Caroline Noakes beat breast cancer, but the 30-year-

old wanted to be absolutely sure the disease

wasn’t going to return. She had a preventative

double mastectomy at Women’s College Hospital

in December 2012. In May 2013, she became the

first patient to undergo surgery in our new hospital,

this time for breast reconstruction. While the quality

of care was equal to her previous procedures, there

was one noticeable difference this time around.

“After my mastectomy, I remember waking up

in a stark, windowless room. This time, it was a

beautiful, soothing space, not at all clinical and with

lots of natural light. It gave me such confidence in

the level of care I was receiving.”

Today, Caroline is cancer-free, back at work and

enjoying life.

“Women’s College Hospital has a reputation for

ground-breaking work,” says Caroline. “I feel lucky

to be part of such a rich history.”

At the end of 2013, in the middle of the ice storm, Women’s College Hospital Foundation

received the largest gift of its campaign and we couldn’t be more delighted!

In fact, many incredibly generous donors stepped forward in 2013 to help build a better

hospital, so that you can have better healthcare in the future.

Thank you to WCH patients and their families, volunteers, friends, corporations and

foundations who invested in the capital campaign and got people talking about women’s

health and healthcare. The conversation continued at Grape to Glass, the Golf Classic and,

the third annual Women for Women’s lunch, which collectively raised $500,000 in 2013 to

support programs, infrastructure and patient amenities.

2013 also saw the launch of the 100 Women Initiative, with the aim of raising $10,000,000

from 100 women leaders to transform healthcare for women and pioneer new models of

care that benefit patients everywhere.

Since the opening last spring of the first phase of the Hospital of the Future, countless

people have benefited from WCH’s world-leading health professionals, innovative healthcare

programs, ground-breaking research and ambulatory care facilities that get patients home

within 18 hours even after surgery.

Together, we’re not just changing healthcare; we’re changing lives. We can’t thank you

In a hospital that’s making its mark as a change leader, change is a good thing.

On June 23, 2014, Women’s College Hospital Foundation (WCHF) welcomes

new President & CEO Kathy Hay. An outstanding leader, Kathy brings to

WCHF a passion for research, healthcare and education and for ensuring the

right kind of care for patients and families across diverse communities. Kathy

will work closely with new Board Chair Ann Davis, recently retired partner at

KPMG Canada. As a Foundation Board member and co-chair of the KPMG

campaign for WCH, Ann helped raise $600,000 – setting the bar high for

other professional services firms to follow.

On June 12, 2013, Women’s College Hospital achieved a milestone in Canadian healthcare: The doors opened at Phase I of

the Hospital of the Future, the first stand-alone outpatient hospital in Canada. Built with donor support, the new 10-storey

ambulatory care facility is revolutionizing the way healthcare is provided and improving our health system as a whole.

Among many innovations, the hospital features clinics and services situated within the same ‘neighbourhoods’ so patients can

access all their health providers in a single visit. Each of the eight ambulatory care surgical suites has touch-of-a-button access

to patient images and lab results. Two ORs are dedicated to sports medicine and one to gynecology. Patients receiving surgery

transition through all the phases of treatment and recovery in the same bed and with the same care team, and are back home

again, all without requiring an over-night stay.

“We are developing innovative models of care that are helping to keep people out of hospital,” WCH President and CEO Marilyn

Emery told several hundred guests at the ribbon cutting, including Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and The Honourable Deb

Matthews, Ontario Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. “This is the future of healthcare!”

Funding the Future

This is just the first step in our commitment to change the future of healthcare.

Construction is now underway on the hospital’s second phase, due to open in 2015.

Women’s College Hospital Foundation has set a goal to raise $21 million over the next

two years to complete our redevelopment, support programs, purchase specialized

equipment and provide amenities to better serve our patients.

The future of WCH is one of promise and innovation – a future that I am proud to be part of. WCH is pioneering innovative research and treatment centres, which everyone in our city, province and country will benefit from. The prominent researchers and doctors at WCH are changing the face of hospital healthcare as we know it.

As a husband and father, I am truly excited about the expansion thus far. The new WCH is certainly impressive in its architectural advancement, along with the new medical equipment it houses. I know that my support of surgical imaging technologies will aid an all-encompassing delivery of services targeting everything from breast cancer and migraine headaches, to arthritis, HIV and geriatric care. Through technology, WCH can even provide treatment for post-partum depression in remote areas. This truly is front line medical care with a global reach.

