The weekend was made special because of the return of a number of “oldies” who were responsible for establishing this ne tradition back in the seventies. In those early times each year an oval of the School was totally resurfaced and upgraded. A job which would have cost in those days at least $10,000 was accomplished for a mere $1,000 because of the generosity of those who provided machinery and expertise free of charge. Now not only past students attend but we are also joined by parents, members of staff and students. It has become a School family occasion. Next year we are hoping to focus on a signicant project at our Burry Weekend but each year we concentrate on the regular cleaning up tasks. As well this year we painted the “Summer House” which has been relocated to adjacent the gymnasium. We constructed a fence at the Junior School and extended a garden next to the chapel. We are grateful to the School for providing accommodation to those who travel to us for the occasion and for providing the meals throughout the weekend. If you are close by at the beginning of the year you are most welcome to attend. It is most denitely a special occasion each year. BURRY PROJECT WEEKENDFor the 34th year the Burry Work Weekend attracted back a group of willing workers although the crowd was smaller than in previous years. The weekend was made special because of the return of a number of “oldies” who were responsible for establishing this fi ne tradition back in the seventies.

Next year we are hoping to focus on a signifi cant project at our Burry Weekend but each year we concentrate on the regular cleaning up tasks. It is most defi nitely a special occasion each year.

Thankyou to this dedicated band of workers who have been attending the Burry Project Weekend for the past 34 years.

Dr Roger Gifford, Chief Research Scientist in CSIRO’s Plant Industry says, “Observations and conclusions like Dr Roderick’s will improve climate change predictions and lead to more realistic assumptions about the nature of human-induced climate change that sit behind a great deal of climate change impacts and adaptation research. He is a scientist’s scientist.” Dr Thomas Barlow, a research policy specialist, adds: “This is curiosity-led science that has raised questions of global signifi cance. He starts with very simple but important questions and answers them with extraordinary rigour and originality. In my mind this is truly inspirational stuff – science at its best.” These are great words of praise for past student Michael Roderick.

Our 90th anniversary Year has started well with a large amount of activity on campus. The building program continues to occupy a tremendous part of the time. We have been greeted in 2010 with wonderful news of the Class of 2009. We were able to have three of our students secure the coverted OP1 in 2009. An OP1is the top score in the State for exiting students. An OP1 will give students access to any University course in the State and the Nation. Whilst our Year 12 class of 2009 was not particularly large we did fare very well with more than 40% of the OP eligible students scoring an OP10 or better. This is a tremendous result for a small rural school.

This has spurred us on to greater things and we take on the activities of the Anniversary year with great confi dence. The School and its current students will be working very hard to provide a welcoming and inviting environment for past students who are expected to fl ock into Charters Towers on the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

From the Headmaster… Soul Mates

Dr Michael Roderick has been awarded the 2009 Australasian Science Prize for climate change research that “has raised questions of global signifi cance”. This is the second highest award for science throughout Australia and New Zealand. It is awarded by the Australasian Science magazine each year in recognition of world-class science from our most inspiring minds. Criteria for judging include scientifi c originality, breadth of impact and communication to both the scientifi c and broader communities.

Michael is the son of the late Don Roderick, well known architect on the Past Students Walls of Fame. He is a joint Fellow in the Australian National University’s Research School of Earth Sciences and Research School of Biology. One head of faculty told his sister Jane Carstens “he is a rare beast and not swayed by political opinion or pressure groups with his research in such a politically sensitive area.”

His research is based on “a deceptively simple experiment that measures the rates of water evaporation from about 300 standardised pans distributed around Australia and more overseas.” Intriguingly they reveal that even though the world has been warming, evaporation has been declining. Other research shows that rather than get drier with global warming, precipitation is predicted to increase. Comprehending and unravelling this “pan evaporation paradox” leads to the whole question of how water availability has changed and might change.

Congratulations to Megan Stafford, Kate Durack and Penny Carter who all achieved an OP1 in 2009

The students will be honouring our School in a very special way during the “90 n 10” celebrations. The major involvement of current students will be the “90 n 10” relay run. This will commence at our spiritual home, the 1942 Memorial at Fletcher Creek, and come all the way into Charters Towers and then up the main streets. We will ask local offi cials to assemble in front of the Hospital where they will be honoured by the students as they run past. The relay will then fi nish at the O’Keeffe Oval at approximately 6:30 pm.

