Be Disciples. Make DisciplesPhillip Coffin

During my last sabbatical I spent a lot of time looking afresh at the subject of discipleship. This consisted of studying the relevant bible passages, reading many books, and attending a number of different churches. Some churches focus on the ABCs: Attendance, Buildings and Cash giving some information about a church, but not the full story. The church is the people, not a building!

Welcome to the March edition of our newsletter. The focus this month is on Discipleship.

Our Vision Statement:“To Grow through Living Out the Great Commandment and the Great Commission”

The Early ChurchHere the emphasis was on discipleship, which resulted in mission, the growth coming from conversion. This focus had previously been given by Jesus:Matthew 28:18-20: 18Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’In tge church today many make decisions for Jesus and get baptised. This is good, but only in a culture that moves from making decisions to making disciples, who then go on to make other disciples. Neil Cole: Ultimately, each church will be evaluated by only one thing - its disciples.

What is a Disciple? The term “disciple” in the New Testament is derived from the Greek word mathetes, which means a pupil (of a teacher) or an apprentice (to a master craftsman). In a biblical sense, a disciple is someone who gets their teaching from the example and life of Jesus.

How Does This Work Out in Practice?People are impacted by Jesus as they see his example lived out in the lives of others. Paul says:1 Corinthians 11:1: Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. In other words, we become more like Jesus, and as we do, other will follow our example. But it is a matter of...

Imitation Over Information. Many equate mere knowledge with spiritual maturity. However, it is much better to see this knowledge lived in our lives:James 1:22: Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. This then glorifies God and provides an environment that produces disciples who go on to make more disciple-making disciples.Jesus illustrates how this happens:Matthew 11:28-30: 28‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am

gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’Imagine a pair of oxen ploughing a field in long straight furrows. Oxen don’t do this automatically, they need to be taught. A young ox is paired with an older more experienced animal, sharing the same yoke. The same is true of Christian discipleship. We come to Jesus and take up his yoke (it is far less stressful to do so). He lead and guiding us in the right direction. In addition we walk alongside others, some are more spiritually mature who help us in our Christian walk through their example. Others are less mature spiritually and we help them in their Christian walk. This is the ‘apprenticeship’ method. Working along others to become disicples who go on to make disicples. This is a more biblical concept of discipleship. Paul explains to Timothy:1 Timothy 2:2: 2And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.Disicples are people who are learning from Jesus. This disicpleship is primarily caught, since the biblical model is one of imitation and apprenticeship. For this to happen we need to be more personally connected to Jesus as well as to one another. To be continued!