I also find myself thinking about the warmth and non-traditional setting of the new hospital. An abundance of windows and natural sunlight that envelops patients in such difficult moments is a small, but important comfort WCH will provide.

This is the new WCH and it’s why I encourage you to offer your support. With so many worthy causes to champion, I think it’s important to be part of a healthcare revolution that is rethinking how research is conducted and how patients can benefit.

Dorothy St. John’s affiliation with Women’s College Hospital began as a favour to a friend. It was 1998

and WCH was making news for its proposed merger with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. “A friend

asked if I was interested in marching at the hospital to show our support and keep it going,” recalls the

80-year-old. “I said yes because it meant so much to her.”

During the hours she spent walking, Dorothy started to learn more about the hospital she was backing. She liked

what she heard. In short order, the Scarborough resident signed on as a patient of Dr. Deborah Levitan in WCH’s

Family Practice Health Centre.

That same year, she made her first donation to Women’s College Hospital Foundation. By 2002, in recognition of the

“excellent service” she receives, Dorothy became a monthly donor. She hasn’t missed a month since.

Dr. Sheila Laredo was a PhD candidate at WCH before joining the staff in 2004 as an endocrinologist and clinical scientist. In the decade since, she has earned the title of Chief of Staff, while juggling a busy personal life that includes husband Richard Marcovitz, a financial services tax partner at PwC Canada, and four children, two of whom have special needs.

“There aren’t many places that would have created an environment where someone in my situation could have accomplished what I’ve accomplished, given the other limitations in my life,” Sheila says. “We’re always talking about equity at Women’s College Hospital. No one offered it. It was just there.”

Richard agrees. “Giving my wife these opportunities confirmed the hospital is a place that not only focuses on women’s health, but also allows women to be wives, mothers, daughters,

volunteers . . . whatever they want and need to be in life.”

This all-encompassing commitment to women is what inspired Sheila and Richard to make their first donation to Women’s College Hospital Foundation in 2008. WCH’s vision of a new model of healthcare that includes community partnerships is what keeps them giving year after year.

“We’re building a building, but we’re also building a hospital without walls,” explains Sheila. “Women’s is becoming part of our larger community in ways that address the gaps in healthcare and respect our partners. Being a parent of children with chronic needs, I live the need for those partnerships and care that isn’t time-limited.” As Chief of Staff, she sees the benefits of that innovative approach every day. “The same things that make our patients happy, make our physicians happy. It’s such a pleasure to work here.”

Gail Appel credits the incredible women in her life as her inspiration for joining WCHF’s 100 Women Initiative. “I love the courage of women to go out there and do their level best in the world,” says the noted Canadian philanthropist, social worker and artist.

Gail is one of 22 women change leaders who celebrated the collective power of women with a gift of $100,000 or more to Women’s College Hospital. The 100 Women Initiative is a unique opportunity for 100 women to raise $10 million to transform healthcare and continue the conversation about women’s health.

Already a WCH donor with her husband Mark Appel, Gail says this latest contribution is her personal gift. She honours her parents, who were dedicated community volunteers in Saskatchewan; her friend and former WCH and WCHF Chair Carol Cowan; and her late mother-in-law Bluma Appel, who founded the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research and was instrumental in helping to break the glass ceiling for women in the corporate boardroom. “In 1979 - 80, I would initially attend meetings with her as another woman to balance the board discussions, and to offer a younger woman’s perspective,” she says. “It was remarkably interesting and very hard to get the status quo changed.”

Gail sees the 100 Women Initiative as an opportunity to continue Bluma’s drive for equality. “This is a chance for women to level the playing field by making a meaningful commitment to the next generation of women. We owe it to the next generation of women and men to strengthen women’s healthcare and, by extension, the health of our families.” Gail is particularly interested in WCH’s focus on health prevention, including the discovery of the BRCA cancer genes, which can help identify breast and ovarian cancer before they even develop.

The 100 Women Initiative was launched in 2013 to get 100 leading Canadian women talking about healthcare, while raising $10 million for Women’s College Hospital. The following extraordinary women continue to inspire others by telling their WCH story and sharing why this project is so important to them:

Marjorie Swanson and Margaret Chambers shared a lifelong

commitment to Women’s College Hospital. Sadly, both

passed away in 2013. Their memories live on in their legacies

to Women’s College Hospital Foundation.

“I owe a lot to Women’s College,” Dr. Swanson said several years

ago of her decision to include a bequest to WCHF in her will. “I had

many interesting times there.”

