Ole!Meet Three Hot Chihuahua’s

Graceful, alert and swift-moving with a saucy expression, Chihuahuas are highly intelligent and should not be underestimated even though they are small ill size. The Chihuahuas is the world’s smallest breed of dog.

Val Masters, of the Sacramento SPCA, is Community Services Director and Behavior specialist has adopted all three Chihuahuas shown in photo. Joey is white, 4 Ibs, and is three years old. He was a stray and when ready for adoption Val Masters adopted him. Joey is friendly to everyone and likes children. He is a confident little dog, very loving shows occasional Chihuahua attitude towards dogs he doesn’t know. He competes for a lot of attention. He is playful and a little independent. Jimmy is black, 51bs and 6 years old. He came into the shelter with about 50 other small breed puppies. The SPCA took them from a pet store; they were being neglected, underfed, etc. The store was taken to court and the SPCA was awarded custody of the little animals. Val Masters adopted him immediately, he was 10 weeks and barely over 1 Ib when he arrived! Now as he has matured, he has become selective about whom he likes, so he interacts with about only five people. Although Jimmy has this attitude toward most people, he is very charming with those whom he likes, and knows a lot of commands: sit, stay, down, wait, come, shake and high fives!

Jesse is gray and 5 Ibs and age 6. Val was browsing thorough Petfinder and saw on the site. Short N’ Sweet, a rescue group that has only small breeds available for adoption, Jesse and three other males were available.

There were a total of ten Chihuahuas raised together in a trailer by a woman. They were neglected when it came to food and health care. When the rescue arrived all the little dogs were covered in fleas and feces and

their water bowls had all been urinated in. They had to be bathed immediately. Because Jesse was so isolated is still very shy. He is very sweet, truly a “mama’s boy.” There is not a mean bone in his body. He

lives to be loved by Val, and she does all she can to give it to him! All Val Masters dogs go to work with her everyday.

Big Name Enters World of Energy Saving in Homes

Residential homeowners soon may be using Cisco networking technology to easily manager their energy consumption. Technology behemoth Cisco is partnering up with Duke Energy to further advancement of smart grid technologies. Cisco will be using its well known consumer brand Linksys to supply the hardware. The partnership is slated to support a $1 billion smart-grid infrastructure buildout. Cisco has reported that the consumer portion of the technology will largely be deploying its own smart-energy home hardware, which includes Linksys products and “homeplug” devices that transfer data via power lines. Mark Miller, director of business solutions for Cisco, recently told Business Week magazine that the company has been working on various energy management products -- some of them in the Linksys portfolio -- for the last 18 months. Duke services over 11 million people in its service area, mostly in the southeast United States, and is rolling out smart meters to more then 1.5 million of them. Duke’s smart grid will be built out over the next five years so it will take some time for the technology to be showing up at the local Best Buy or Fry’s if similar technology is picked up and deployed by local area utilities. The plan also still needs to pass various regulatory hurdles in some of those states, and Duke is also looking to get smart-grid stimulus money to partially fund the project.

Unscrambling the Mess

Too often clients have unrealistic expectations of an attorney’s ability to solve a problem it took the client a great deal of energy to create. Avoiding a problem is always easier than solving one, and once the ingredients of a mess have been stirred together by the parties and has become so complicated that one or both is compelled to hire a lawyer to help solve it, the solution has moved from simple and obvious to complex and uncertain. It is folly to think that the lawyer will have any easier time fixing it than the parties have. He or she just brings different arrows to the quiver. Remember: Your attorney didn’t set the table. He just has to clean up the mess. Michael Hanks

Rancho Cordova Furlough Days

City of Rancho Cordova recently approved the operating budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year, July 1, 2009- June 30, 2010. In order to balance the budget with the least impact on the community, it was decided that there would be seven furlough days. On those days, City Hall will be closed.

City Hall will be closed: Thursday, July 2nd; Friday, September 4th; Wednesday, November 25th; Wednesday, December 23rd; Thursday, December 31st; Friday, April 2nd; Friday, May 28th.

