The Purpose of Trinity United Methodist Church is to build a Christian community that meets

spiritual needs in a changing world.

The Vision of Trinity United Methodist Church is to humbly: be safe and nurturing; follow God’s will;

reach out to the community; and break down walls within and outside of the church.

It was difficult to choose the topic for the Advent sermon series this year. The world looks bleak; even the trees look stark and the sky gray. There is still much upheaval in the world, and in our own nation. People around us are hurting. The economy is still struggling, which translates into more people using the food bank, and more people eating at the Soup Kitchen every day. We know that more people will be coming to Trinity during the week this winter, begging for help to keep their homes warm. More people will be turning to us to help pay for rent, and for gas to drive to work. Even though there are service agencies to help with some of these needs, many of the people fall through cracks because the agencies often are able to help people just once each year. Yes, even life in Idaho Falls looks bleak for those who are struggling with finances, or relationships, or illness.

It was a difficult decision, but we will not be providing a Christmas giving tree this year. There are already many agencies in our community that provide toys and food for Christmas, and we felt that our efforts were duplicating other organized efforts. We decided that Trinity's resources could be used more effectively to help families throughout the winter, when there are not as many resources available to families. We will still provide a hat and mitten tree, because the children at Bush Elementary School need warm hats and mittens. The teachers hand out the hats and mittens to children throughout the winter who come to school without warm clothes.

It seems that what our community needs to hear about, and experience, this Advent is hope. The world was bleak the first Christmas, and God entered into the bleakness to bring hope and salvation. The light of Christ shone bright because the world was so dark. Hope shines brighter in bleakness. We need hope to get us through our difficulties. We need a message of hope to bring to those who are struggling. We need to search within ourselves to remember those times when life felt bleak for us, and then remember what gave us hope to get through those times. We need to open our eyes to the realities around us, and then reach out as the church, as God's people of hope, to share the light where it will shine the brightest.

That's the message this Advent. Yes, the world around us may look bleak. It may feel bleak. But Christ will enter even the darkest places. And we, the flawed people of God, with all of our cracked vessels from our own bleak times, will be able to let the light of Christ shine through those cracks. May God use us this Advent to bring hope to a world in need. Amen.

Prayer Concerns and more - Nov. 17, 2011 --Anderson-Castillo Family up date

Our family is working hard to adjust and cope with the drastic change in our lives since our son-in-law Giovanni Castillo was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma/Leukemia (ALL) in mid October. He is undergoing about 5-6 months of very aggressive treatment that we pray will lead to a cure. It is very difficult for him which of course makes it a challenge for all of us. He spends lots of time in a cancer center, hospital or here at home. The family is living with us at the time so we can help with their many needs especially the children, (ages 7, 4 and 7 months). Heather has to continue her job as a nurse at EIRMC. Many thanks to those friends and family who have helped us with monetary donations, cards, e-mails, prayers and their time to help us all as needed. Giovanni’s mother is now here from Nicaragua and is a great support for him. The medical bills are beginning to pile us as well! God had a plan when we put an addition on our home about 25 years ago for this area as we have helped many people who needed living space ever since. PLEASE keep us in your thought and prayers and keep sending card/e-mails and etc. as that is very important to the family.

“Once Upon a Starry Night” will be presented Saturday, December 24, at 5:00 P.M. in the sanctuary by our

children and youth. Stars, comets, Wise Men, and shepherds will reenact the story of the first Christmas and

sing terrific songs such as “I’m Not Getting on That Camel” and “One Sheep Short.” Please come to support

our hard-working actors and their parents.

Our Sunday School attendance has been great because the kids really want to be here. Thanks to our lead

teachers, Terri Robinson, Barb Brooks, Nancy Stewart, and Sherri Clemens. Also, thanks to their enthusiastic

assistants and subs. While the curriculum for K-5 will still be Rock Solid, Middle School youth will begin

“Grapple,” a series designed to let them put their faith into action. A reminder: we still need treats for the 3rd

and 4th Sundays of each month. If you can’t provide treats every month, then an occasional Sunday will also

work.

For many members of our community, winter is a time of great need. For families whose incomes don’t even

cover necessities, providing for their children’s Christmas is especially stressful. Please consider donating to

and helping with a Christmas basket program. INEL, Firefighters, St. Vincent de Paul, and Salvation Army

coordinate their efforts so there is no duplication.

Thank you to all who have stepped forward to serve at both the Food Bank and Soup Kitchen. We know it’s

hard work and we appreciate your efforts.