Dr. Swanson was 35, with a firm idea of the kind of family medicine

she wanted to practice, when she graduated from the University

of Toronto and joined the staff of WCH in the 1950s. “I knew

everyone,” she says. “The doctors were a fascinating bunch.”

She spent her entire career as a family doctor at WCH, eventually

serving as Chief of Family and Community Medicine from 1969

to 1972. Those years remained fond memories throughout her

retirement. Dr. Swanson died in November 2013 at age 93, leaving

a gift in her will to the Foundation.

Margaret Chambers was also a woman who carved a bold

path in life. A mathematics graduate who spent 28 years in the

insurance industry, she knew the value of a good investment. She

was a strong supporter of WCH throughout her lifetime and also

supported the hospital with a bequest in her will.

“I like to support organizations where I know the people involved,”

Ms Chambers explained of her many generous gifts prior to her

death in October 2013, just one week shy of her 97th birthday.

“There’s great support and talent at Women’s College Hospital. I

think we women should support women’s organizations.”

WCHF is pleased to remember both of these Spirit of Life Society

members.

Brompton Group first invested in Women’s College Hospital Foundation because Chris Hoffmann, a company director and eight-year member of the WCHF Board, introduced them to an interesting Foundation event. They keep on giving because it makes good business sense.

“There are so few women-oriented events,” explains Dana Rennie, Senior Marketing Manager of the Toronto-based investment fund manager. “When Women for Women’s was introduced four years ago, we were quite excited. Finally, a good opportunity to engage our women investment advisors.”

Brompton has donated more than $40,000 to WCHF since 2008, primarily through special events, including Women for Women’s, Grape to Glass, An Evening With and the Golf Classic. “Women’s College Hospital is one of the largest causes we support,” says Rennie. Many of the company’s 20 staff members attend the Foundation’s events alongside Brompton’s clients and advisors. Some of those guests, in turn, have become valued Foundation donors in their own right.

Says Rennie: “We like to support good causes and this is a good cause.” And not just because WCH is the first and only academic, ambulatory care hospital in Ontario with a focus on the health of women.

Events SpotlightCheers to you!On April 11, Women’s College Hospital Foundation welcomed more

than 300 guests to the fourth annual Grape to Glass wine-tasting party

and luxury silent wine auction. Over the past four years, with Presenting

sponsor Scotiabank and other sponsors by our side, WCHF has raised

more than $400,000 to help change the future of healthcare and the

lives of countless women and men who will continue to benefit from our

ground-breaking research and care.

health and a fond farewell to the original Grenville Street hospital!

More than 1,000 guests watched as 100 artists with Art Battle Canada

transformed the empty hospital walls into the largest community art

exhibition in the city. The May 30 showcase also featured collaborations

with WCH scientists to showcase the crossroads of medicine and art.

Hitting the links ‘fore’ Women’sOn June 10, Women’s College Hospital Foundation hosted 120 golfers at

the prestigious Coppinwood Golf Club for the sixth annual Women’s College

Hospital Foundation Golf Classic. Over six years, with sponsor support, the golf

classic has raised over $1 million to help change the future of healthcare.

Let’s talk women’s healthOn November 20, Women’s College Hospital Foundation hosted more than 600

women and raised over $300,000 towards the redevelopment of the hospital at the

third annual Women for Women’s lunch. Moderated by health and medical expert

Dr. Marla Shapiro, the lunch featured a panel discussion with WCH breast cancer

researcher Dr. Steven Narod; Anne Parker, one of the first women to undergo

genetic testing for breast cancer; and journalist and breast cancer survivor Libby

It has been a privilege to serve Women’s College Hospital. It has allowed me to participate in an innovative movement that enhances the patient experience, improves outcomes and reduces the financial strains placed on our healthcare system. In particular, the opportunity to work alongside people who are making the hospital of the future, a reality, has been inspiring.

Many know my initial decision to get involved was personal. Women deserve at least one hospital – in a city the size of Toronto – that recognizes gender differences. For me, Women’s College is the best choice. I have since learned how its expertise extends well beyond the needs of women. An investment in this institution clearly delivers a huge return to society.

I am truly excited about the Hospital of the Future – and the future of our hospital largely because of the supporters it attracts. Your generosity is only exceeded by your passion to fulfill the mission of this incredible institution.

We can be rightfully proud of our achievements. But we cannot let up. Let’s continue to reach higher and go further than we currently think is possible.
