Oneworld is on the move. Crowning a fantastic year, September saw Oneworld move into a stunning Georgian building in the heart of Bloomsbury. Built the year the American Declaration of Independence was signed, Gibbon’s Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire was published, and the painter John Constable was born, our new offices will provide the perfect backdrop to a busy publishing schedule in the years ahead.

There is a body in the lane. They caught him at a break in the high hedge-row, and did it by moonlight. He lies crumpled, like casually discarded clothes. The search is over, and all around me the night is suddenly vast and cold. I watch, I breathe, and then I run the last few feet and drop to his side.

‘Joe.’I grab the arm of his coat and roll him over. He flops onto his back, all

limp.‘Joe.’He makes a weak sigh, but his eyes are swollen shut. I touch his face.‘Joe, please.’‘Jim. Help me.’ It comes out low, with a soft spray of blood.‘Oh God, Joe. Joe, hold on, hold on. It’s going to be all right.’ I know that

it is not going to be all right. His whole body has caved in. He will die soon. I have no phone, and no help, and if I leave him now, he will die alone.

‘Why?’‘Oh, Jesus, Joe, you know why.’‘They wanted to hurt me.’‘They’re gone. Just hang on for us.’‘Will you look after me?’‘Aye, Joe, I’ll look after you.’But what can I do – first-aid? It’s hopeless, and what if I did actually save

his life? I thought that I wanted to, and that’s why I charged out here after him, but now this has happened, it would be better to let him reach the end. He is going to die, but at least I will be here with him.

‘Joe, I love you.’

MAGNIFICENT JOEJames WheatleyOne of the most exciting débuts of 2013, set in the north of England where childhood friendships last longer than they should, redemption comes at a high price, and a man called Joe is about to change everything

Jim’s life is in pieces. Locked up as a teenager for taking the wrong sort of punch – the sort that sees another boy dead – it was over before it had even begun. Thrown back among his childhood mates, plagued by anger and guilt, he finds himself struggling to salvage something worthwhile from the wreckage of his past. While stumbling through days of heavy drinking, mind-numbing labour, and casual violence, Jim befriends Joe – a man with the mind of a 7-year-old – and together this unlikely duo keep each other afloat. But when rumours of a crime get out of control, and community prejudices start to close in, Jim must move fast before he loses everything, all over again.

With echoes of Alan Warner and Alan Sillitoe, Magnificent Joe is an exuberant story of having to find your way in a world where hope is something for other people. Gritty, un-flinching, but ultimately uplifting, it is a story of our times.

JAMES WHEATLEY is a research consultant, musician, and writer. A graduate of the Sheffield Creative Writing Course, he lives in Yorkshire where he divides his time between writing and playing guitar in several bands. This is his first novel.

TELLING THE BEESPeggy Hesketh

“A beautifully imagined novel of friendship and unspoken love, of the far-reaching consequences of words left unspoken, and the power of truth both to wound and to heal. A marvel.” Elizabeth George

Young Albert Honig spends much of his time in solitude, his daily routine shaped by the almost mystical attention he quietly lavishes on his bees. Into his tightly repressed existence bursts a brash young neighbour, whose vivacity and boldness begin to transform his life. Yet years pass by, feelings are repressed, opportunities missed. Until one day – led by a trail of bees – Albert discovers her body and is plunged back into his memories, where he must finally confront the lies and secrets that led to their estrangement. In doing so he unearths the truth of Claire’s murder – a question not so much of who but why.

“Wonderful! The voice is so masterfully done, the mysteries of life and death so compellingly evoked.” Karen Joy Fowler, author of The Jane Austen Book Club

“A thoughtful, compelling story of loss and regret and the unforseeable consequences that come when the truth is finally revealed.” Gail Tsukiyama, author of The Samurai’s Garden

PEGGY HESKETH is a journalist and author. Her short story “A Madness of Two” was selected by Elizabeth George for inclusion in her anthology Two of the Deadliest. Peggy currently teaches writing and rhetoric at the University of California.

So much noise.

I suspect this is why my bees no longer produce as much honey as they used to, nor does it taste quite as sweet as it once did.

Though I am an old man and my memory has begun to fade, I still recall a quiet time when the road in front of my home was made of dirt and gravel, and my dear mother could rock upon our front porch swing and greet each and every one of our neighbors by their given names. But that time is long gone, and with it a definition of home and family that inextricably linked bricks and mortar and genes and bloodlines.