Together in Christ,

Kay

NIRDA (Nicaraguan Rural Development Agency) Another school year is coming to an end in the rural communities where this mission project works to give the students the oppor-tunity to finish high school. 14 students will be celebrating graduation soon. This is the 7th class of students that we have helped finish high school. NIRDA became an NGO in 2002. We have done several projects but primarily supported the teachers and stu-dents in the schools after being invited to do so. December and January are the vacation months for the school children but school will begin again in February 2012. We plan to continue to help these students and give them hope and motivation for their future. How can you HELP? 1. Continue to help us by recycling Aluminum of all kinds. A recycling center is at the church for aluminum cans and other small items. Other kinds of aluminum can be donated to NIRDA too. We can also pick up cans or other items if you contact us. 2. Volunteer to help our local committee as we raise money through various fund raising activities throughout the year (parking lot sale, dinners, auctions, monetary donations and more) 3. Invite Nirda committee volunteers to present a program about their work in rural Nicaragua. 4. Join a team that travels each year to Nicaragua to celebrate and teach the students and do various building projects as needed. 5. We are looking for someone who knows and follows e-bay that could help NIRDA sell donated items of value, with the proceeds going to NIRDA. Adult Sunday School

It is one of Western civilization’s best- known stories. For two thousand years it has been told and retold, preached and sung

about. We celebrate it every year with Christmas trees and lights, with gifts and cards, carols and hymns. And yet, its very

familiarity may keep us from fully grasping its riches.------- Adam Hamilton

Join us for our study of The Journey as Hamilton walks us through what really happened when God gave us his Son.

Classes will be held at 10:00 A.M. each Sunday in December.

Wesley Handbell Choir

Cordially Invites You to Its

ANNUAL Ring in the Season Handbell Concert

Matinee: December 3, 3:30 pm

Full Concert: December 4, 4:30 pm and 7:00 pm

Trinity United Methodist Church 237 N. Water St. [email protected] or call 522-7921.

Christmas music is truly a gift to the world! Its beauty and power erase boundaries and unite people and cultures. On December 3 and 4, this diverse cultural richness will be translated into the musical language of the handbells and offered to you as our Christmas gift. Trinity United Methodist Church will present its annual Christmas concert at the church.

“Musical Candy for Christmas,” includes traditional carols and classical forms as well as several unique selections. Ranging in mood from somber, peaceful, and meditative to joyful and boisterous, each tells its piece of the Christmas story. The quiet and spiritual quality of Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming, and Festive Peal set the mood for reflection and anticipation that precedes the Christmas mystery. The magic of December is found in Masters in this Hall and The Christmas Song, as well as in Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence. On This Day Earth Shall Ring is symbolic of the ever present anticipation of the incarnation of Christ felt not only on the first Christmas, but re-announced annually by joyous Angelic Choirs and Marching Kings. Rounding out the concert are the classic yearnings of Blue Christmas and our favorite winter images found in Sleigh Ride

Trinity United Methodist Church Wesley Handbells is the largest bell choir in southeast Idaho. Fourteen skilled ringers play a collection of over five octaves of handbells and hand chimes. A treat for both the ears and eyes, gleaming bronze bells flash through the air, ringing with expression and musicality. For our Christmas concert, we’ll be joined by flute, organ, and percussion.

Come and hear us ring in the season—our treat!

Olde Fashioned Christmas and Winter Festivals

and representations of other winter festivals.

The display opens to the public on Friday, December 9

and will remain through Wednesday, January 4.

Come often and enjoy the festive taste of the holidays.

A Little About the Soup Kitchen

In 1985, members of St Mark’s Episcopal Church founded Idaho Falls Soup Kitchen in their church basement. By the

early 1990’s, IFSK was incorporated as a non-profit with an active Board of Directors, and Dan and Marilyn Sanow

were leading the project. When Community Outreach Center, 301 S Boulevard, became available, IFSK moved into its

specially designed and spacious new location. Staffed completely by volunteer groups, it now serves meals from

12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. seven days a week. With a weak economy, IFSK business increased, so now an average of 135

meals per day are being provided at an average cost of $1.00 per meal.

While IFSK does receive USDA commodities, most of the food prepared there is donated by individuals, churches,

clubs, and other organizations. Canned and packaged goods are received from both the Boy Scout and USPS letter

carrier food drives. Monetary donations are equally important and are used to purchase foodstuffs, cleaning

supplies, and to repair and replace equipment.

Joyce Ayers of Trinity UMC is a board member of IFSK. Joyce and our Missions Committee organize volunteers to

cook and serve meals the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Mondays and on the 4th Sunday of each month. Recently, we’ve

established a collection box for food donations. Most needed items include cream soups, fruits, and vegetables.

Sierra Service Project 2012 The 2012 Youth Mission team will be attending the Sierra Service Project work camp

in Fort Hall, Idaho this summer at the end of July. Sierra Service Project (SSP) is a Christian non-profit organization providing life-changing experiences through acts of

service repairing homes in Native American and urban communities and serving in Central America. They invite junior high and high school age youth and young adults to experience the profound power of serving people who have a

culture and life experience different from their own. During their Domestic Summer Program each year, approximately 1,650 youth and 400 adult volunteers from 125

churches and over 50 paid summer staff live, worship and work together on seven different project sites. Together, their work results in over 130 safer, drier and more comfortable homes.

In 2010, 100 churches that participated were United Methodist. The other 25 churches were Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Lutheran and United Church of Christ. We welcome all denominations to participate in our programs. If

you would like to be a part of this exciting ministry, please contact Sara Jensen at 529-8892 or email at [email protected].

Volunteers Needed~~

We provide the volunteers needed the 4th Sunday and 1st, 3rd, and 5th Mondays of every month @ the soup kitchen.

This is a very worthy cause, and it takes a lot of hands to accomplish it. If you can volunteer, meet at the community

center on South Boulevard around 11:30am. Childcare will be provided during Sunday volunteer hours!
