The economic crisis has had a dramatic impact on the communities Casa Central serves. Unemployment and foreclosure rates, higher than citywide averages, are impacting families struggling to survive. The emerging needs of families during these difficult times challenge us to respond creatively to those who may have never sought out our services in the past. We have been careful during this crisis to be good stewards of our resources by making adjustments in staffing and in spending in order to ensure the financial strength of the organization. We are grateful for the continued support of our many long-term corporate and foundation partners, and for promising relationships with new funders. Our committed workforce has demonstrated great resilience, allowing us to keep our commitments to the families we serve. Our partnerships with private and public entities, individuals and congregations, continue to propel and advance our mission. In addition, we have benefited from an increased number of volunteers, especially those working to foster lifelong learning among our children and youth.

Casa Central remains confident about our continued ability to serve individuals and families in need. With that in mind, Casa Central completed a strategic planning process in 2009 that brought together agency leadership, staff, and the Board of Directors, and identified three priorities for the agency which will help us move forward with purpose as economic recovery begins. We are committed to remaining strong as we adapt to ongoing limitations brought about by the crisis, and to maintaining the high quality services we provide to families who need our help. To that end, we will proactively position Casa Central to secure resources to support long term needs, expand services to other Hispanic communities, and remain the employer of choice in the bilingual community.

Inspiring lifelong learning... According to the 2008 Illinois School Report Card, less than 55% of Hispanic students graduate from Casa Central’s local high schools.

Casa Central’s early childhood, out-of-school time and summer programs, which serve approximately 1,000 participants every year, have been designed to provide at-risk children and youth with the opportunities necessary to beat the odds, and become lifelong learners.

Casa Central’s Head Start programs are designed to help Hispanic families overcome language and cultural barriers and prepare their children to enter kindergarten. Child Development Centers served 348 children in FY08 and 301 in FY09. ABC Home-based Head Start served 161 children in FY08 and 144 in FY09.

The School Age Program encourages parental involvement and provides at-risk children ages 5-12 with tutoring and homework help, and a safe place to play, learn, and grow. The program reached 310 children in FY08, and 134 in FY09.

In FY09, Casa Central partnered with Von Humboldt Elementary School to create a new Community Schools Initiative, providing educational enrichment activities for children, and lifelong learning opportunities for their parents. The program served 196 children in FY09.

Youth Options Unlimited provides teens with skills and opportunities to make positive life choices, working with 81 teens in FY08 and 116 in FY09.

The Adolescent Parenting Program works with both the teens and their children, enhancing the child’s early learning capabilities, and helping teen parents find appropriate peer support. The program served 77 children in FY08, and 110 in FY09.

Serving 1,000 children and youth annually

One child at at time...Stefany arrived in Chicago speaking no English. Her family had left Puerto Rico hoping to find better opportunities. Although she had always been a good student, her first report card in her new high school reflected the difficulties that her limited language skills were causing. Recognizing that she needed additional assistance outside of school, she came to the Youth Options Unlimited program requesting tutoring and homework assistance. Stefany adjusted quickly, participating in Peer Education, helping create the program newsletter, and working with YOU during the summer as an After School Matters intern in the Head Start program. Stefany’s grades and English language skills have improved dramatically, and she has even been nominated to the National Honor Society. Throughout her time at YOU, she has become a role model for other teens in the program, as well as her two younger siblings.

Stefany has been admitted to Northeastern Illinois University where she plans to major in Education. Stefany believes that she will be an excellent teacher and will inspire lifelong learning in her own students.

Casa Central’s Foster Care and Adoption program worked to address the shortage of homes than can accommodate the special needs of Hispanic children and youth who have been removed from abusive and neglectful homes. The program served 89 youth in FY08 and 83 in FY09.Intact Family Services is a home-based, family centered program that allows children to remain safely at home, rather than be placed in substitute care. The program served 189 children and families in FY08 and 181in FY09. The Domestic Violence Intervention program’s mission is to help victims and potential victims of domestic violence break the cycle of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse in their lives. The program served 81 individuals in FY08 and 66 in FY09. The Casa Central Chicago Safe Start program, launched in FY09, is a community-based initiative whose objective is to reduce the trauma of exposure to violence on young children. In FY09, the program served 94 children and adults, and provided training to 145 health care and social work professionals.