The furlough days are on days before or after a holiday so that it will be less of an impact on City customers.

Our society has been trained to desire a quick fix in healing. When we have a headache, we take a pill, and the headache is gone within 15 minutes. Now we want the same type of magic pill for everything from diets and depression to asthma and arthritis. But not everything in life can be solved quickly with a pill or other medicine. Why? Because most illnesses and diseases are a result of years of lifestyle and generations of genetics that can’t be cured in 15 minutes.

Graduating as high school valedictorian. A diploma from Princeton. Both impressive accomplishments. Yet neither will guarantee a rewarding career or fulfilling future — until the person applies what he or she learned. Absolutely anyone can make it — as long as a person uses his or her knowledge and skills to the best of his or her ability. You can make it.

Parents looking for fun, healthy, inexpensive and close to home activities for the kids this summer will love the 4th Annual Kaiser Permanente Kids Duathlon taking place this July as part of Eppie’s Great Race.

Kids completing the 2 mile run/walk and 5.75 mile bike ride along the American River bike trail will earn the title of Iron Kid Duathlete and enjoy a tremendous sense of accomplishment. Kids can also compete as teams with one kid doing the run, and the other the bike leg.

“It’s a great introduction to a multi-sport event, short

enough to be completed by most 6-7 year olds, yet challenging enough to engage a competitive teen athlete” said Tim Coughlin, director of a local non-profit supporting children’s fitness events. It’s a great bargain at $5 for kids and even includes a t-shirt, finisher ribbon, awards, and post race refreshments!”

There’s a family-friendly start time of 10:00 am and parents can accompany the younger kids on the course. The event takes place July 18th along the American River Parkway. For more information and to register, go to www.thegreatrace.org.

The Kid’s Duathlon at Eppie’s Great Race is a challenging and fun event for youth 17 years and younger. The 2 mile run and 5.75 mile bike ride offers two great events for children to compete in and get a feel for a multi-event competition.

Kids Become Iron Kid Duathletes in Great Summer Event

The “School-Age Spring” offers a 1/4 mile challenge for 5-6 year old participants in the Veggie Chase 5K and Kid’s Runs! Most kids choose to run this distance but some enjoy walking and running in intervals as well.

You may know the place: Built in 1912, the Sheepherder Inn has been something of an institution – from it’s early days as a house of ill-repute to a lodge-like hangout and steak house. However, you’d be doing yourself a disservice to miss its latest incarnation as a Midtown-worthy restaurant on a very unpretentious stretch of Folsom Blvd.

Under new ownership and management, the interior has been completely transformed, taking advantage of amenities like the original stonework fireplaces and vaulted ceilings, and updating everything else. Executive Chef Jessie Hernandez has created a menu with an appealing balance of imaginative dishes (such as the delightful Salmon and Bacon Wrapped Scallops) and comfort foods done right. Standouts in this category include the smoky clam chowder with bacon, hearty macaroni and cheese, and the surprisingly delicious sweet potato fries.

Our favorite appetizer was the Roasted Garlic Crostini, which included a generous portion of Cambezola cheese and delicate tomato chutney that had us guessing at the ingredients. Among the entrees we tried, the grilled Salmon was the clear winner, perfectly accompanied by chili garlic mashed potatoes and a fennel and citrus salad. From the dessert menu, the brownie and the shortcake were both delicious, but the bananas foster cheesecake was the best we’ve had outside of New York – and the most unique of the offerings. The wine menu was another nice surprise, offering a

good selection of reasonably priced wines by the glass and bottle.

Families will appreciate that both bathrooms have a changing table – not to mention the restaurant’s “kids eat free” special Monday-Wednesday (one free item from the kid’s menu per paid adult entrée). Additionally, there’s wine tasting every Wednesday from 5-7pm, and a daily happy hour from 2-6:30pm, offering specials on the already affordable food and drinks.

