar in the 3rd minute andmoments later, LEWIS POWELL saw hisheader cleared off the line. Had thosechances gone in, it could have been sodifferent.

However, The Badgers scored with their firstreal attack after 20 minutes and we neverrecovered. FA Cup progress must wait untilnext season! It was a game that had all-roundrepercussions and during the next few days, keeper CONOR THOMPSON was releasedand we wish him all the best for the future.

It gave KANE MANNINGS the opportunity tomake his debut for the tough trip toSHORTWOOD UNITED and what a debutthat turned out to be!

He was unlucky to be red-carded for analmost identical scenario to the Winchesterincident mentioned above, and with MATTGROVES also taking an early bath………….

FIELD REVIEW -1

…….it became an almost impossible second-half for the nine men left to try and salvagethe game.

We extend a warm welcome to Managers’John Evans, Alex Sykes and everyone whohas made the short trip from SHORTWOODUNITED. This is an FA Trophy tie and thechance for us to make amends for that ‘badday at the office’. The Wood have enjoyed agood record against us both home and away, since coming into the Evo-Stik LeagueSouthern.

Should a replay be necessary, then it will beon Tuesday (6th) at Meadowbank.

Our FA Cup defeat meant that we had nogame on the 26th and with LARKHALL beingforced to replay with Havant & Waterloovile, itmeant also that our scheduled midweek tripto Plain Ham, was also called off.

So, two weeks without action, at least meansthat everyone should have recovered fromtheir injuries, but I am sure that Thommo, Lee& Boris would have preferred some action!

Because of those sendings-off atMeadowbank, it means that KANEMANNINGS is suspended for this afternoonand so we shall have a different keeper onparade.

It is just the one game but for MATTGROVES, he will also be missing and issupended for the next two games.

We have some much-needed home gamescoming up during October. WANTAGETOWN are here on 17th, with WIMBORNETOWN just three days later.

EVESHAM UNITED are here on the 27th andif we can edge through today, we will finishthe month also at Cossham Street when wewould host either BASHLEY orCINDERFORD in the next round.

Although, ‘The Wood’ may have otherideas……….

Enjoy the game.EDITOR

More often than not, an official would prefer not to get a mention in The Non-League Paper. It’s a job where it’s much better to fly under the radar.

But sometimes we just have to talk about them and United Counties League flagger John Clark is noexception.

On Tuesday night at Desborough Town v Harborough Town the 61-year-old reached a remarkable1,000 games.Nearly all have been as an assistant referee since he ran the line for a UCL game back in December1974.

Clark remembers his debut fondly. The man in the middle for Stamford against Spalding that day wasBrian Hill, who went onto take charge of the 1988 FA Cup final between Liverpool and Wimbledon.

He also recalled an irate Stamford-supporting pensioner trying to attack the officials as they left thepitch with her umbrella! Something he assured was seen as humorous in those day.

Speaking to John it was clear how much he loves his time in the black. He says he’s made manyfriends through the refereeing community and he plans to keep going as long as he can.

When he does decide to hang up his flag, the leagues in the area will no doubt feel his retirement.Without people like John giving up their time to do something they love, football won’t happen.

Officials may be maligned by some, but where would we be without them and their dedication? When starting out, it can be a lonely, dare I say, an intimidating job.

At the park levels it can’t be easy to turn up all by yourself and take charge of 22 players, plussubstitutes, supporters and managers, all trying to put pressure on you and influence you.

If they don’t like your decisions then you are on your own.

That’s why John says it’s so important for officials to help each other.

“I just really enjoy it,” he told me. “But I can honestly say if all matches under the auspices of the FAwere controlled by three officials then there would be more referees.

“One of the reasons why there’s a fall-out of referees at grass-roots level is because they are all ontheir own. It’s like the loneliness of the long-distance runner. When these young lads start refereeingon the local parks, it’s them against the rest of the world.

“I’m a big believer that nobody helps us because they are not there to help us. So if we don’t helpeach other in our three person team then we’ve got problems. We must support each other.”

And we must support them.