I have tried to adjust as best I can to this modern era, and I have found that thankfully my bees still wax and wane with the seasons. They remind me that the hundreds and thousands of births and deaths that occur each honey season are the natural life cycle of the hive, and this in turn has helped to ease my pain at the passing of all of the people I have held dear. Death is a constant in life. I thought I had long since made my peace.

MAJOK TULBA fled war-torn South Sudan as a 16-year-old, and now lives in Sydney with his wife and children. He is CEO of the charity SudanCare, made a film that was a finalist at Tropfest, and won a NSW Premier’s CAL Literary Centre Fellowship.

BENEATH THE DARKENING SKYMajok TulbaWhen Majok Tulba was 9, rebel soldiers attacked his village, taking all children taller than an AK47 to become soldiers. Majok was too short. This novel is the story of what might have happened had he been an inch taller

On the day that Obinna’s village is savagely attacked by the rebel army and his father murdered, he witnesses violence beyond his imagination. Along with his older brother he finds himself thrown into a truck when the soldiers leave, to be shaped into an agent of horror – a child soldier. Marched through minefields and forced into battle, enduring a brutal daily existence in camp, Obinna slowly works out which parts of himself to save and which to sacrifice in this world turned upside down.

Beneath the Darkening Sky is a terrifyingly powerful, brilliantly insightful portrait of how a human being copes when forced to become inhuman. Like all great fiction, it imagines the unimaginable, and announces the arrival of a searing new voice from the heart of Africa.

“Majok Tulba’s powerful novel resonates long after the last page.” Alice Pung

The dogs are still barking. It’s not them yelling just at each other. Mama says that bark is for when someone is around who they don’t like.

The toilet house is a fair way from our hut. So I open the door just a little and peek out.

I see men with guns in the village.

Fear grips my hands and limbs. My mind goes blank. I have no idea what to do. What should I do? Who are these men?

I try to calm my breathing. No one in our village has a gun. I keep watching from my hiding place.

Three men are quite close. One is just wearing shorts and a T-shirt, but the other two are in camouflage pants and black shirts.

They’re running towards the hut I share with Akot.

They yell, “Everybody out!” I can hear doors being kicked and things crashing and breaking. Villagers scream and shout.

Akot is alone in the hut.

I don’t hear Papa’s voice. I tell myself, It’s okay, it’s okay, Papa is a man. He’ll be all right. We’ll all be all right. But my heart can’t stop thumping. My body shivers.

God, don’t let anyone hurt my brother. I love him. He’s mean sometimes, but I forgive him.

Are these the rebels I’ve heard about? Or the army? I haven’t seen rebels before and I don’t know how to tell them apart.

I can’t just hide in the toilet. I think of running into the bush but soldiers are everywhere. There’s no way I can run without them seeing me but I can’t stay where I am. I creep out, extra quiet, and head for the mango tree. My knees are shaking so much, like I’m going to fall over. When I get to the tree, I hide behind it and hold my breath. I need to stop shaking.

The sky is still dark. The sun isn’t out yet, but the village is so bright. Where is all the light coming from?

MAKING HABITS, BREAKING HABITSHow to Make Changes that Stick

Jeremy DeanThe founder of the hugely popular PsyBlog demonstrates how to bend habits to your will

Not all habits are bad. Most of us would love to adopt ‘posi-tive’ habits – evening runs, eating more veg, clearing out the email backlog – but can’t quite muster the self-control to make our resolutions stick. Now, psychologist Jeremy Dean shares the new brain science of routine that can improve anybody’s life, every day.

Habits are powerful, Dean explains, because of the way in which our minds run automatically. Amazingly, we spend a third of our waking hours falling into habits without real-izing it – ruminating over past events, or clicking through websites trawling for updates. Such unconscious actions and thoughts can, however, be steered to our benefit. Draw-ing on hundreds of fascinating studies, Dean reveals how to take control of your brain’s “auto-pilot” to transform will-power into reality.

Psychologist JEREMY DEAN is the founder and author of the website PsyBlog (www.psyblog.co.uk), which receives upwards of 1 million hits monthly and has been featured on the BBC and in the Guardian, The Times, the Huffington Post, and many others. Dean is currently a researcher at University College London, and this is his first book.

THE LAST REFUGEYemen, al-Qaeda, and the Battle for Arabia

Gregory D. JohnsenA fast-paced, revelatory account of how and why al-Qaeda is rebuilding in the unforgiving deserts of Yemen

Far from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, the US and al-Qaeda are fighting a clandestine war of drones and suicide bombers. The latest round of battles began in 2006, when twenty-three men escaped from a political prison in Yemen’s capital. Later they were joined by a dozen men released from Guantanamo Bay. Now, they stand ready to hijack the Arab Spring.