Business Opportunities in the Stimulus Package

Step 2: Get set, By: La Ronda Bowen

Q. Are there new business opportunities for me in the economic recovery funds?

R. YES, last month I encouraged you to register your business with the California Department of General Services and the Central Contracts Register (federal procurement). Small/micro businesses growth is critical to economic recovery. Now is not the time to shun government contracting. Instead, assess your strengths and your plans for long-term growth. Ask yourself which federal and state agencies are likely to benefit from your products/expertise. Review the organizational chart for California http://www.cold.ca.gov/Ca_State_Gov_Orgchart.pdf and the list of US departments and agencies http://www.usa.gov/Agencies.shtml if you are unsure. Research the relevant web pages and make a list of agencies that can use your company. For federal business opportunities, go to https://www.fbo.gov/ In the vendor section, select business opportunities. Type in the agency name and check these items, presolicitation, combined synopsis/solicitation, and sources sought. Click “go.” Select the solicitation you are interested in. Repeat until you have a good idea of the types of opportunities that are available. Next, get a tape recorder and practice what you will say when you call the procurement officer. You should be able to give a professional explanation of your business and the reason for your call (to introduce yourself) in about 30 seconds. Be clear and concise in describing your products and services and how they meet the buyers needs. We will finish this topic next month.

Attn. Business Owners/Entrepreneurs: E-mail your questions to me at [email protected]. I respond to everyone and answer the most common questions here. Helping you grow your

business to the size you desire is the reason for this column.

GM and Segway Join forces to reinvent urban transportationGeneral Motors and personal mobility pioneer Segway have revealed a two-wheel, two-seater prototype vehicle they’ve code named Project P.U.M.A (Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility). The self-balancing electric “car” is designed to transport two adults in a seated position, and can travel up to 25 and 35 miles (40 - 56 km) powered by large format lithium-ion batteries on as little as $0.60 worth of electricity.

The 300 lb (136 kg) zero-emissions vehicle has a top speed of 35 mph (56kph) and is powered by two electric wheel motors. The control system is based on the original Segway with dynamic balancing and drive-by-wire for acceleration, steering, and braking. It also features vehicle-to-vehicle communications, digital smart energy management and a dockable user interface that allows off-board connectivity.

Taser AXON Wearable Surveillance Kit – protect, serve and record

The Taser AXON is a tactical networkable computer worn by first responders that combines advanced audio and video recording capabilities. It consists of an audio-video earpiece imager, speaker and microphone that integrate into existing radio communications through a standard 3.5 mm headphone connection, providing two way communications in addition to full audio-video recording from a head camera the size and weight of a standard Bluetooth headset. The HeadCam can be worn over the ear like a standard Bluetooth headset courtesy of head brace that comes standard with the device, however the unit can also be mounted to glasses, helmets through the use of various accessories. It integrates with the radio earpiece and can capture color and low light infrared images. The Com Hub, which connects the HeadCam, radio and AXON Tactical Computer (ATC), contains the user controls – a standard push to talk button for radio controls and a single AXON event button that activates the system to start recording – is attached to the short of the officer while the ATC is stored away in dedicated pockets or on the belt or holster. The ATC is the brains of the system, running on the Linux Operating System the unit is responsible for video compression and storage, features a 10 hour rechargeable battery and 4.3-inch touchscreen display enabling playback and analysis of incident video. Taser says the new AXON system not only increases officer efficiency by reducing report documentation, it would also be a boon to officers facing false allegations and complaints as they will be able to call on irrefutable video evidence to refute such claims. Taser also believes that such evidence will prove invaluable in the courtroom by giving jurors the ability to see exactly what an officer saw.

The Internet Is Coming To Your Dashboard Cell phones and TVs converging with the Internet? That’s so 2008. The next big tech trend may be the marriage of computer technology to your car or truck. This spring, Ford will offer a dashboard computing system on its full-size pickups and E-series vans. This month, Hyundai is launching a system that warns motorists when they drift out of the lane they’re traveling in. Another manufacturer has developed pedestrian-detection software that works with heat-seeking cameras to alert drivers when someone is in their path. In March, Ford will release a fully functional, dashboard computer — complete with keyboard — geared to contractors and other business folks who want to access the Web, review documents and log inventory while on the go. In the spring, AT&T will launch an in-car entertainment service with 22 satellite TV channels.

