The Welcoming PartyThis has become an annual event and is hosted every year by Kim Wilkes and Muren Pickering. Their support of the Katie Gray Race is greatly appreciated. This year, the menu is pizza with salads and pies, all for $15 plus HST. And John Coull and the Long Reach Band will provide music for after-dinner dancing. The party is open to everyone, not just racers. This is a great opportunity for club members to meet the competitors, check out their boats, listen in on their strategy sessions, maybe learn something about sailing, enjoy a terrific dinner and a little dancing afterwards. For tickets, email Andy Thomson [email protected]).

Sailors’ BreakfastSue Jordan and her team will be serving a hot breakfast starting at 8 am on Saturday morning, September 1st. Fruit, yogurt and fresh croissants from L’Auberge de France will also be served. This is a great chance for members to have a great breakfast, watch the sailors get their boats ready for the race, listen in at the Skippers’ Meeting, join Jack Lander in blessing the fleet and listen to James Wessel as he pipes the fleet out of the harbour, and finally, if not too full of croissants, walk over to Meyers Pier to watch the start. It should be an amazing sight. All this for $10 plus HST. Again, tickets are available by e-mailing Andy.

The 50th Anniversary Katie Gray RaceThe race begins at 1000h on Saturday morning, September 1st. The race is open to everyone, not just club racers. Anyone who has a keelboat and can safely sail it to Picton is welcome to join in.

You can register for the race by going to the BQYC website (www.bqyc.ca) and clicking on the racing tab where you’ll find the registration form. This is a celebration, not just a race, and the more boats the better.

  • !Entertainment Round Up

On the afternoon of June 16th with sunny skies and fair winds, approximately thirty sail & power boats left the harbor to take part in Sail Past and salute our Commodore Steve Macklin on Wicked.

Prior to dinner Steve rounded up members and guests, a hundred in all, to have a group photo taken on the south lawn by the flag pole. After which everyone enjoyed a barbecue your own steak dinner. Thank you to all the volunteers who assisted with the dinner preparation and clean up.

Entertainment assisted with the dinner for the Shark regatta, and we had just over 100 people for dinner and the bar was hopping that night. Those sailors really like their rum!!

The July 1st celebration saw about 110 members and guests who braved the extremely hot and humid temperatures to join us for Canada festivities. Hats off to the barbecue teams, of Peter Aker, Dick Curtis, Hazel Lloyst and Kim Wilkes for a job well done on such a hot day. Beer Battered Blues, played a variety of Blues from dinner to dusk. The Fireworks were spectacular, definitely worth the wait. Thank you to our members who supplied a variety of delicious salads and mouth watering desserts. And thank you, to the set up and kitchen crews.

The Entertainment committee has completed the calendar of social events for the year and will be posted. We are always looking for Volunteers to assist with social events, it’s fun and a great way to meet new people. So if you have some spare time and would like to volunteer, or just get more details, drop me a line at [email protected]
