Justin-Siena's production of Once On This Island,an Oliver-award winning musical performed at theLincoln Theater, is a highly original Caribbeanadaptation of The Little Mermaid. Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues DanielBeauxhomme, a wealthy boy from the other side ofthe island, with whom she falls in love.Unbeknownst to Ti Moune, the pompous gods whopreside over the island make a bet with one anotherover which is stronger, love or death, the stakesbeing Ti Moune's life. When she pursues Daniel,who has returned to his people, Ti Moune isshunned because of her lowly status. Herdetermination and capacity to love, though, is notenough to win Daniel's heart, and Ti Moune paysthe ultimate price; but the gods turn Ti Moune intoa tree that grows so strong and so tall, it breaks thewall that separates the societies and ultimatelyunites them.