“At the end of the day, there are four things about people that drive our economy. How many people there are, what age they are, what they are buying, and where they live or are moving.”

— Harry S. Dent, Jr.: Economist, money manager, and author

With all of the talk about the economy, it’s easy to forget that the economy isn’t a series of numbers and polls. Our economy isn’t even Wall Street. Our economy is us. You, me, your neighbors, your colleagues. And our lives don’t exist in a vacuum — they are ever-changing, and yes, even predictable. But only a handful of people have predicted correctly. Harry Dent is one of them.

What If You Build It……And They Don’t Come?

Build it and they’ll come…that’s what common wisdom says. Build a great product, and the world will beat a path to your door.

Many folks have an idea for a great product. Some will go ahead and build that winning product. They’ll spend countless hours, days, weeks…even years…getting the product “just right”. If only it had this feature – then it will be perfect. And everyone will buy it.

When the product is finally complete, after huge amounts of sweat and tears have been invested, the entrepreneur rolls it out for the world to salivate over…

And what often happens? Nothing! Just silence…and the sound of crickets…

Nobody cares…because something is wrong. Maybe it’s the product itself. Maybe it’s the way it’s packaged. Maybe it’s the marketing message. But something is definitely not resonating with the market.

And the torturous thing is that the entrepreneur doesn’t know which! Why? Because he or she built the product in isolation!

When developing a new product, the biggest mistake entrepreneurs make is they develop it completely in their own little world! They are obsessed with making a perfect product…when they really should be making a halfway decent product, tossing it out to the marketplace, and seeing what works.

It’s the old Italian school of product development – cook up a pot of spaghetti, toss it against the wall, and see what sticks! Do this early and often in your product development efforts!

Moral of the story? Perfection is your enemy…get people using your product as soon as you can! Until you’ve got people getting some value – any value – out of what you built, you haven’t yet built anything you can yet hang your hat on!

Tech AddictionI have to admit, I am technology crazy. Pure

and simple, no matter which way you slice it or how many clichéd mantra’s I add to this sentence, nothing changes how often I am online.

In the last week I have been on an internet diet; I have been on a trip and haven’t had access to the internet. The lack of internet really highlighted how truly dependent I am.

I brought my I-touch with me for the road. As one of my most beloved gadgets, it can tap into wireless internet. Every time I had internet access, I instinctively checked my email and Facebook.

During the school year I am online from about 8 p.m. until when I go to bed. As the course load increased from freshman to sophomore year, the internet has decreased productivity.

Throughout the afternoon and night I check and update my Twitter, Facebook, and blog on Tumblr while simultaneously keeping my email open; I can’t stop. Many of my friends use G-talk allowing them to be able to converse with me any time my Gmail (Google Mail) is open.

This internet addiction is a vice of the new generation. A growing number of us “overuse” technology. I don’t quite know how I came to have the internet addiction but I do agree with those who say that this much use is bad.

I have tried to limit myself and be more productive by not turning on my computer until my homework is done. The problem is that much school related content is now run through the internet. All my club emails, outside organization correspondence, and even my grades come through the internet.

Even though the internet is a distraction it is also a valuable resource. I can ask my friends for help, Google a question, and check my homework assignments. Are you as addicted as I am?

Digital TV is Now Here

In June a new era began. In life everything must come to an end, and that applies to the world of analog TV. During the middle of June the federal FTC required broadcast studios to make a switch so that all TV signals will be broadcast only in digital form. For everybody using TV’s connected to cable or satellite dishes the switch was more or less invisible. Anybody using an antenna to view TV will now have to have a digital TV, or else use a convertor box.

Broadcasters say digital television will allow for higher-quality video and audio on television, a greater number of broadcast channels and more possibilities for transmission of data or programs to mobile devices like iPhones, and Blackberry’s.