Matt Badcock

FIELD REVIEW -2

FIRST BATCH OF QUICKIES: “The Sub’s Bench” on Made in Bristol TV has its critics, and Iunderstand why, but the show is certainly doing its bit to promote local non-league football. TheBristol Manor Farm commercial boss was on there a few weeks ago – big publicity then for our oldpals down at The Creek……. Meanwhile, Guernsey FC must wait another season to make apiece of history, by staging their first FA Cup tie on home island soil, after they were beaten 2-1 byPhoenix Sports in a replay at Lewes. The replay was played at a neutral venue, as, under currentFA rules, any replay that Guernsey faces MUST be played away. Why??........And fair play toGerman mega-giants Bayern Munich, who donated £750k to help migrants wanting to go toGermany, as well as agreeing to set up a training camp for those arriving in the city…… And theother week, Qatar thumped Bhutan by 15-0 (!) in a 2018 World Cup qualifier! You can see all thegoals in a 78-second segment on the BBC website. Bhutan are the lowest-ranked side in the WorldCup & you can see why. But hang on, the 2018 World Cup? That’s the one in Russia, isn’t it? So,after all the Sepp Blatter stuff about the 2018 & 2022 World Cups, you would have at least thoughthe’d fix it for Qatar to qualify for Russia via a brown envelope before they stage it all themselves in2022! And that’s another thing – Qatar 2022. With the Middle East in an on-going crisis that couldtake years to resolve, there’s more chance of me becoming President of the USA than Qatar stagingthe World Cup in 7 years’ time!.......And now FIFA are looking at Blatter himself. It’s been coming!

SECOND BATCH OF QUICKIES: Now there were some interesting photos in the Bristol Postthe other week. One showed City boss Steve Cotterill wearing what looked like a sky blue shirt & amaroon tie. Now what does THAT tell you??........And then there were the pictures of City loansigning Liam Moore & Rovers signing Adam Drury from Man City. Moore was pictured holding up aCity shirt & beaming all over his face, whilst, in the next column, Drury looked as glum as he couldpossibly be, as if someone had just told him, “No Adam, this isn’t BLACKBURN Rovers, this is……”He was gone within a week…… And it must have been a little daunting for them – that’s whatneutrals may have thought when they saw that Toolstation League side Wincanton went down 8-1 inthe FA Vase at Salisbury – before a gate of 625!...... Meanwhile, I noted that during the BristolRovers v Oxford game on Sky recently that at only 1 minute & 17 seconds into the game, Roversfans were singing, “If you all hate Bristol City, clap your hands”. Surely, at such an early point in thegame, they might have done better to urge on their own team right from the off???....... AndEngland duly qualified for France 2016 with a 6-0 drubbing of minnows San Marino, who I reckonwould probably lose to any Southern or Toolstation League side you can think of. In the past, SanMarino have simply failed to get out of their own half – intentionally – in matches against anybody &tactics like that give the little teams a bad name. They were slightly more adventurous v Englandrecently – only slightly – but were soon back into their old ways of only playing in one half. Blimey, when you think that this lot’s striker hasn’t actually scored an international goal for SEVEN YEARS,then you do wonder why they even bother playing, because they never actually go out to attack; justdefend & try & keep the score down. Pathetic. Just have a go, for crying out loud!

AND SO WAYNE ROONEY DULY BROKE BOBBY CHARLTON’S ENGLAND GOALS RECORD!Well, it was always going to happen & it became just a question of when, rather than if – and bear inmind that Rooney will surely be around the England scene for maybe another 5 years, so it’s aquestion of whether he’ll take his total into the 60s or even the 70s? Whatever he ends up with, thatrecord is going to be around for some time to come.

Some people will always query the fact that he only ever seems to score for England in endless, almost meaningless qualifiers & that he has never done the business enough on the bigger stage ofthe main tournaments themselves. True, but then the WHOLE England team have never done thebusiness on the bigger stage either, have they? Not for a long time! On that basis, some will alsosay, hang on, Rooney has scored 1 goal in the last 3 World Cups, whilst Gary Lineker scored TENgoals in 2 World Cups. Big difference!

But at the end of the day, regardless of the silly money he’s on – which is what annoys most people iftruth be told – Rooney has scored 300-odd goals for club & country & there’s not many peoplearound these days who’ve done that. Well done Wayne. Now do it in France 2016! (Continued)

FIELD REVIEW - 20

This is the fourth season at Southern League level for The ‘Wood, and after finishing 8th in 2012/13,6th in 2013/14, and 11th in 2014/15, they have made another strong start to the new campaign. Ourlast meeting, at Meadowbank, just two weeks ago, saw us go down by 1-4. A convincing win for

‘The Wood’ on a day when we finished the game with nine men!!

