Vitra ClassicsThough still dedicated to the theme “Vitra Classics”, the installation

on the third floor of the VitraHaus has just been redesigned and taken on a completely new look. With a ceiling height of seven meters,

it is the highest of the four levels and provides a sensational view into the floor below, thereby representing one of the most interesting

parts of the building from an architectural point of view.

Story boxesIn the new installation, every designer of the Vitra Classics is represented by one box.

The large-scale installation consists of three different elements dealing with the seven designers Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Alexander Girard, Isamu Noguchi, Verner Panon and Jean Prouvé, who mark Vitra’s beginnings as a furniture manufacturer and have played a key role in taking the company to where it stands today. Not only does the ensemble demonstrate how their works are still relevant in a modern-day context, but also reveals interesting details from the Vitra archives.

Nelson box George Nelson’s box toys with the iconic Coconut Chair, catching visitors’ attention.

Story BoxesWith their groundbreaking designs, Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Alexander Girard, Isamu Noguchi, Verner Panton and Jean Prouvé have laid the foundation for the Vitra Home Collection as we know it today. Seven different product installations in half-open boxes illustrate how these per-sonalities have contributed to industrial design and Vitra’s history. Each box features a biography as well as a quote of the respective designer.

Noguchi box Sculpture-like luminaires – set in scene in the box of the Japanese designer and sculptor.

Panton box Verner Panton and colours:

an inseparable connection, as illustrated by the Panton box.

03

Colourful family Visitors are greeted by Alexander Girard’s multicoloured company of Wooden Dolls, some joyful, others grim-looking.

Girard box Fabrics, patterns, colours, graphics and

accessories – a discovery tour of Girard’s work in the smallest possible space.

Further reading Those with time and leisure on their hands will discover more information in drawers and books.

Mirror, mirror The mirrors surrounding the stack of Prouvé’s designs give it a dramatic feel.

02

The centrepiece of the installation is a box overlooking the others, which offers insight into the lifework of Charles and Ray Eames. In addition to many pioneering furniture designs, their almost four- year-long collaboration produced various exhibitions, films, toys, graphic works, textile designs, the iconic Eames House and countless photographs.

Prouvé box The Prouvé box highlights the constructive nature of

Jean Prouvé’s work.

05

Eames box Charles and Ray Eames have laid the foundation for Vitra, which still remains unchanged today. A significant part of the newly furnished floor has there- fore been dedicated to the couple.

CollageFollowing the timeline is a furniture arrangement which shows how designs, which were developed many centuries ago, still find their place in today’s homes. Classics such as the Organic Chair by Charles Eames & Eero Saarinen are carefully combined with contemporary pieces such as Jasper Morrison’s Park Sofa and selected accessories to form an inviting collage.

Home Office Classics are perfectly suited

for adding a cosy touch to one’s home office.

01

Black and white Many Classics are also

available in black, creating a powerful contrast.

Lively collages Carefully composed arrangements with loving details and accessories are a source of inspiration for how Classics can be combined with contemporary pieces.

04

02

Feel at home The careful attention which has been given to detail in the arrangement allows visitors to better imagine these within their own four walls.

VitraHaus Situation Level 3 Timeline

A new timeline illustrating the history and evolution of a shop-fitting company in

Basel and Weil am Rhein to an international furniture manufacturer extends along

the wall leading to the south-facing window facade. Various text panels, photos,

films and products provide information about the key milestones from 1930,

when Prouvé designed the arm chair Cité for a competition for furnishing a hall

of residence in Nancy, up to Vitra’s relaunch of his collection in new colours with

Hella Jongerius in 2013.
