Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells that lie on the outermost layer of the skin to make way for new, younger skin cells. It also relieves dry skin and can have anti-aging effects. There are four types of exfoliation: physical, chemical, mechanical and energy. Skin type and conditions determines which type of exfoliation a person should use.

• Physical exfoliationPhysical exfoliation is the use of a

product containing abrasive ingredients that remove the topmost layer of the epidermis. Ingredients such as sugar, salt, man-made micro beads, and finely ground up seeds, nuts and grains are often used. This form of exfoliation, when used properly, brings benefits to most skin types. Gentle physical exfoliants are best for sensitive, acne-prone, rosacea-prone, or mature, thinned skin.

• chemical exfoliationChemical exfoliation relies on the power of ingredients to soften and divide the skin into thin layers. Acid peels and enzymes fall into this category. Acid peels work due to acidity, which is measured by pH. The pH in the peel weakens the bonds that connect skin cells, and in turn, will induce peeling. Your skincare professional can correctly match the proper peel to your skin type to minimize downtime and maximize results. Very sensitive skin types should not use acid peels. Enzyme exfoliants are bio-active components. Enzymes are typically extracted from fruits. Enzymes have the ability to detach and digest dead protein, which is what rough or dead cells are. They are generally safe because they do not over exfoliate the skin. Since enzymes are non-abrasive and not sensitizing, it is recommended for all skin types especially those who cannot tolerate acid peels. The only contraindication would be those who are allergic to the active components, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

• mechanical exfoliationMechanical Exfoliation is the use of a device on the skin to remove dead skin cells. An oscillating brush is one form of mechanical exfoliation. It uses sonic technology to move back and forth, creating a shearing action on the skin. A soft brush limits abrasion on the skin, and it’s important to change the brush head frequently to replace worn or frayed brush fibers, and to maintain a microbe-free environment. Microdermabrasion is a second method. Microdermabrasion uses a wand with a small abrasive tip, or crystals, while continuously applying suction to remove the freed cells. The use of a crystal free microdermabrasion system allows closer exfoliation to the eyes and mouth because there is no risk of stray crystals causing damage or being ingested. Microdermabrasion tips vary in size and coarseness, allowing skincare professionals to manipulate the amount of exfoliation. These methods are recommended for all skin types; however, minimal and careful usage is recommended for sensitive, acne, rosacea or thinned, mature skin.

• energy exfoliationLaser skin resurfacing uses light waves to stimulate the skin’s natural healing process and will increase collagen production in the skin. There are many different types of lasers that can impact the skin in different ways. Some lasers remove all or part of the epidermal layers. This is called laser ablation. It stimulates the body’s healing response to diminish lines, wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, sun damage and other visible imperfections on the outer skin. Other lasers reach into the lower layer of the skin, the dermis, to stimulate collagen production, giving the skin more elasticity. Some lasers do both. Downtime varies with each laser depending on how aggressive treatments are, or the type of condition that is being treated. Skin color and skin condition will be a determining factor in which laser is appropriate to use.

exfoliation: what is it and which method is right for you?

The healthier the foods are that you consume, the better your skin will look.

Eating a balanced diet is the best way to get your share of good food for healthy skin.

Low-fat dairy, cooked sweet potatoes, carrots, kale; fresh romaine lettuce, dried apricots, cantaloupe, sweet red peppers, mangos and tuna

One of the most important components of skin health is vitamin A. Vitamin A is required for normal cell growth and development and it also helps boost immune function.

Blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and plumsThe high antioxidant content in these four fruits ranked highest “total antioxidant capacity” of any food in an article published recently by the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Antioxidants and other phytochemicals can protect the cell so there is less chance for damage. Protecting cells from damage helps guard against premature aging. Other fruits and vegetables that ranked high in the recent study include artichokes, beans (red, black, and pinto), prunes, and pecans.

Salmon, walnuts, canola oil, and flax seedThese foods deliver fatty acids that are responsible for healthy cell membranes that act as barriers to harmful cellular damage. Healthy cell membranes also act as gate keepers for nutrients to cross in and out and for waste products to enter and exit the cell. Cell membranes hold water in. The stronger that barrier, the better your cells can hold moisture. That means plumper, younger looking skin. Essential fatty acids offer protection to inflammatory processes that can harm arteries, cause heart disease and harm skin cells. The best-known fatty acids are omega 3 and omega 6. Many people lack omega 3s which are in fish, walnuts, and flax seed oil.

healthy foods for your skin: you are what you eat Healthy Oils

Eating healthy oils helps keep skin lubricated and keeps it looking and feeling healthier overall. The oils to look for are labeled cold pressed, expeller pressed, or extra virgin. When oil is commercially pressed one of the first things they do is add solvents and raise the oil to really high temperatures. Then the oil is put through five or six processes where important nutrients are lost. Experts remind us: any fat, even a healthy one, is high in calories and we do not need more than two tablespoons a day.

Whole-wheat bread, muffins and cerealsturkey, tuna and brazil nuts

The mineral selenium is found in all these foods. Selenium plays a key role in the health of skin cells. Researchers at Edinburgh University showed that when levels of selenium were high, skin cells were less likely to suffer free radical damage that can increase the risk of cancer. French researchers found that oral doses of selenium, along with copper, vitamin E and vitamin A could prevent sunburn in human skin.

Green Tea and WaterThe polyphenols in green tea have anti-inflammatory properties. Green tea is protective to the cell membrane and may help prevent or reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Good, clean water will keep your body and your skin hydrated which automatically leaves skin looking better. Water helps move nutrients in and toxins out of your cells. When we are properly hydrated, we sweat more efficiently. Doing so helps keep skin clean and clear.

Warning! A diet containing lots of sugar or other refined carbohydrates can accelerate aging.

What about supplements? The ideal way to get the nutrients you need for a radiant complexion is eating a healthy, balanced diet. As we age, it is harder for our bodies to get what they need from a normal diet. Probiotics can help ensure nutrients get absorbed. Vitamins and antioxidants can be recommended, as well.
