One Continent Many Stories: African Literature and Global Creativity
[A Workshop on Contemporary African Literature]

Prior to Wole Soyinka centenary Lecture at SOAS, we would like to offer a reflection through a seminar/workshop on Contemporary African Literature to coincide with the publication of two major works on Africa: All the Good Things Around Us- An Anthology of African Short Stories and May Their Shadows Never Shrink- Wole Soyinka and the Oxford Professorship of Poetry.
The workshop facilitators will be Ivor Agyeman-Duah (Lumina Foundation) and Afrikult.
The workshop/seminar will be exploring the following themes:
• Mapping African Literature- How different is the present from the immediate past- the issues and themes that concern the working writers of today: A House Divided 1940s-60s; Finding Ourselves- 1975-89; Where is Home ? - 2010- present.
• All the Good Things Around Us- An Anthology of African Short Stories- Bringing multiple voices in Africa’s creations- a Close Textual Analysis of this latest anthology.
• The Economics of the Literary Arts- How the main stream economy affects literary productivity.• Writer’s festivals and awards as sources of productivity.• The practice of writing.
Ivor Agyeman-Duah is Development Policy Advisor to The Lumina Foundation which administers the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa based in Lagos. A Literary Editor, jurist, anthologist and essayist, his recent works include his editorship of, All the Good Things Around Us - An Anthology of African Short Stories, The Good Ones - Contemporary Short Stories from Africa and the non-fiction, May Their Shadows Never Shrink - Wole Soyinka and the Oxford Professorship of Poetry. He was part of the BBC television production, Into Africa and the PBS, Wonders of the African World and wrote and produced, The Return of a King to Seychelles.
Afrikult. is an online forum for people to connect, explore and expand knowledge on African literature and culture combined. Afrikult. aims to make African literature less exotic, less highbrow and more accessible. (afrikult.com)