Crepes with Serrano Ham, Brie and Cantaloupe Prep Time: 30 minutes or less | Cook Time: 30 minutes or less | Serves: 10Ingredients: 2 large eggs 3/4 cup milk 1/2 cup water 1 cup flour 3 tablespoons melted butter 1/4 tsp salt Filling: Thinly sliced Serrano ham (you could also use prosciutto) thinly sliced cantaloupe cut up brie. Whirr all this up in a blender, pulsing for about 10-15 seconds until combined. Refrigerate and let rest for one hour. This batter makes about 20 or so small 7 inch crepes. Step 1: Put a little butter in a small nonstick skillet on medium heat. When warm, ladle about 1 oz of batter into the pan, swirling around (note that the first one always comes out a little funny, so make it and eat it, or toss it). When it’s ready to flip (usually about 30-60 seconds), it will be dry on top and crinkly around the edges. Use a rubber spatula to peek if necessary, when it gets close to being ready to flip it will release from the pan. Step 2: When done, fold and serve.

Oreo Truffles - Oreo Balls - Oreo Truffle Cookies Prep Time: 30 minutes or less | Cook Time: 30 minutes or less | Serves: 10Ingredients:

I’m a stay at home mom. That always cracks me up: “stay at home mom.” As if I don’t have loads of laundry to do, three kids to entertain, not to mention educate, meals to prepare, and I can just kick my feet up all day and eat bon bons. Well, after making this Oreo Truffle / Oreo Balls / Bon-Bon recipe, I might just have to take some time to kick back and relax! Here’s how to make your own Oreo truffles: 1 lb. Oreo sandwich cookies 8 oz. cream cheese Chocolate (I used about 3 squares of the Baker’s Chocolate) Sprinkles (optional)

Step 1: Put your Oreo cookies in a blender. Step 2: and blend it until it resembles sand. Step 3: Pour the “pulverized” Oreo cookies into mixing bowl and add cream cheese. Step 4: Mix those pulverized Oreo cookies and cream cheese together until it resembles mud. Step 5: Chill the Oreo cookie and cream cheese batter in the fridge for about 30 minutes (or until a little firm) and then roll into small balls. Step 6: Melt the chocolate in a microwave or Ban-Marie until completely melted. Step 7: Dip the Oreo balls into chocolate. I used a toddler spoon to help the process.Step 8: Transfer the Oreo truffles onto waxed paper and decorate with sprinkles, sugar, chopped nuts, or contrasting chocolate - the possibilities are really endless! Step 9: Store these in the fridge if you don’t devour them right away.

Hot Flash By Cindy Sample

What is it about shopping that produces that exhilarating burst of endorphins? The minute I arrive at any mall, my spirits soar higher than the escalators that will take me to new heights searching for that ultimate treasure: clearance items. Men may question our biological need to shop. Surely cave women didn’t have the opportunity to experience this modern day phenomenon. I submit that our early ancestors were responsible for the thrill we feel when we discover that the dress we noticed three months ago is now on the 60% off rack (75% with coupon.) Prehistoric women didn’t sit around in caves stirring mammoth stew. They foraged for the best supplies they could locate. Just like we do. With the economy in its current state, full price is no longer an option. So I clip coupons and forage through sales racks, searching for bargains. When I discover a designer dress for ten dollars at the local thrift store, it’s as exciting as finding buried treasure. Shopping also helps you acquire mathematical skills. My daughter learned how to calculate twenty five percent off almost before she

learned how to walk. Men have it so easy these days. No more running through forests, massive clubs in hand, trying to keep their women happy. Today wives bring home the goods. Do you think cave women were thrilled when their cave hubbies brought home a sabre-toothed tiger skin? Nope. Not when panthers were all the rage. Every self respecting cave woman knew only black fur was truly slimming.

It can be tough out there in today’s recessionary jungle. But thanks to our forebears we have the tactical skills to sniff out bargains and survive. And maybe have a little fun in the process.

