From the Principal Mr Greg Smith

It continues to be a great start to the 2013 school year, with students settled and classes clearly focused on teaching and learning. Many people have commented on the improved standard of uniform this year and we will con-tinue to reinforce this through assemblies and regular monitoring. We have introduced a range of meetings to start the school year off and inform parents about processes and sup-port at our school. I thank all parents who at-tended these meetings and I believe the great support that our staff gave to these events is indicative of the commitment that teachers at Banora Point High School have to their stu-dents. I would also like to thank our P&C mem-bers for the wonderful support that they gave in providing the barbeque at the Year 7 even-ing and the SRC, TAP and peer support stu-dents for assisting. I attended my first swimming carnival at Bano-ra Point yesterday. It reinforced several things, the first of which is the great school spirit that exists in our school. Many long established schools would be envious of the positive way in which our students respond to events like this. The second thing that was obvious is Banora Point High School students’ ability to have a lot of fun. Our school community in-cluding students and staff came dressed for the event, with whales, octopi, cavemen and a whole assortment of other outfits. The carnival was very well supported and it was a colourful, memorable day for everyone involved. Thanks to our organisers and particularly Mr Williams for such a wonderful event. Some of our 2013 programs have already be-gun. Last week we had a number of students involved in the Ecoman program. They have spent three days in Brisbane working with a variety of leaders in local commerce learning how businesses operate. The feedback was very positive, both from the students who at-tended and the staff who co-ordinated the program. We have recently launched the Girls Academy in the school. This program is a new initiative for Banora Point High and involves

assisting indigenous girls in successfully com-pleting High School. It is co-ordinated by the Titans. Our school has been selected for a pilot pro-gram called Healthy Schools. It will involve some clinical placements of final year allied health students from local universities within our school. They will come from backgrounds such as speech pathology, occupational thera-py, nursing, and exercise physiology. Students will work with our staff in providing assistance to some of our students. It will also give stu-dents at our school the opportunity to learn first-hand what these occupations involve. Per-mission will be sought from parents prior to the university students commencing. Allied health is one of the chief employment areas in our region and we are hoping that this initia-tive will lead to increased job prospects for stu-dents in the local area. We have two students who have been nomi-nated to be involved in the Lions Youth of the Year. I believe that this is the first time we have had entrants and I would like to wish Laura Kyle and Jackson Myer good luck in the first round of this national event. Our staff continues to implement the online roll marking. Once the final bugs have been sorted out, we will then link the system to SMS messaging. The messages will be sent to mo-bile phones of parents whose children have an unexplained absence on the day. It is planned that these will go out at 10.30am each day. We will continue trials with this prior to the full implementation and we really appreciate the support of parents with this. Our aim is to keep errors to a minimum, to reduce undue stress that can be caused by an incorrect message be-ing sent out.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to everybody! 2013 has cer-tainly been off to a very busy start with lots of activities underway and upcoming. I am very energised to begin my 2nd year as careers ad-viser with a full diary and lots of student par-ticipation. I would like to point your attention to all of the (listed below) available School-Based Traineeships / Apprenticeships vacant in our local area at the moment. These are a fantastic opportunity for students in Year 10 and 11 to begin their career path-way early and maximise their credentials for the HSC. Please get in contact with me urgent-ly if any of these vacancies are of interest to your child. I am available to discuss any of your children’s needs and goals for the future at any time. Please contact me either through email [email protected] or make an ap-pointment through the front office on 07)55131960. I look forward to hearing from you and meeting you in the near future. NEWS: CONGRATULATIONS to 4 of our year 12

students from 2012 on their graduation from the Titans Beyond To-morrow Program. I was very excited to attend their graduation at Skilled Park on the 19th January earlier this year with Preston Campbell handing our students their grad-uation certificates. Below picture is with 2 students Jessi Bryan (who is currently be-ginning a Mechanics Appenticeship) and Eden Jamieson (who is currently beginning

a diploma in Digital Imaging/Media) I look forward to working with the Titans staff, especially Ms Cathy Dickson, to a successful 2013 with our current participants. This is just one program of many to be set up for Banora Point High School. More details to come.