SHORTWOOD UNITED AFC were formed in 1900and since that date have played at four differentgrounds – Nailsworth Playing Field, Table Land,Wallow Green and finally, the current ground,Meadowbank.

The club has been at Meadowbank since 1972,which includes an all-weather training area openedby the late Ted Croker. Floodlights were installedin 1989, with a match against Swindon Town commemorating their official launch.Gradual improvements over the years culminated in a major enhancement in 2009, tomeet ground grading critera for future promotions. This included refurbishment of themain stand, the erection of a new 50-seater stand opposite, new dug-outs andturnstiles and an overhaul of the dressing rooms.

In 2010, a new pitch barrier was added giving Shortwood a ground to be proud of,befitting the level of football played by the club. The pitch has been improved over theyears, with new drainage recently added. The hard work achieved by the currentgroundsman, has seen the surface receive many accolades, including recognition bythe F.A. in 2009 & 2010.

During the 1970s, Shortwood were playing their football in the Stroud League andthey progressed through promotion to the Gloucestershire Northern Senior leagueand then the Gloucestershire County League, where they spent seven seasons. Theyfinished champions in 1981/82 and were promoted to the Hellenic Premier, but thatfirst season was disastrous and after finishing 15th/16th, they were relegated toDivision One.

However, they bounced straight back by finishing runners up in Division One. In 1983,they won the Division One Cup and the GFA Trophy and in 1984/85 were HellenicLeague champions. It was not until the 1991/92 campaign that they tasted successagain, but on this occasion they were treble winners of the League, GFA Trophy againand the Stroud Charity Cup.

They had three season of finishing in the leading places, but from 1995 through to themid 2000 seasons, they were either just below halfway or in the lower half of the table.

2007/08 saw a resurgence in the club’s fortunes, finishing 5th and defeating Ardley 4-2in the final of the Supplementary Cup. They pushed their success even further in in

08/09, having a good run in the FA Cup, being semi-finalists in the League Cup and pressing theeventual champions Hungerford Town to the final day of the season. ‘The Wood’ were pipped to thetitle on goal difference after amassing 99 pts and scoring 99 goals.

This fine form continued into 2009/10, when they again finished in a runners-up position, this time toAlmondsbury Town, and it was ‘The Almonds’ who also denied them success in the GFA Trophyfinal. They reached the final of the Floodlit Cup and enjoyed a good run in both the FA Cup and FAVase.

continued…Having lost the away leg 0-3 to Reading Town, they produced one of the most excitingcomebacks and entertaining matches ever seen at Meadowbank. The scoreremained goal-less until the 67th minute when finally, the deadlock was broken, and with the game going into extra-time, Shortwood ended as 5-0 winners.

By their own high standards, Shortwood’s league campaign was adisappointment, finishing 6th, but there was more silverware added in the shapeof the GFA Trophy, with a 1-0 final win against Tuffley Rovers.

The season 2011/12, however, proved the most pivotal in the club’s history! Not only did they reachthe quarter-final of the FA Vase, they also reached the final of the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup andthe GFA Trophy final, again. Most importantly however, was their league position, when they wererunners-up once more, just a point behind Oxford City Nomads. With Nomads not applying forpromotion and ‘The Wood’ filling all the relevant criteria, the club took its place in The Evo-StikLeague Southern, Division One South & West.

In 2013/14, Shortwood enjoyed great success in the FA Cup. They made national television, through BT SPORT, when they hosted PORT VALE in The First Round Proper. There was to be nofairytale ending, of course, but they did themselves proud with an excellent display and only twovery late goals gave Vale a 4-0 win. They had already made the news with their 4th qualifyingsuccess against ALDERSHOT TOWN, after holding them at Meadow bank and winning the replay2-1 at the Recreation Ground.Their earlier FA Cup successes included a 2-1 home win over Egham Town, and three wins on theroad at Dorchester Town (1-0), Didcot Town (1-0) and Aylesbury (5-1). They also had a decent FACup run in 2014/15, beating Shrivenham, Cirencester Town and Oxford City before falling 1-3 in the3rd qualifying round to Bath City, in a replay at Meadowbank, following a draw at Twerton Park.

