It’s In Our DNA• TheUSOCwasreorganizedbytheTedStevensOlympicandAmateurSportsAct,originallyenactedin1978. PursuanttoSection220511oftheact,theUSOCisrequiredtosubmitareporttoCongresseveryquadrennialdetailingitsoperationsfortheprecedingfouryears.
• Thisreportmustincludeinformationregardingtheparticipationofwomen,peoplewithdisabilitiesandracial/ethnicminoritiesinNGBathletic,governanceandmanagementactivities. Thereportmustincludedescriptionsofprogramsandinitiativesthatencouragetheparticipationofwomen,peoplewithdisabilitiesandracial/ethnicminoritieswithineachNGBandHPMO.

• TheD&IScorecardmeasuresthediversityoftheUSOC,NGBandHPMO’sboardofdirectors,standingcommittees,staff,membership,nationalteamcoachesandathletes,anddevelopmentalteamcoachesandathletes.
• Thescorecardalsomeasurestheparticipationofwomen,peopleofcolor(AfricanAmerican/Black,Asian,Hispanic,NativeAmerican,PacificIslanderandtwoormoreraces),personwithdisabilitiesandveterans.
1st and 2nd DimensionsPersonality - Thisincludesanindividual'slikesanddislikes,values,andbeliefs. Personalityisshapedearlyinlifeandisbothinfluencedby,andinfluences,theotherthreelayersthroughoutone’slifetimeandcareerchoices.
InternalDimensions - Theseincludeaspectsofdiversityoverwhichwehavenocontrol(though“physicalability”canchangeovertimeduetochoiceswemaketobeactiveornot,orincasesofillnessoraccidents). Thisdimensionisthelayerinwhichmanydivisionsbetweenandamongpeopleexistandwhichformsthecoreofmanydiversityefforts. Thesedimensionsincludethefirstthingsweseeinotherpeople,suchasraceorgenderandonwhichwemakemanyassumptionsandbasejudgments.
3rd and 4th Dimensions
ExternalDimensions - Theseincludeaspectsofourliveswhichwehavesomecontrolover,whichmightchangeovertime,andwhichusuallyformthebasisfordecisionsoncareersandworkstyles. Thislayeroftendetermines,inpart,withwhomwedevelopfriendshipsandwhatwedoforwork. Thislayeralsotellsusmuchaboutwhomweliketobewith.
OrganizationalDimensions - Thislayerconcernstheaspectsofculturefoundinaworksetting. Whilemuchattentionofdiversityeffortsisfocusedontheinternaldimensionsissuesofpreferentialtreatmentandopportunitiesfordevelopmentorpromotionareimpactedbytheaspectsofthislayer.
