Why Study Aging?
• 35 million Americans are 65 or older – 1 in 8 or 12.4% of the population
• Projected increase:– 40 million in 2010
– 55 million in 2020
– 71.5 million in 2030 (double from 2000) • Persons reaching age 65 have an average life
expectancy of an additional 18.5 years (19.8 years for females and 16.8 years for males)