The Management team of JOHN EVANS & ALEX SYKES are now in their third season together andthey are looking to improve on last season’s position of 11th, which was slightly disappointing, aftertwo good placings, but was due mainly to several players moving on to playing at a higher level.

JOHN EVANS (Manager) - After St Paul's College Cheltenham, John started in senior football as aplayer with Forest Green, followed by seven years at Gloucester City. Two years at Trowbridge inthe Conference was followed by a season at Cheltenham Town. He finished his playing career atShortwood winning the Hellenic League. He started his management career at Brimscombe F.C.This was followed by a first stint at Forest Green. A first stint as player coach at Shortwood Unitedunder manager Pat Casey saw the Hellenic League and GFA trophy double achieved in 1992. Asecond stint at FGR as coach under Casey followed. The last 15 years has seen John leadShortwood Utd with successful Cup Runs in the F.A. Vase, Trophy and Cup followed by promotionto the Southern League in 2012.

ALEX SYKES (Manager) - Previously a professional with Mansfield Town FC, an England FutsalInternational and well over 250 appearances for Forest Green Rovers which included twochampionships and an FA Trophy appearance at Wembley, Alex's previous clubs also includeNuneaton Borough, Bath City and latterly over 150 games for Gloucester City. This included 27goals in their promotion winning season to Conference North. Alex then stepped into managementas Assistant Player/Manager at Bishops Cleeve FC then taking over as manager in the 2011/12season, guiding them to their highest ever league position.

FIELD REVIEW -16

PHOTOCALLGOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO COSSHAM STREET for today’s FA Trophyclash against our very welcome friends from SHORTWOOD UNITED. Thank you for your attendanceand for buying this programme. First of all, it’s great to have a home game again! We have, ofcourse, already met Shortwood very recently – more on that later – so both clubs already know eachother well. Please give Our Boys all your support as we strive to pick up the win, the prize money & aplace in the next round – COME ON THE FIELD!

OUR LAST HOME GAME v WINCHESTER CITY seems like a million years ago right now & it saw usend up drawing 2-2 in a game which I felt we should have won. Winchester had made a great start tothe season, scoring plenty of goals & they have clearly come on leaps & bounds in the past year ortwo since they were last here, but even though we took the lead twice (and remember, we took thelead THREE times in previous home games v Didcot & Bishops Cleeve), we couldn’t hold it & for theneutrals at least, it was probably a fair result. But I still felt we should have won, even thoughWinchester came more into the game after the break. We got off to a flyer with a thumping headerfrom SCOTT BRICE after 2 minutes & then LEWIS POWELL scored one of his typical predatory goalson 82 minutes, after Winchester had levelled, only for them to go & level again near the end.

THE TELLING FACTOR FOR ME was the fact that their keeper’s awful, way-outside-the-boxchallenge on STEVE DAVIES in the 2nd half only received a yellow card – one of SIX cards thatWinchester picked up on the day. Only the referee will know why he didn’t give out a straight red cardbecause if you saw that incident on TV at 10 different games, I think 9 of the referees would have hadno hesitation in showing a red card. (Look what happened to KANE MANNINGS at Shortwood theother week!) The keeper made some good saves afterwards as well, but then again, you could arguehe shouldn’t have been on the pitch by then anyway. Nonetheless, the game ended 2-2 & I think wemight have taken that before the game, but as THOMMO said in his social media pod-cast interviewafterwards, this was more about 2 points dropped rather than 1 gained.

THE FOLLOWING WEEK ALSO SAW TWO DEPARTURES FROM THE CLUB in JAKE COX &IBRAHIM DIALLO. Jake has re-joined Yate Town, which perhaps was not quite so unexpected aftertheir 7-day approach for him the previous week. Jake may have left the Bluebells back in thesummer, but was lured back & perhaps he realised that, after 6 years at Lodge Road, he missedbeing there. Meanwhile, Ibs joined Clevedon Town, for whom he has already played a few gamesthis season. His experience will be a big boost to the Seasiders, who are tracking a very young sidethese days in the Toolstation League & Ibs will no doubt slot in well as the club acclimatises in its newdivision. WE THEREFORE THANK BOTH JAKE & IBS FOR ALL THEIR EFFORTS IN THEMAROON & SKY BLUE & WE WISH THEM WELL FOR THE FUTURE!