Renowned Yemen expert Gregory Johnsen charts the rise, fall, and ultimate resurrection of al-Qaeda in Yemen – a combustion of civil wars, Afghan refugees, and Islamic prophecy. He brings us inside al-Qaeda’s training camps and safe houses as the terrorists plot poison attacks and de-bate how to bring down a plane on Christmas Day. Based on years of on-the-ground interviews and never-before-trans-lated al-Qaeda battle notes, Johnsen delivers a gripping and incisive investigation of the true state of the Middle East.

“A breakthrough book... Penned in gripping prose and with incredible attention to detail, The Last Refuge unfolds with the pace of an action novel, but this story is all too true. If we ignore the widening covert war in Yemen and fail to learn from its complicated history, we do so at our own peril.” Jeremy Scahill, author of Blackwater

GREGORY D. JOHNSEN is a PhD candidate at Princeton University, a former Fulbright fellow, and a contributor to the Independent, Newsweek, and other publications. He has advised the UK Government and US Senate – and even Yemeni tribal shaykhs – and is interviewed frequently by the BBC, CNN, and many others. This is his first book.

THE GENIUS OF DOGSDiscovering the Unique Intelligence of Man’s Best Friend

Brian Hare and Vanessa WoodsThe award-winning scientist who started a revolution in the understanding of dog intelligence offers amazing new insights into the interior lives of our cleverest animal friends

Is your dog purposefully disobeying you? Probably, and usually behind your back. Which animal hasn’t beaten dogs on any measure of intelligence? Apologies, but it’s the cat. Should you act like “top dog” to maintain control? No, and you’re better off displaying your friendliness. What is the most intelligent breed? As it happens, breed doesn’t matter – though other factors do .

Starting with a landmark discovery in 1995 by evolutionary anthropologist Brian Hare, a wunderkind who now leads the field, scientists have learned how dogs think. Then, Hare proved that his family’s dog was not only cleverer than any fox but also cleverer than any chimp. Now, Hare and science writer Vanessa Woods share all of the secrets of dogs’ uniquely evolved intelligence, what makes your dog a genius, and how to understand your dog’s world.

Praise for Brian Hare:

“Brian Hare’s research on dogs, wolves, and great apes has been a game changer. Hare’s delightfully simple yet powerful studies demonstrate that our best friends have a lot to say.” Richard Wrangham, author of Catching Fire

BRIAN HARE is Assistant Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at Duke University whose research on “dognition” has been published in the leading journals. VANESSA WOODS writes for BBC Wildlife and New Scientist. Together, they are cofounders of Canines Inc, a dog intelligence testing and training website to be launched in January 2013.

> Dogs are geniuses when it comes to understanding gestures and words – they outsmart chimpanzees by every measure taken so far. In fact, several dogs have learned over a thousand words, and dogs can learn new words well into adulthood. Dogs pick up vocabulary in a way that is similar to human infants, inferring that new words belong to new objects, and even sorting words into categories (“my toys” versus “not toys”) without training.

> Dogs are remarkable communicators. They growl, bark, wag, nod, and use other vocalizations and visuals to “talk” with us and each other. We hear what dogs say, and can tell when they’re barking at a stranger rather than a squirrel.

> Dogs are remarkable problem solvers. Because dogs are social creatures, they can solve a whole host of problems by watching someone else (human or dog) solve it first. They’re great at understanding the point of view of their audience and recruiting help – from humans most of all.

> Dogs are dunces about physics. Dogs are bewildered by connectivity (which is partly why they can get tangled around a tree if you tie them to one with a leash). Wolves are much better at detours and obstacles, and rats are much better at navigation. Most dogs cannot find their way home if they are lost, despite what you’ve heard on the news.

THE GREAT TAX ROBBERYHow Britain Became a Tax Haven for Fat Cats and Big Business

Richard BrooksA leading journalist and former tax-inspector shows how Britain’s richest companies and most famous celebrities rob us of billions

As we are assured that “there are no alternatives” to severe cuts in public spending and that “we are all in this together”, Private Eye journalist and former tax-inspector Richard Brooks reveals the scandalous proliferation of tax avoidance among Britain’s fatcats and how new measures from successive governments actually make it easier. From offshore companies in Luxembourg to deliberate exploitation of developing countries, Brooks shows how a host of high street names – including Vodafone, Barclays, Topshop, and Boots – legally circumvent tax despite multibillion pound profits.

Unpicking the loopholes and bonuses that bankers and celebrities like Jimmy Carr have used to reduce their tax burden, this is a shocking exposé of how the richest deprive the state coffers of billions – leaving us to pick up the bill.