Our current students will assist in a variety of ways over the weekend to make this a memorable celebration of the School’s history and resurrection in 2000. Students will provide some spectacles with both Netball and Rugby League matches against traditional sporting rivals. We will play Rugby League against Columba Catholic College (the old Mt Carmel) and Netball against Blackheath and Thornburgh College. Students will also assist in the serving of food and waiting of tables at the Black and White Ball to be held on the Saturday night. We are preparing in great anticipation for a wonderful year and especially the Queen’s Birthday weekend where we can celebrate and thank our supporters for their efforts.

I, along with all the staff and students, are looking forward to the Birthday celebrations and we hope that a large number of past students and supporters of the School will come and partake in the celebrations of our wonderful School. I hope to see you there on the weekend!

Welcome to this issue of “Servire Regnare” which has come around much earlier this year due to our “90 n 10” celebrations which will be held 11th – 13th June during the Queen’s Birthday weekend. This weekend takes the place of our usual October reunion weekend. It is more a celebration of 90 years of the “old” School and 10 years of the “new” School as well as a reunion for past students. We invite not only past students but also the community to celebrate this occasion with us.

The programme for the weekend is included in this issue and has been developed by a committee headed by past student Ross McLean. Ross runs a very successful accounting fi rm in Townsville and is also president of ASSG Ltd. We hope the weekend’s activities will be inviting to you all. One major focal point of the weekend will be the Black & White Ball on the Saturday night. This is the only activity that has to be pre-booked, unlike reunions where you can pay at the door for the dinner. We expect quite a large crowd for the weekend so it is imperative your accommodation is arranged as early as you can. Many have already fi nalised such arrangements with Kerry Wilcox’s class of 1980 hoping to have over 50 returning!!

Further reports in this issue outline the progress to date of the Museum Appeal and the recent Burry Project Weekend. The great tradition of the Burry Weekend has now been going for 34 years and it is a great way to start each year while the Museum Project is an ambitious programme by the Past Students Association to preserve and protect the School’s memorabilia and appropriately house our valuable archives.

If you know a past student who does not receive “Servire Regnare”, that indicates they are not on the Past Students’ Register or the register contains an inaccurate address. Please ask the past student to contact Community Development Offi cer, Laurelle Thomson at [email protected]

We look forward to seeing many of you at our “90 ’n 10” celebrations and we sincerely hope you enjoy the weekend.

At Reunion Weekend last year Jacki Clayton of the Brisbane St Gabriel’s Old Girls’ group launched the Past Students Museum Appeal and last December you would have all received detailed information about this major project and how you can make donations. We wish to express our sincere thanks to all those who have sent back donations to this appeal. The total received is slowly climbing and at the time of this publication we have reached $…………… This is still somewhat short of our target of $400,000 but we realise it is early days yet and we are asking for funds in an economy which is just starting to recover. All donations are of course tax deductable and if you so desire your name will be recorded on the “Donor Walls” which will be located at the gallery entrance of the Museum.

During the 90 n 10 celebrations we intend to bless the foundation plaque of the museum building. It will be a special occasion and we hope it will encourage other past students and school supporters to donate to this worthy past student project.

ASSG Year 12 students, Sally Ford, Ashleigh Thomson, Megan Stafford and Kate Durack join the

Gabes Old Girls at their September luncheon

The protection and preservation of our archives and memorabilia is considered essential by our past students association. For a school nearing its centenary a facility which will not only be admired by all but just as importantly be used by all students who pass through it, makes our museum something special and sacred. This will be our gift to our school. We urge more people to come on board and support us.

Mrs Jacki Clayton hands a cheque for $1000 from the Brisbane Gabe’s Old Girls to launch the Museum Appeal to President of the Past Students Association, Howard Lowe, watched by Mr Michael Tucker. Their cheque honours Miss Edna Eden, the staff and students who took St Gabriels to

Richmond in 1942