MEANWHILE, KANE MANNINGS, a former Youth team keeper here at MUFC, re-joined the Clubfrom Clevedon Town & he was lined up to take over the No 1 shirt from CONOR THOMPSON, whoseshort spell with the Club ended recently. We also wish CONOR well for the future & we thank him forhis efforts in the Maroon & Sky; or even orange, in this instance!

HOWEVER, OUR LAST TWO MATCHES HAVE BOTH ENDED IN BAD DEFEATS to compoundwhat proved to be a very bad mid-September week for the Club, both on & off the pitch. Those fans &officials who saw our 3-0 defeat in the FA Cup at BROCKENHURST were hugely disappointed at ourgenerally poor performance against a struggling side from a lower level of football, as well as ourfailure to collect another £3k in FA prize money. Mind you, in the early minutes down there, wemissed 2 good chances & if we’d scored, who knows what might have happened in the end, butBrockenhurst took the lead in their first attack & we never recovered from that set-back. New signingCONNOR WALDON from Swindon Supermarine – welcome to MUFC, Connor – showed up well, butthis was a game we were, in the end, never destined to win & so our FA Cup dream is over foranother year. After the Brockenhurst game, keeper CONOR THOMPSON exited the Club withimmediate effect & chairman MIKE RICHARDSON expressed his own disappointment with the team’soverall performance via a rare message posted on the Club’s website at mufconline.co.uk. It was afairly brief message, but it was hard not to disagree with his view. PTOFIELD REVIEW -7

SEVERAL DAYS FURTHER ON & we ended up going down 4-1 away at today’s visitorsSHORTWOOD UNITED in another match to forget, as we also ended the game with just 9 men, withboth MATT GROVES & keeper KANE MANNINGS receiving red cards! I’m sure we’ve been in asimilar 9-man situation before, though I can’t recall when or where this happened – that’s one foranother day!** Having said that, we still managed to equalise at Shortwood, courtesy of SCOTTBRICE, but with ALEX KITE now between the sticks, Shortwood began to put him under a lot ofpressure & soon added another 3 goals. In situations like that, you just want the game to hurry up &end, because there’s not going to be any way back when you’re 4-1 down & 2 players short, and it’sall about damage limitations at that point. **(Bashley (A) – December’14 –And we won!- Ed).

(Those of you with long memories will no doubt remember the home game v Westbury United wayback on 6 February 1999 when we lost 2-1 at home to Westbury, who had 9 men for 70 minutes!!)

WE HAD NO GAME LAST SATURDAY, which was probably just as well in the end, as it would havegiven any injuries an extra day or two to clear up. Mind you, the Club did look into re-arranging anaway game by bringing forward one from the winter & I gather there were 2 or 3 possibilities, but inthe end, nothing was arranged & so we had a blank day. Presumably, the other clubs we had in mindeither didn’t want to play us, or they had enough injuries of their own to worry about as well.

WEDNESDAY’S TRIP TO LARKHALL ATHLETIC didn’t happen either, as they were involved in anFA Cup replay, so our trip to Plain Ham will be re-scheduled. The Boyz therefore haven’t played for 2weeks, so aside from any suspensions & (I assume) everyone as fit as they could possibly be, withthe exception of the long-term injuries to RYAN BATH & GERAINT BATER, today’s FA Trophy game& the next few league matches (at BANBURY next week, then home to WANTAGE & WIMBORNE)are pivotal matches in our season, so far, as we try to turn things around after the defeats atBrockenhurst & Shortwood. I think today is a must-win game because a decent run in the FA Trophyis paramount, both on the pitch & off it. We’ve not had much in the way of FA Cup or Trophy runs inrecent years & we blew our chances of further FA Cup progress this season at Brockenhurst, so wehave to turn to the FA Trophy now if we want a decent run in a tournament of national importance.

OUR MOST MEMORABLE FA TROPHY RUN SO FAR dates right back to 2001-2002 when weedged past Worcester City, Dorchester Town & Tooting & Mitcham, before being drawn at home toConference side STALYBRIDGE CELTIC in the 4th Qualifying Round. I must admit, I was veryconfident at the time that we’d beat them! We scored goals for fun back then, were chasingpromotion & Stalybridge were bottom of the Conference with only 1 win all season. The originalSaturday fixture was postponed because of bad weather, so was re-staged on a midweek date, whichobviously meant a difficult journey for the Greater Manchester club to undertake – a long, midweektrip to Bristol would hardly be an ideal way to prepare for a game against a lower level side. So whathappened? We lost 1-0! So much for my confidence about us winning then! Once Stalybridge hadtaken the lead, they closed ranks & kept us out with some ease. They may well have been bottom ofthe Conference, but they were still too good for us on the night! It simply showed that the gap betweenour division & the main Conference was huge back then & it still is, of course. But right now, all thatmatters is that we beat Shortwood today & makes some progress in this season’s FA Trophy.

FIELD REVIEW -8

Welcome once again to THE WORLD OF SOCCER, the column that brings you news stories fromaround the globe. Let’s begin today in SWEDEN with this June 2015 story about John Guidetti, aSwedish international currently with Spanish side Celta Vigo, but who can count Man City, Burnley,Stoke City & Celtic among his former clubs:

It’s an early summer evening in Stockholm. An 8-year-old boy is wandering home from a friend’shouse when he passes a man on the street next to the park in which there is a football pitch. He takesa few more strides, realises who the man is, then runs back to ask him if he wouldn’t mind kicking theball around for a while. “Sorry, I’m just on my way home to watch the Champions League final,” JohnGuidetti says. “But if you’re still awake after the match, we can play then.” The pair go their separateways to watch Ivan Rakitic, Luis Suárez & Neymar score as Barcelona beat Juventus. But the boyhas taken Guidetti’s words as a promise. He is so tired he has to stand up during the 2nd half in orderto stay awake, while his parents fret about his forthcoming disappointment. The referee blows hiswhistle at 11.30pm Swedish time & the boy immediately rushes out of the house & over to the footballpitch……where Guidetti is waiting! And while Barça fans go mad on the Ramblas, the Sweden striker,a star-struck 8-year-old and some other friends have a kick-about at the park. When Guidetti waslater asked about that night, he just said: “It costs so little and gives so much.”

Stories like that mean it’s not hard to see why Sweden fans love Guidetti. At the European Under-21Championships, he was their talisman & chief cheerleader – if the ball goes out for a corner and thevolume drops, there’s one man you can put your money on wheeling his arms around & cajoling theSweden fans into action. And plenty of young defenders at this tournament were pressured by hisbattering-ram style!

When Guidetti burst on to the scene as a 19-year-old with 20 goals in 23 Ere-Divisie games forRotterdam giants Feyenoord, it seemed only a matter of time before he was a 1st team regular atManchester City, but it never happened & his club career since simply hasn’t gone according to plan.Neither Stoke fans nor Celtic supporters will remember him with much fondness, but he clearlyrelishes wearing the yellow national shirt of Sweden.

Now, looking back at the bad old days of English football in the 70s & 80s – as far as hooliganism isconcerned anyway – I came across this story from 1983 when England fans went on the rampage inLUXEMBOURG. I’d forgotten the scenario, but it appears 20 England fans had been arrested inLuxembourg after a night of violence. The fans are being held for drunkenness, fighting & stealingafter England were knocked out of the Euros in spite of beating Luxembourg. Denmark's victory overGreece earlier on Wednesday meant England finished 2nd in their group & didn’t qualify for the 1984finals. The fans were not placated by a 4-0 win over Luxembourg & trouble started inside the stadiumduring which two police officers were badly hurt. Afterwards, England fans raced through the citycentre overturning cars & smashing shop windows. About 500 police & 150 soldiers were on duty inan attempt to head off trouble. They had hoped to prevent a repeat of violent disturbances in 1977when England fans also ran riot in the small principality.

On the Tuesday, about 20 Englishmen beat up a railway employee in Belgium & 4 police officersneeded hospital treatment after fighting broke out among drunken fans who got off a ferry in Ostend.During the match itself, riot police from neighbouring West Germany were also drafted in to help theover-stretched Luxembourg forces. Weapons seized included axes (!) & aerosol cans filled with teargas. Many England fans spent the night on the streets because local hotels refused to take them in!Finally, after the game, they were herded to the railway station by the police, where a train, broughtforward by 5 hours, was waiting to take them to the ferry port in Ostend.

A total of 50 England fans were arrested - 13 received prison sentences of up to 4 months & fines ofup to £250. Luxembourg's Minister of Sport at the time said the country would never again host amatch involving England. Fully understandable! Have we ever been back there since though?

In the meantime, there’ll be more news from THE WORLD OF SOCCER again soon.

“PREMIER LEAGUE CLUBS ARE PAYING THREE TIMES WHAT THEY USED TO. BUT THEGOOD THING IS THAT THE MONEY IS BEING PLOUGHED BACK INTO THE BUNDESLIGA.THAT HELPS MAKE THE GERMAN NATIONAL TEAM STRONGER BECAUSE IN THE LAST FEWYEARS, £100M HAS BEEN PUT BACK INTO GERMAN YOUTH DEVELOPMENT. YOUNGENGLISH PLAYERS DON’T GET MUCH CHANCE OR MINUTES ON THE PITCH AND THAT ISWHY ENGLAND HASN’T SET THE WORLD ALIGHT”. The words of Germany coach Joachim Low,as quoted in The Sun on 4 September 2015, as he “mocked” the England national team by claimingthat the Premier League is killing it.

Come on, Herr Low, have you only just worked that one out?? We fans have known this for YEARS!80% or more of PL players are foreign, so Uncle Roy (or whoever follows him in the job) hasn’t gotmany players to work with. The transfer fees that our clubs pay – like £56m for Kevin De Bruyne –are both ridiculous & obscene, and most of these £20m+ players are never worth it. And how much ofthat big money gets ploughed back into the grass roots game to bring on new stars? Not much.England then regularly stutter their way through qualifying tournaments, without ever reallyimpressing anyone, before we then do our customary act of “failing to turn up” at the tournamentfinals themselves. It’s what happens, we’re used to it & it will probably happen in France in 2016 too.

“A WELLNESS FOUGHT POINT AGAINST A TYPICAL SOUTHERN LEAGUE SIDE, BIGDEFENDERS, HARD MEN IN MIDFIELD AND SKILLFUL PLAYERS UP FRONT. MANGOTSFIELD,WITH THE EX-BRISTOL ROVERS PLAYERS, GOT RIGHT INTO CITY’S FACES WHICHRESULTED IN US UNABLE TO PLAY OUR NORMAL GAME. FULL MARKS TO OUR TEAMTODAY WHO GREW UP TODAY AND FOUGHT LIKE MAD. 2-2 WAS A FAIR RESULT, BUT CITY,THIS IS WHAT IT’S LIKE”. The words of a Winchester City fan, as spotted on their unofficial fans’forum on 6 September 2015, as he talked about their 2-2 draw here the day before.

And here are the words of an irate Dave S on OUR unofficial forum in response, for the benefit ofsome of our supporters who may not do fans’ forums:

“WHAT A LOAD OF OLD COBBLERS! This, from a fan whose side had SIX players booked (whatwas our count, one or two?) and one of their SIX, the keeper, should have been shown a straight redfor the most cynical challenge I've seen on a player for ages. The referee totally bottled that one. Ifthe keeper had done that in the street, he'd have been arrested. Heck, wait till this lot meetsBurnham; then they'll know they've REALLY been in a game against hard men!”

“HE – LAWRIE McMENEMY – IS VERY SUPPORTIVE OF GRASS ROOTS FOOTBALL & WASVERY KEEN WHEN I ASKED HIM TO COME. HE KNEW WHAT LEAGUE MANGOTSFIELD WEREIN AND WHAT LEAGUE WE ARE IN AND WAS WELL UP ON THE TEAMSOLENT/BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES KIT SAGA AND JOKED ABOUT MAKING SURE THERE ARENO COLOUR CLASHES”. – The words of Brockenhurst boss Pat McManus, as quoted in theSouthern Daily Echo on 10 September 2015, as he talked about Southampton’s 1976 FA Cup-winning boss Lawrie McMenemy being guest of honour at our Cup tie v Brockenhurst in Hampshire.

This was a great story to read prior to the Big Game – one of the nicest blokes in football from theGood (and Bad!) Old Days of the Great Game & it’s amazing to read that he knew a bit about bothour clubs as well! Can you imagine what some other famous managers would say if they were askedabout Brockenhurst & MUFC? Their replies would go something like this:

Arsene Wenger – “I did not see the incident”. (His standard reply to all questions)Jose Mourinho – “I’m not answering the question”.Gordon Strachan – “Och aye,!”£$%^&*()_+?><@_)(*&^%$£” the Noo”. In other words, Scottish talk!Sean O’Driscoll – “Stupid question, stupid question & I never look at the league tables”.Harry Redknapp – “They’re both fantastic teams, they’ve got some fantastic players & play somefantastic football & score fantastic goals. I think it will be a fantastic game”.Brian Clough – “We’ll talk about it for 20 minutes & then we’ll decide I was right”. (RIP Brian!)FIELD REVIEW -14

THE FA.COMThe following notice has been sent to the Premier League, Football League, NationalLeague, Isthmian league, Northern Premier League and Southern League clubs.