Former tax-inspector RICHARD BROOKS is a columnist for Private Eye and The Guardian, and with David Craig was co-author of the bestselling Plundering the Public Sector. In 2008 he was awarded the Paul Foot Award for Investigative Journalism, presented by Ian Hislop.

GULPAdventures on the Alimentary Canal

Mary RoachThe bestselling author of Stiff takes on the curious, hilarious intersection of delight and disgust that is eating (and what comes after)

Eating is the most pleasurable, gross, necessary, unspeak-able biological process we humans undertake. But very few of us realize what strange wet miracles of science operate inside us during and after every meal – let alone ponder the results (of the research). Which study set off worries in the Vatican that nuns might get around Lenten fasts by taking beef broth “backwards”? Was self-styled “nutritional econ-omist” Horace Fletcher right to persuade millions of people that chewing a bite of shallot 700 times would yield double the vitamins? And did Elvis actually die from constipation? In her trademark, laugh-out-loud style, Mary Roach breaks bread with spit connoisseurs and enema exorcists, stomach slugs, rectum-examining prison guards, and competitive hot dog eaters (how much can you eat before your stomach bursts?) – as she investigates the beginning, and end, of our food.

A patient, referred to only as A.O. Sutalf, is documented in the

august pages of the New England Journal of Medicine. Mr Sutalf, his identity

a closely guarded secret, passed gas an average of thirty-four times a day.

By comparison, the average lactose-tolerating adult will toot on average

no more than twenty-two times, peaking twice during the day: five hours

after lunch and five hours after dinner. One person at the lab that makes

Beano, the world’s bestselling anti-gas supplement, maintained that the

5 p.m. peak was man-made: “You’ve been holding it in at work, and as

soon as you get in the car to drive home, you let it out.”

Whereupon Alan Kligerman, the man whose company patented

Beano, frowned. “This is not a humorous subject.”

Why not just avoid legumes and other gas-making foods? After

Kligerman left the table for a moment, I challenged the team at the lab

to provide a single instance of a human being forced to eat beans; they

came back with “refried bean tasters”. They do exist, and they have called

Beano’s hotline.

When Kligerman returned, he was carrying what looked like a crisps

bag with a snorkel apparatus at one end. He explained that he needed to

get a baseline reading before I ate my beans. He handed the device to me.

“When you do your blows – ” It was unlike Kligerman to employ slang in

reference to flatus. It quickly became clear that the snorkelly thing,

like any snorkelly thing, went in the mouth, not the rectum. I was

both relieved and disappointed.

Hamzi, eleven years old with short, cropped hair,

baggy jeans, and a mischievous grin, stood a distance

away as I pulled the Rubik’s Cube from my bag.

“When I was a child, I was given this puzzle as a gift,”

I said, more to the family than to him. “But I could

never solve it, and so I would peel off the stickers,

re-arrange them, and show the solved cube to friends

WHAT DO YOU BUY THE CHILDREN OF THE TERRORIST WHO TRIED TO KILL YOUR WIFE?A Memoir of Jerusalem

David Harris-GershonIn this unflinching, mesmerizing literary debut, a man seeks out the Hamas bomber who changed his family’s life

David Harris-Gershon and his wife, Jamie, moved to Jerusalem full of hope. Then, in the midst of the his-toric cease-fire with the Palestinians, a bomb shrieked through Hebrew University’s cafeteria. Jamie was hurled across the room, her body sliced with shrap-nel; the friends she was sitting with were killed. David was desperate for answers: why now? why here? why my wife? But when a doctor handed him some shrap-nel removed from Jamie’s body, he refused to accept that this piece of metal made him “one of us” – a forever-trau-matized victim. Instead, he dug into government records to expose what triggered the attack, then returned to Israel to meet the Hamas terrorist and his family.

Part memoir, part investigation, this fearless debut con-fronts the personal costs of the Israel-Palestinian conflict – and the capacity for recovery and reconciliation.

DAVID HARRIS-GERSHON is a popular online columnist on Israeli-Palestinian issues for Tikkun magazine, the Jerusalem Post, and Daily Kos, the most active and most-read progressive politics website in the world. He received his MFA from the University of North Carolina and his essays and creative writing have been published in numerous venues. He now lives in Pennsylvania, and this is his first book.