Counting CardsThe Smart Way to Invest in Real Estate

Imagine yourself sitting at a blackjack table in Vegas. You’ve got a king and a nine. Do you hit?Why not?Would your decision change if you knew that the draw card was a two?

Real card counting doesn’t actually let you know exactly which card is coming next. But it does tell you the probabilities of the draw card being a good card or a bad card. If the probabilities favor the good card strongly enough, then you hit. Otherwise you stay.

The same analogy applies to real estate investing. The more information you have, the safer your decisions can be. Could we ever remove all the risk? Certainly not. Even in the contrived blackjack example above, you could still lose to a dealer with 21. But, in general, the more information you have, the better off you will be.

There’s a wealth of information available to real estate investors. Some of it is useful, some a waste of time. Some of it you can get for free. Other information costs you dearly. Some is public information that’s easy for anybody to find. Some information is private and will take a concerted effort to pull together. So how do we wade through all this information and pull out what we need? How do we know which cards to count and which we can safely ignore? Come to the NORCALREIA meeting on July 16th to learn some proven strategies for gathering and absorbing new information. Here’s some of what we’ll cover:

Topics (sales, foreclosures, unemployment, lending, emigration, rental rates, •government intervention, etc)Sources (people, pay services, news outlets, websites, books, automated feeds, •etc)Evaluation (timing, scope, bias, conjecture, etc)•Verifying (finding original source, corroborating sources, conflicting sources)•Integration (bigger picture, local impact, actionable)•Information overload (filtering, absorption, structured memories)•

We’ll be using current news reports, websites and data streams as our examples. So we’ll basically be doing a market report while we learn the strategies. At the end we’ll have a practice session where those who care to will have the chance to apply what they’ve learned.

Just like the professional gambler watches and remembers the cards that go by in order to increase his odds, today’s real estate investor needs to be watching the economy and real estate market closely. Government and economic forces are exerting pressure on the Sacramento real estate market. Understanding those forces can help you stay out of the pinch spots. Come learn some information handling skills that could help you learn how to do your own card counting.About our speaker: John Johnson retired from the computer industry in early 2008, after eighteen years as a software engineer. During his career he designed and wrote code for more than a dozen large scale software systems. Some of the better known projects that he’s contributed to are the Word Perfect Office Suite, the Netscape Navigator web browser, and Google Earth.

While designing and implementing large scale software systems, John mastered the skills necessary to gather, interpret, and organize large volumes of data. He’s now applying those same skills towards a new career in real estate.

John is an experienced teacher and lecturer. He’s taught numerous classes and lectured to groups of various sizes. He brings an energy and excitement to his presentations that helps keep the audience engaged and learning.

AT&T has re-opened a new, expanded retail store in Citrus Heights, featuring AT&T’s new interactive design concept to make shopping, learning and buying fun and easy for consumers.

The much larger Citrus Heights store re-opened in what had been an abandoned building, transforming what some called a community eyesore into a technology showcase featuring the latest in telecommunications and entertainment.

“Nothing compares to the experience our customers get from test-driving all

of AT&T’s technology in one convenient location,” said Karen Stoffel, director of sales for AT&T Mobility. ”We are focused on revolutionizing our customers’ in-store experience.”

The store, located at 5550 Sunrise Boulevard Suite 100, has tripled in size to 4,000 square feet. AT&T has added staff and now has 24 store employees educating and serving customers. In addition, AT&T added a Device Support Center.

“We’re very pleased that AT&T continues to invest in Citrus Heights and

bring more jobs into the community,” said County Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan. “This AT&T store will play a vital role in helping keep our community connected with the latest communications technologies.”

The store offers a comprehensive portfolio of products and services, including AT&T U-verse TV, ranked “Highest in Customer Satisfaction in the West Region,” according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Residential Television Service Provider Satisfaction Study.

