The Beacon The Beacon August August August August 2012 2012 2012 2012 Volume 8, Number 3 President’s Message Again this year we are losing members due to poor health or lack of usage of the Club. It is imperative that we replace these former members AND add a net of about 18 this year to make our budget. How can we do this? It will take time and effort from EACH of us. We need to constantly “talk up” the City Club. If you had a great dinner, mention it enthusiastically to your friends. If you had fun with one of the Signature Groups, tell your friends about it. Don’t keep all of the great things and the great times we have as members a secret! Share them! Remember to make a list of your acquaintances you think might be interested in the City Club and give their contact information to Kat or Emilia for our list of potential members. Also put them on your email list as a group to whom you will send the flyers about our Lunch & Learns or other events open to the public. You can bring a guest to the Club for bridge or a Signature Group three times in a year. You can bring a guest to the Club for lunch or dinner ANY number of times in a year. JUST DO IT!! We have a new brochure available to give to your prospective members. Our web address is in this brochure. Encourage them to go to our website to learn a lot about the Club and see photos of some of our activities. Kat or Emilia can tell them about the membership categories if you are not comfortable doing so. Offer them a tour of the Club – or let me know if there is sufficient interest and we can arrange a tour a couple of times a month for prospective members. And remember, there is a reward for each member you bring to the Club! $100 off of your account when they join and credit you with having influenced them to join, and another $100 off your account when they rejoin the Club after their first anniversary. Another way you can help is to let me know of other groups you belong to who might be interested in putting me on their agenda to talk about the City Club. Unfortunately, we are one of the best kept secrets in town. I will either go personally, or one of the other Officers of the Club will make the presentation. We also need to engage our existing members in our activities. Offer to bring a member to the Club who may not feel comfortable coming alone, or driving at night. Get a group up for dinner at the Club and a movie. Invite several to join you for lunch some day when you are planning to come! We are making strides to become better known in the community, but we need each one of you to help. Let me know if you have other ideas to suggest, too. And THANK YOU for maintaining your membership and caring about the City Club. It is each of you who makes membership so valuable! We had a GREAT turnout for the Picnic in the Swiss Alps on July 20. Check out the pictures on the website. You will want to be certain to make your reservation for the Lobster Boil on August 17. My mouth is already watering for the baked Lobster Tails with drawn butter! And there are plenty of good things to eat on the menu besides Lobster! Eh!! Susan M. The Latest from the Bridge Club… Before our scheduled bridge session on June 15 we enjoyed a violin performance by Neel French (Gargi’s son) accompanied by Shirley Daly on piano. We thank them for sharing their musical expertise. All in attendance thoroughly enjoyed it and we invite them to play for us again whenever they wish. Reminder− the City Club will be hosting NAP (North American Pairs) qualifying games on August 3, 7 and 20. These games are open to the public – therefore invite a friend to play. The larger the attendance the more points available. Let’s make these games hugely successful. Pat Benevento, Bridge Chair

Flea Market This summer is turning out to be a scorcher! We hope our fellow members are staying cool! What better time to stay indoors and sort the closets and cupboards that you've been meaning to clean out. The Flea Market needs your linens, books, dishes, cookware, glassware, garden cast-offs, electronics (no TVs or monitors), collectibles/antiques, art, jewelry and assorted what-nots. With your help we can make this our best sale ever! We will be marking on Monday, August 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the White Room. We love welcoming new people. It's fun and a casual opportunity to meet some great members! You can come for an hour before bridge or stay all day. No experience is necessary. Stop by and see what the Flea Market is all about.

Garden Club Day Trip The Garden Club will be traveling to Leila Arboretum in Battle Creek on Thursday, August 23. We will tour the Children’s Garden and the Kingman Museum of Natural History. Afterwards, we will travel to downtown Marshall for lunch at Win Schuler’s. Marshall has many antique and specialty shops, a 1.6 mile river walk along the Kalamazoo River, and a National Historic Landmark District. Brochures will be available for a self-guided walking tour as well as shopping guides. We will meet in the Club parking lot at 9 a.m. to carpool to Battle Creek. This day trip is open to all City Club members. If interested, please contact Linda Atkins at 734.741.8032 or email [email protected].

Sculpture Tour of U-M Main Campus On Wednesday, August 15, there will be a walk from the Cube (next to the Union) and circling around from the Martha Cook Residence Hall, to the League, Rackham, and back by way of Angell Hall. Ann Rubin will lead the group to see some of her favorite sculptures. She is a well-known sculptor who studied under John Pappas. She has a Master's Degree in Art from the U-M, and her most recent work is a bronze waterfall outside the Kellogg Eye Center. The walk will be about a mile and will cost $20. The tour will end at the Union, where we will lunch at the University Club (cost not included!). We will carpool from the City Club, leaving promptly at 9:30 a.m. and park in the lot behind the Union. Tour will start at 10 a.m. Please send check to Jacqueline Lewis at 1962 Boulder Drive, AA, 48104. Phone: 677.0756. Reservation deadline is August 1, and the maximum number of participants is 20.