Providing safety and fostering self-reliance...

Residents of Casa Central’s community struggle to overcome a number of obstacles that include poverty, inadequate education, unemployment, substance abuse, gang violence, and domestic violence.

Casa Central’s programs build an important bridge that helps Hispanic families overcome barriers and allow them the opportunity to make further positive contributions to their families and communities.

The Community Technology Center offers computer classes, help with resume writing, and open computer access to children and adults from Casa Central’s other programs and throughout the community. The Center served 538 individuals in FY08,

and 861in FY09. The Early Intervention program provides tuition-free Certified Nursing Assistant training designed to increase the number of bilingual health care professionals working in our communities. The program graduated 37participants in FY08, and 37

in FY09.La Posada, Casa Central’s interim housing program, offers vocational and computer training, counseling, transportation, and a food pantry, as well as supportive services, as part of its holistic approach to helping homeless families to become permanently

One family at a time...Bianca, a 47 year old single mother, was sharing an apartment with her boyfriend. After she lost her job, her home life became more difficult, and her boyfriend began abusing her, both emotionally and physically. Bianca fled the home with her 10 year old daughter, and ended up at a domestic violence shelter. From there, she was referred to the La Posada interim housing program. During her stay at La Posada, Bianca participated in the EDUCATE program, which strengthens vocational skills, and learned the computer skills necessary to create a resume, and search and apply for jobs online. The program provided her family with groceries, bus passes, employment referrals, and housing assistance. Bianca also attended classes to obtain a Security Officer Certification, which led to a job offer. With stable employment, Bianca was able to obtain an apartment for her family and begin to live independently.Through her participation in La Posada, Bianca gained marketable job skills and life management tools to become more competitive in the workplace and get back on a path to safety and self sufficiency.

Promoting healthy, active lifestyles...

Hispanic seniors face a number of challenges. They may struggle to support themselves, suffer from inactivity and poor nutrition, and they may no longer be able to take care of their own basic needs. In addition, language and cultural barriers may keep them from receiving the help they need.

Casa Central’s continuum of bilingual and bicultural senior programs has been designed to specifically address the needs of seniors through all stages of life, helping them manage their health, remain active within the community, and maintain their dignity.

Through the Over 55 program, unemployed seniors receive part-time job experience and training, with the ultimate goal of securing long-term employment to become or remain self-sufficient. The program served 42 seniors in FY08 and 45 in FY09.

The Adult Wellness Center provides healthy, culturally appropriate meals and a stimulating environment to stabilize, maintain, and maximize the health and wellness of Hispanic seniors, focusing on both physical and mental

health needs. The Center served 172 seniors in FY08 and 224 in FY09.

The Home Care program is designed to prevent premature nursing home placement by helping seniors to remain independent within their own homes and communities through a wide variety of services designed to serve each client’s specific needs. The program served 1,478 seniors in FY08 and 1,685 in FY09.

Serving over 1,700 seniors annually

One senior at a time...When she enrolled in the Adult Wellness Center, Maria would spend much of her time wandering the hallway, anxious and eager to go home. She was not interested in program activities or being part of the group. During 2009, the AWC enhanced its services for seniors suffering from dementia with the addition of the New Horizons Room, designed to provide customized therapeutic and recreational activities for participants who require a greater level of individualized care. This additional personalized attention has made a big difference in Maria’s life. Her level of active participation has increased, and now she spends her time at the AWC engaged in group activities, working on puzzles, talking, reminiscing and sharing meals with the Cooking Club, and nurturing a doll that helps her remember caring for her own children.

Maria still enjoys walking, but now she walks with the Horizons Walking Club. The Adult Wellness Center is helping Maria stay mentally and physically active, improving her health and quality of life.
