Convocation Participants

Benjamin D. Bascom is the son of Sterling LaVell and Marilyn Bascom and was born andraised in orem, utah. he is the seventh of eight children and the uncle to five nieces andseven nephews. after serving an LdS mission to Chicago, he enrolled at Byu to pursue adegree in english in preparation for law school. after completing an orCa project on 18th-century British poetics, his occupational interests shifted toward the academic world, leadinghim to set a new goal to pursue an advanced degree in literary studies from the universityof illinois at urbana-Champaign, which he will begin this fall. While at Byu he has earnednumerous scholarships as well as recognitions for his academic abilities. his future plan isto become a professor of 19th-century american literature. he has served as the Byu englishSociety president, worked at the Writing Center, and completed an honors thesis. he enjoyshiking Mount timpanogos, exploring Southern utah’s slot canyons, and eating delicious food.

Jason Hills is the son of david and Melaney hills and is graduating with a bachelor of arts inphilosophy. he grew up in orem, utah, and served as a missionary in the hungary BudapestMission. While at Byu Jason has benefited from the university’s commitment to mentoredlearning and would particularly like to thank dr. david Jensen, his faculty mentor. Jason hasenjoyed working as editor in chief of the Philosophy department publication Aporia: A StudentJournal of Philosophy; his essay “Why Prefer a System of desires?” was awarded first place inthe 2008 david h. yarn Philosophical essay Contest.

Rachel Husberg was born and raised in La Crescenta, California. Both of her parentsgraduated from Byu. rachel is receiving her bachelor of arts in humanities with a musicemphasis. She has played the violin since the age of five. at Byu she was a member of theSymphony orchestra. rachel enjoys performing in musical theater productions and swingdancing. this past spring she was able to travel with the Ballroom dance touring Companyon their united States tour as a member of the technical crew. in June 2008 she marriedChristopher husberg. this summer rachel began her training as a Suzuki violin teacher.

erin Margaret Shaw, daughter of Mark and Linda Shaw, attended high school in Carmel,indiana, and Columbus, Georgia, but has most recently lived in Mequon, Wisconsin. inaddition to earning a degree in linguistics, erin is graduating with honors as well as withtwo minors, teSoL and business. in her linguistics studies she has studied french, Spanish,Mandarin Chinese, and romanian. Since returning from the Washington dC north Mission,she has taught Spanish and eSL at the Missionary training Center and will continue teachingeSL as she pursues a teSoL graduate certificate and an Ma at Byu this fall. She has beena recipient of the William henry thorpe Scholarship or has been named a Brigham youngscholar each year of her studies. her senior year she played flute in the university orchestra.She also played on the women’s extramural lacrosse team for two years. after her graduatestudies erin wants to teach english as a second language to adult immigrant populations inthe united States.

G. Lynn Williams was born in rural South Wales, united Kingdom. from 1971 to 1978 hestudied at the university of London, during which time he minored in Portuguese, majoredin Spanish, and completed a doctorate in Spanish sociolinguistics. during the last year of hisdoctoral studies, he taught part-time in the department of hispanic Studies at the universityof Cardiff.

in 1978 Lynn secured a permanent position as a lecturer in Spanish at the university ofexeter. there he taught Spanish language, Spanish linguistics, medieval Spanish literature,and various aspects of Spanish history and culture.

over the years he supervised a number of exeter graduate students reading for master’sdegrees and Phds in subjects as diverse as Spanish sociolinguistics, the minority languagesof Spain, and the Kharjas. he also served at exeter as deputy chair of the School of ModernLanguages, as associate dean of the faculty of arts, and as chair of the department ofSpanish. from 1997 to 1999 he acted as external examiner in Spanish for the university ofoxford, and in 1998 he spent two semesters at the university of Cambridge as a visitingprofessor.

he has written and published on medieval Spanish literature, Cervantes, Spanishsociolinguistics, orthographic theory and practice, language and national identity in Spainand the united Kingdom, and 17th-century Spanish diplomatic history.

he is married to Mabel de Blas Martinez, and they have three children: Gemma, John,and antony.