Customers can test AT&T High Speed Internet, AT&T’s music offerings, Bluetooth headphones, Smartphones and the popular low cost Quick Messaging Devices with full QWERTY keyboards designed for fast, efficient text

Today, California is the most populous state in the Union. But, a mere 150 years ago it had very few non-indigenous folks. It was a sparsely populated agricultural province of Mexico (Spain), and few Americans ventured here. On the cold frosty morning of January 24, 1848 all that changed. In the tailrace of a sawmill on the American River, a tiny, pea-sized gold nugget was discovered. John Marshall, foreman of the construction crew building the mill, was the one who found it. A few days later he took it to his boss, John Sutter, at his ranch headquarters called New Helvetia (today’s Sacramento). That gold nugget changed California’s

history, American history, and world history. The floodgates opened, and tens of thousands of wannabe gold seekers descended on the gold fields. In 1850, “The Golden State”, California, was admitted to the Union, and it has never looked back. From the western Sierra Nevada Mountains the miners spread out in search of more gold, silver, and other marketable minerals. Loggers, farmers, railroad builders and other exploiters arrived, and followed them, building towns and small communities all over the state. Thousands of these towns or would-be towns died, but many grew and thrived, some turning into teeming cities. On a hill overlooking Coloma stands the James Marshall Monument where the

discoverer of gold lies busied. His statue points to the gold discovery site on the river below. After Marshall died at Kelsey in 1885, miners brought him over Mt. Murphy, packed in ice, for a funeral wake in Coloma, then buried him close to his former cabin. Courtesy Dolores Steele

Shayla Bowman’s Story...Shayla is a proud graduate of St. John’s Shelter Program for Women and Children

Hi, my name is Shayla Bowman. I am originally from Oakland, CA., and I am 20 years old. My addiction to marijuana started at the age of 12, and my life soon spun out of control. At the age of 13, I met my kids’ father, who was 29 years old. I ran away from my mother, and I began to sell drugs while continuing to smoke marijuana. By the age of 17, I was a mother of two children. I have a 4-year old daughter name Laray’ja and a 3-year old son name Ray’jon. My life became unmanageable; guns, drugs, and domestic violence,

but this was only the beginning of my downward spiral. In 2007, CPS removed my children from my custody. I thought my life was over. Any shred of hope I had was gone. I entered and completed a 90-day residential program, then a 90-day outpatient program. I then completed a 10-week Parenting class, a 15-week Domestic Violence class, a 15-week Anger Management class, 26 weeks of counseling, and 180 days of Drug court. The whole time, I was testing clean of drugs.

I came to St. John’s in June of 2008. My life changed entirely when I became a resident. I love St. John’s for the structure, the chores, and the staff. Once I got to St. John’s, my kids were allowed to have overnight visits with me. With their support, I learned how to be a parent again and to have respect for myself. Wanda, my case manager, taught me how to humble myself, have patience and how to deal with my anger in an appropriate manner. She is very inspirational and is my role model. While at St. John’s, I got my kids back; I got housing; and I completed high school. I am currently enrolled in Medical Assistant School-- I am so excited to be wearing scrubs! I return to St. John’s on a weekly basis to participate in their onsite NA Meeting. I love the new me. I’m a mother and a friend. I am a young woman who has goals, who will achieve them as long I stay focused.

About St. John’s St. John’s (www.stjohnsshelter.org) is the only Shelter Program in Sacramento County focused exclusively on homeless women with children. The families we serve are homeless... they are not helpless. St. John’s is designed to support these families in advancing from a point of crisis towards a position of self-sufficiency. Our goal is that every family returns to our community as productive and empowered contributors, versus a continued drain on the community’s increasingly scarce resources.

The number of homeless women with children in Sacramento County is rising at an alarming rate. At St. John’s, we are consistently housing 12% more than our 100 available beds. What’s even more alarming:

• in 2007, we turned away an average of 25 women and children each day• in 2008, we turned away an average of 80 women and children each day• in 2009, we are turning away an average of 280 women and children daily… a staggering 200+% jump St. John’s needs your help to make all of this happen. We are in need of household items; we are in need of volunteers; and we are in need of funding. If you are able to assist us, please contact Twyla Teitzel at [email protected] or at 916-453-1482.
