(In the opening sequence we see the family setting up the living room/dining room in dim lighting upstage. Normal activity. Lights up downstage on SON and VIOLET as they are crossing. To seem as if they are walking from where they parked to the front door.)(speech is said as they cross)VIOLET: I really hope they like me.SON: Don't worry. They are going to love you. VIOLET: Are you positive? I don't want to make a bad impression the first time I meet them.SON: You have nothing to worry about (he kisses VIOLET on the forehead.)(They are at the door. They knock and then enter. The family inside rushes to finish tidying up. MOTHER goes to greet them.)MOTHER: You're finally here. It's so nice to finally meet you! Violet, right?VIOLET: Yes. So nice to meet you as well! You're house in gorgeous, it's so quiet and picturesque out here.MOTHER: Thank you very much. We like our privacy. Won't you sit down? Dinner is almost ready. (Sister is finishing up setting the table)SON: Oh, This is my sister. SISTER: (quietly. waves) Hello.VIOLET: (awkwardly waves back) (to SON) She mustn't say much. SON: Yeah. She's always been very quiet (FATHER carries in the dinner and sets it in the middle of the table. MOTHER gestures for everyone to take a seat.)MOTHER: This is my husband . (To the father) This is Violet, sweetie, the one he's been taking about. FATHER: It's very nice to meet you. MOTHER: Well what are we waiting for? Let's dig in!(The food begins to work its way around the table in silence. An awkwardness falls over the table and the MOTHER begins a conversation to try and break the awkwardness.)MOTHER: So how have your classes been going?SON: Pretty good. They've been pretty difficult, but I'm getting through it. Did you know Violet is a straight A student?MOTHER: No, I didn't. That's amazing Violet! What are you going to school for?VIOLET: Social and behavioral studies. MOTHER: Wow, that must be extremely difficult. VIOLET: It is, but it's something I'm very interested in so it's not that bad. FATHER: Are there many jobs available in that field?VIOLET: There are if you're good at what you do. (A silence falls over the table over again.) Oh, I forgot to wash my hand. Where's your bathroom at?SON: Oh yeah, It's down the hall to the left. (Violet nods and exits the room to the bathroom. They hear the bathroom door close and the dialog continues.)SON: So, what do you guys think of her?MOTHER: She's really sweet. It seems like she has a bright future ahead of her.
