From the Pastor’s Keyboard

Many a funny story begins with the premise…do you know the difference between _____ and _____? Most of the time whatever we guess is wrong. Here is an account of a man whom compares a stork and a midwife.

A Dutch missionary and Carmelite priest in Brazil, Carlos Mesters, distinguishes between two strategies for helping people: the stork and the midwife. The stork presents the child to the parents - as if the child came from outside the parents, as if there is no need for gestation and painful birth. The midwife helps in the painful birthing of the child who has been gestating in the mother's womb, and the experienced and skilled midwife knows when to intervene in the birth and when, in the best of circumstances, to stand back and let the birthing occur with little intervention. It is so simple to see that we must function as midwives, assisting people in bringing forth healing in their lives, stirring up the gift of God that is within them (2 Tim. 1:6). It is no simple matter to functionthis way. It is much easier to be a stork. --Defenseless Flower: A New Reading of the Bible (Maryknoll: Orbis, 1989), 133.

Let’s go back to the funny story premise. Do you know the difference between embers and flame? The answer is “someone to fan or circulate the life giving air”. Paul wrote to Timothy these encouraging words that are true for us today. II Timothy 1: 3I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. 6For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

In the past few weeks we have been blessed with the discovery of a great ministry in our own backyard…Gift of God Street Church (Pastor Ed). Your love offering of over $2000 will pay the bills for that ministry for a full month. Then Rev. Steve Heap shared with us the ministry happening in the jungles and cities of Brazil. As we respond to these challenging ministries the Holy Spirit is fanning into flame the gifts of God in our lives.

I say with Paul…I thank God for you!

- Marian Pollard, S.S. Director

This morning I was sitting in the backyard praying and thinking about what I was going to write for the newsletter this month.  When I came in and checked my email, I had a note from Carol Curcuro.  Now, I usually don't send emails that request you to forward it on to 10 people. But this one just really touched my heart.  I know that God has a plan for each one of us, but sometimes we question what is happening in our lives.  I don't know the name of the author but the credit goes to someone else.  It is not my thoughts or writing.  Hopefully, it speaks to someone else as it did to me.  Heart Surgery

Tomorrow morning," the surgeon began, "I'll open up your heart..." "You'll find Jesus there,” "the boy interrupted…the surgeon looked up, annoyed "I'll cut your heart open," he continued, “to see how much damage has been done...""but when you open up my heart, you'll find Jesus in there," said the boy. The surgeon looked to the parents, who sat quietly. "When I see how much damage has been done, I'll sew your heart and chest back up, and I'll plan what to do next.""But you'll find Jesus in my heart. The Bible says He lives there. The hymns all say He lives there. You'll find Him in my heart." The surgeon had had enough. "I'll tell you what I'll find in your heart. I'll find damaged muscle, low blood supply, and weakened vessels. And I'll find out if I can make you well." "You'll find Jesus there too. He lives there."The surgeon left. The surgeon sat in his office, recording his notes from the surgery, "....damaged aorta, damaged pulmonary vein, widespread muscle degeneration. No hope for transplant, no hope for cure. Therapy: painkillers and bed rest. Prognosis: here he paused, "death within one year."He stopped the recorder, but there was more to be said. "Why?" he asked aloud. "Why did You do this? You've put him here; You've put him in this pain; and You've cursed him to an early death. Why?"The Lord answered and said, "The boy, my lamb, was not meant for your flock for long, for he is a part of My flock, and will forever be. Here, in My flock, he will feel no pain, and will be comforted as you cannot imagine. His parents will one day join him here, and they will know peace, and My flock will continue to grow...”The surgeon's tears were hot, but his anger was hotter. "You created that boy, and You created that heart. He'll be dead in months. Why?"The Lord answered, "The boy, My lamb, shall return to My flock, for He has done his duty: I did not put My lamb with your flock to lose him, but to retrieve another lost lamb." The surgeon wept...

The surgeon sat beside the boy's bed; the boy's parents sat across from him. The boy awoke and whispered, "Did you cut open my heart?" "Yes," said the surgeon. "What did you find?" asked the boy. "I found Jesus there," said the surgeon.Author Unknown - Celebrate Jesus in 2010

Jesus said, "if you are ashamed of me, I will be ashamed of you before my Father."  "Yes, I do love God. He is my source of existence and Savior.  He keeps me functioning each and every day.

Without Him, I will be nothing. Without Him, I am nothing, but with Him I can do all things through Christ that Strengthens me."  (Phil 4:13).

I know that in Matthew 18:3 our Lord shares with us that we are to become like a child in order to enter His Kingdom.  I pray that I have the boldness that this little boy had in sharing with the doctor about his love for Jesus. The children are precious in His sight! Recently, we had two girls visit our church with their grandmother.  It was the first time one of the girls had ever been to church or Sunday School.  Both the grandmother and the granddaughter were so excited about being in church together on the Lord's Day.  The joy each one of them was feeling was contagious.  Oh my goodness, I pray I never take for granted the privilege of being in the Lord's house and learning about His love.  There are so many exciting and wonderful things happening in our church and the Sunday School program, please join us and experience this excitement and joy!  Sunday School begins at 10 a.m. and is dismissed at 10:45 a.m.  We would love to have you be a part of our program.  There are classes for ALL ages.  If you have any questions, please contact me.

Loving you through Jesus,Marian