CONGRATULATIONS to

Ethan Grant (Year 11) who with determination and perseverance, has secured a School-Based Traineeship in Health Services. Ethan worked hard to obtain a work experience placement at the end of year 10 at the St Marthas HealthCare Facili-ty and was so impressive in his short time there, that he has now achieved this very exciting opportunity. Ethan will attend TAFE 1 day a week, and work 1 day a week, as well as accomplishing his HSC. I must rec-ognise the wonderful Lisa from Northern Rivers Group Training who helped make this happen for Ethan. We are so proud of you Ethan, you are well on your way to be-coming a paramedic in the future.

Their first workshop will be Friday 22nd February at Griffith University Gold Coast Campus.

CONGRATULATIONS to 5 of our amazing

young female indigenous students who par-ticipated in the Titans 4 Tomorrow Girls Academy launch in Brisbane last Friday 8th February. This is another new exciting pro-ject from the Titans team, which will en-hance the development of young indige-nous girls through both academic and sport-ing opportunites. Miss Spencer accompanied Tahlia Ible, Vanessa Smallwood, Elizabeth Green, Trinity Gannon and Ebony Whitlock for the launch, and the girls met Jessica Mauboy, Preston Campbell and Joel Parkin-son and students from other schools whilst participating in workshops designed to de-velop themselves personally. More work-shops will follow this term.

In 2012 some of our

senior students had the opportunity to partici-pate in “ECOMAN”; a wonderful business ori-entated workshop, where students worked together to run their own business, develop it from the ground up, and make significant profits. 5 students from year 10 had their turn in Week 2 of this Term. They went to Skilled Park and actively interacted in Ecoman for 2 days; Drew Jamieson, James McCann, Kaleb Green and Patricia Commins. A fantastic time was had, and congratulations to Drew and Kaleb who were part of the winning business. And once again thankyou to Miss Spencer for ac-companying the students and to the Titans Team, and Ms Cathy Dickson for assist-ing in providing our students with this unbelievable opportunity.

Tweed Valley Relay For Life

Have you been looking for a way to get out in the local area and show your support for community events? Or trying to find a way to lift moral and build team spirit?

Relay For Life events have been connecting individuals to communities in their fight against cancer and raising much needed funds for cancer research and support. Participants have been walking or running to inspire HOPE and prove that no-one is alone in the fight against cancer.

Have you been looking for a way to get out in the local area and show your support for community events? Or trying to find a way to lift moral and build team spirit?

WHAT IS RELAY FOR LIFE?

Relay For Life is an event, where teams take turns to walk, jog or run around a track to raise money for Cancer Council NSW’s vital research, prevention and support services. The aim is to have one member on the track at all times during the event.

With entertainment, activities and moving ceremonies through the day, it’s a great chance to come to-gether to fight cancer.

Your local event is the Tweed Valley Relay For Life held on Saturday March 23rd & Sunday March 24th at the Cudgen Leagues Club oval in Kingscliff.

GETTING INVOLVED IS EASY!

Register your team and create your online event page. A team can be 2 - 20 people made up of work-mates, friends or family.

Raise funds by asking people to sponsor you. We’ll send promotional posters, fundraising tips and raffle books to help you spread the word and get everyone excited.

Choose your challenge and work out how you want to Relay: Try to have someone from the team on the track at all times. If you think 18 hours is too much, why not do the 12 or 6 hour challenge?

Decide on a fundraising target and go and exceed it! Make a real difference to the lives of those affected by cancer. Work out how much your team wants to raise and tell everyone you know to sponsor you. Every bit counts!

EVENT BENEFITS:

You are contributing to the fight against cancer!

You generate interest and goodwill within the local community.

Relay For Life is a great team building exercise for family, friends, work colleagues, sport clubs, schools and community groups!