THE TROUBLE WITH BILLIONAIRESHow the Super-Rich Hijacked the World (and How We Can Take it Back)

Linda McQuaig and Neil BrooksThe internationally bestselling attack on the mega-wealthy comes to the UK

In this blistering polemic, McQuaig and Brooks combine satirical bite with impeccable research to argue that ever-increasing income inequality is the product of a global legal and economic system that has been rigged by the wealthi-est, with disastrous consequences for the rest of us. From wild financial speculation to failing health systems, this in-cisive and lively book maintains that it is time for society to fight back.

Arguing that instead of “austerity” – a strategy the authors decry as a flawed effort to shore up a failing economic paradigm – we should tackle tax havens, patent law, and lax regulation, this is a rousing clarion call to arms, which points to a simple solution worth fighting for: tax the rich, they deserve it!

Emily AnthesDolly the sheep was just the start. Meet the high-tech menagerie of the near future, as scientists reinvent the animal kingdom

Fluorescent fish that glow near pollution. Robot-armoured beetles that military handlers can send on spy missions. Beloved pets resurrected from DNA. Scientists have already begun to create these high-tech hybrids to serve human whims and needs. What if a cow could be engineered to no longer feel pain – should we design a herd that would as-suage guilt over eating meat?

Popular science writer Emily Anthes travels around the globe to see how humans are inventing the fauna of the future, from the Roslin Institute, Dolly’s Scottish birthplace, where scientists are trying to clone an endangered mountain lion, to a “pharm” where chickens are modified to lay eggs laced with cancer-fighting drugs. EUROPEAN AESTHETICSA Critical Introduction from Kant to Derrida

Robert L. WicksThe only book to cover the evolution of one of the most important areas of continental philosophy

In this seminal study, Robert L. Wicks provides a sweeping survey of European aesthetics over the last two hundred years. Presenting the theories of sixteen important con-tinental thinkers including Kant, Nietzsche, Freud, and Derrida, this is the only comprehensive study of the evolu-tion of continental thought in this key area of philosophy.

Highlighting European ambivalence towards reason in the aftermath of the inhumanity of the French Revolu-tion, Wicks shows how each philosopher deals with the tension between the ideals of scientific rationalism on one side and creativity and human instinct on the other. Should art be evaluated objectively in terms of its form and dimensions, or should we value it because of how it makes us feel? With colour photographs and written in a lively but objective tone, this book will prove essential for students of philosophy and art theory.

ROBERT L. WICKS is associate professor of philosophy at the University of Auckland. He has written books on Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Kant and is a regular contributor to the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism.

“A masterful survey. Succinct, lucid and replete with illuminating illustrations and comparisons, the book makes complex theories accessible for non-experts. Bold and compelling.” Kathleen Higgins, Professor of Philosophy, University of Texas at Austin

THE FIFTH DIMENSIONAn Exploration of the Spiritual Realm

John HickThe case for a bigger, more complete picture of reality in which a fifth, spiritual dimension plays a central role

Many of us today are all too willing to accept a humanist and scientific account of the universe which considers human existence as a fleeting acci-dent. The triumph of John Hick’s gripping work is his exposure of the radical insufficiency of this view. Drawing on mystical and religious traditions ancient and modern, and spiritual thinkers as diverse as Julian of Norwich and Mahatma Ghandi, he has produced a tightly argued and thoroughly readable case for a fuller understanding of our reality, that appreciates the importance of a fifth, spiritual dimension.

THE PARTICLE AT THE END OF THE UNIVERSEThe Hunt for the Higgs Boson and the Discovery of a New World

Sean CarrollThis is the greatest science story of our time – riveting and irresistible

It was the universe’s most elusive particle, the linchpin for everything scientists dreamed up to explain how physics works. It had to be found. But projects as big as CERN’s Large Hadron Collider don’t happen without conniving, incredible risks, and occasional skullduggery. Sean Carroll reveals the insight, rivalry, and wonder that fuelled the Higgs search, and explores why this particle holds the potential to change the world – much as the electron ushered in the age of nuclear energy and quantum computing. While the first sighting of the infamously named “God particle” essentially solves the riddle of why matter has mass, it also opens a door into the mind-boggling domain of dark matter and other phenomena we never predicted. Told with unparalleled ambition, authority, and access to the competing research teams, this is the definitive, behind-the-scenes account of the landmark discovery of the Higgs boson.

SEAN CARROLL is the author of the critically acclaimed From Eternity to Here (978-1-85168-795-4) and a theoretical physicist at the California Insti-tute of Technology. His papers on dark matter, dark energy, the physics of extra dimensions, and alternative theories of gravity have been widely praised. He is also one of the founders of cosmicvariance.com, named one of the top five science blogs by Nature, and a TV presenter.

Praise for Sean Carroll’s From Eternity to Here:
