A Note from Lisa
What a summer we have had — from the hot weather to the smoke. Our gratitude
and hearts go out to the fire fighters who work tirelessly to put out the fires, families
who have lost loved ones and homes, and all who were affected by the smoke. Even
though our colossal Garage Sale happened during some of the most hazardous
smoke days, it did not stop people from coming, and we are so happy they did!
Many Thanks Are in Order
This was our first two-day garage sale event for some time and our most successful
— thanks to the fantastic Garage Sale committee and the fabulous volunteers who
worked for months, sorting, boxing, carting, pricing and selling over two storage
containers of furniture, exercise equipment, household items, books, jewelry,
collectables, and more. Please know how grateful we are for the time, commitment
and dedication you showed during this event. It was a lot sorting, cleaning and
lifting. I know I am still recovering.
I heard chiropractors and massage therapists in Spokane received a huge increase in
calls after this event! Another huge shout out to everyone who donated the plethora
of items to support the sale. Your generosity helped to make it the success it was.
Thank you to everyone for donating to the Shoe Drive for the Mission Community
Church. They were overwhelmed by the generosity of our members. Thanks also to
all who donated to the Teal ladies ‘Back to School’ drive and tote bags for children.
I want to give a huge thank you to the board who have worked hard and donated
their time and helped financially to make the events a success and provide direction
as we work on our Strategic Plan. Finally, I want to share my gratitude and thanks to
our staff, Betty, Josh, Danny, Cornelia, Tyler, Jim, Kameron and Judy who work
tirelessly to ensure we provide the services, programs, activities and events that
benefit you. We are a small team with big hearts and a love for the Center.
Exciting Things in Our Future
Pop into the Health & Wellness Fair on September 29. We have more vendors than
last year, and they would love to meet you. We also have a new event, ‘Get Y our
Game On’ in October, our Veterans’ Appreciation Dinner in November and our
hugely successful ‘Breakfast with Santa’ in December. We would love to have you
attend, volunteer or even help us find sponsors. So c’mon down to the Center. We
have something for everyone. Tell us what you’d like and we will see if we can add
that to programs.
The Center is privileged to have a fund raiser on September 4 with Ugandan
diplomats and officials who are visiting Washington state for a Global Peace
Conference and stopping in Spokane to raise awareness of the need for food and
education programs in Uganda. There will be presentations, food, raffle prizes and
items made by tribal artisans from Uganda. It will be a great event, so mark your
calendars to stop by.
Aussie Slang: Fisho – Fish monger; Grouse – Terrific; Grog – Alcohol; Grundies –

Thursday, September 13 47th Annual Deutschesfest in Odessa Experience an authentic German tradition with the $49er Club
that has attractions for all ages—
authentic German food, city-block big
biergarten, live music, a parade, kids
zone, street vendors and helicopter
rides—just to name a few. Odessa’s
Deutschesfest is hosted by the descend-
ants of the German Russians who set-
tled west of Spokane at the beginning
of the 20th Century. These industrious immigrants trans-
formed the desolate Odessa area into one of the world’s rich-
est grain-growing areas. They have an appreciation for world-
ly delights – good food and drink, music and dancing. This
tradition been handed down through the generations to give
Odessa a very special ambiance, which abounds at Deutsch-
esfest. In German it’s called gemutlichkelt – the spirit of com-
radeship and good times.
Cost: $49 mem/$54 non mem. Includes transportation, snacks and sausages. Van leaves at 10 am and returns around 4 pm.

BACON BITS! or the Tales of Pr isc i l la
I joined a great group of travelers to
visit the Hutterite community west of Spokane. We toured and
visited with the friendly folks who live there. They fed us a
lunch of baked cabbage, fresh fruit and homemade bread
and donuts. Yum! I’m grateful that they did not include pork on
the menu. The Hutterite community was such an interesting
place. We toured the school house and church, kitchen where
they cook for 140 people, their work shop where they keep all
the tools for any project you could think of. We also stopped
by the dairy farm and garden.
It was quite an adventure. When we arrived, the van doors
would not open automatically. We were locked in just like pigs
in a blanket. Josh (pardon the pun) saved our bacon. He was
able to flip the exit switch and open the doors manually.
Another great tour with my friends at the Center! Please invite
me on any upcoming trip. I’m looking forward to my next
outing. And please keep feeding me. I really, really thank you
because I am still so hungry. Priscilla

Un-Cruise, a small, all-inclusive boutique line of ships goes where other ships can’t even
imagine. On this 7-day Sea of Cortez expedition you will be able to snorkel, hike, kayak,
swim, paddle or just take in the amazing scenery. Read an article below from a recent traveler.
An Un-cruise small ship adventure in the Sea of Cortez delivers bucket-list encounters with
creatures great and small. ~ By Dale Leatherman Special to the Star Tribune
Hopes of swimming with whale sharks had brought my friend and
me to La Paz, Mexico, and the world-famous wildlife sanctuary in the Sea of Cortez. As anxious
as we were to fulfill that dream, we anticipated other exciting “critter encounters” during our
week aboard the 42-cabin Safari Endeavour, one of the luxury vessels in the Un-Cruise
Adventures fleet. The ship had all the fun stuff we’d need: skiffs, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards,
wet suits and snorkeling gear. And we assumed — rightly, as it turned out — that our fellow
passengers would be as gung-ho as we are about wildlife, good food and drink, and the personal
attention that comes with a 2:1 guest-crew ratio.
Our guide yelled, “In the water, now!” and ten of us scurried to the swim platform, awkwardly
duck walking in our fins, holding masks and snorkels in place as we plunged into the dark ocean.
Restless from the previous day’s weather front, the sea rolled in great swells, lifting and
scattering us like bathtub toys. I quickly put my mask in the water, rotating to see beneath the
surface around me. With a jolt I realized I was staring down the throat of a gigantic whale shark.
Mouth open wide, she was feeding near the surface, filtering plankton through her gills. Slowly the 30- foot-long behemoth slid by
me, aware of my presence but unconcerned. Depart San Jose Del Cabo, March 2.
Starting at $3795 per person double occupancy as available. Airfare not included.