DISCRIMINATORY CHANTING

All clubs were advised in August 2014 of a change to FA Rule E21 affecting FA Rule E20 cases, whichare proven to be discriminatory in nature. You are reminded that, as a result of this rule change, if aclub’s supporters should commit discriminatory acts at a football match, and The FA issues a disciplinarycharge, the matter is one of strict liability should the alleged conduct be found to have occurred.

With 2014/15 being the first season since the rule change, The FA has carefully monitored any reportedincidents during 2014/15. This monitoring process has revealed that there were a small number ofreported instances of discriminatory conduct by supporters which in other circumstances may haveresulted in an E20 charge.

In particular, clubs should be aware that the discriminatory conduct complained of, tended to refer to thebehaviour of a relatively significant number of supporters which resulted in such chants and/or songsbeing audible to a large number of people. Discriminatory chanting referenced a number of the protectedcharacteristics, such as sex, disability and sexual orientation.

Following a general review of such cases, The FA has issued a number of formal warnings to the clubsconcerned. However, going forward, The FA wishes to make it explicit to all that clubs should beaware that from this coming season, reported acts of discriminatory conduct by a club’ssupporters, including the type of examples referred to above, are highly likely to lead to formaldisciplinary action under the FA Rule E20.

In light of the above, we strongly urge clubs to continue to be proactive in taking all necessary steps toeradicate such behaviour from our football stadia. Guidance on dealing with discriminatory chanting isavailable in “Crowd Management: The FA Good Practice Guide”, which has been circulated to clubs andis also available via the following link underneath the “Resources” section.

www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/more/stadium-safety.

As a guide to clubs, this is the following criteria that will be applied by The FA when dealing with the typeof cases set out below.

E20 cases (Discriminatory crowd matters)

FA Rule E20: (p.126 Handbook)

Each Affiliated Association, Competition and Club shall be responsible for ensuring:

That its directors, players, officials, employees, servants, representatives, spectators, and all personspurporting to be its supporters or followers, conduct themselves in an orderly fashion and refrain fromany one, or combination of, the following:Racist, violent, threatening, abusive, obscene or provocative behaviour, conduct or language, whilstattending at, or taking part in a Match in which it is involved, whether on its own ground or elsewhere.

The club made two new signings recently. Goalkeeper KANE MANNINGS, was a right midfielder andstarted playing in goal when his club side AEK-Boco’s regular custodian fell ill, and he did so well that hecontinued to progress in that position in the Hanham Minor League. He joinedBristol City Youth, as a keeper and had a trial at Stoke City. No offer wasforthcoming, but he pursued his career in the USA and has only just returnedfrom playing in California, where his college team won their league. 22 year oldKane joined Clevedon Town from Odd Down in January 2014 after spells atMangotsfield United Youth, where he won the Somerset Floodlit Youth Leaguetwice and the League Cup. He has also been at Bristol Rovers, WinterbourneUnited and has represented Bristol Schoolboys (as an outfield player), and hadtrials with England Schoolboys. He recently became a Goalkeeping Coach at the Matt Lewton Soccer School.Kane originally signed for the club as a back-up to recent signing CONORTHOMPSON, but the 20 year old, who signed from Cirencester Town, has nowleft the club.

CONNOR WALDON made his debut for us in the FA Cup defeat at Brockenhurst. Not the best of startsfor the striker who we signed from Swindon Supermarine, but he was unluckynot to have crowned his debut with a goal. His 3rd minute header clattered thecrossbar and he had several shots on target in the opening half - hour, when byand large, we were controlling the game.

He was released by Swindon Town in April 2015, after making 5 first teamappearances for them. During the last eighteen months, he has had loan spellsat Frome Town, Gloucester City (x2), Tamworth & Brackley Town.

His first spell at Supermarine was on loan, but he later signed for them on apermanent basis.
