  • What do we mean by the term ‘internet safety’, and why do we need to know about it?

The internet is an amazing invention. Since going ‘live’ in the UK in the early 90’s, the internet has revolutionised almost every aspect of our lives. From the way that we shop and access the news, to the way that we communicate with others, the internet is an endless source of information that we can all access at any time. This incredible tool has many wonderful benefits, but there are also dangers that we all need to be aware of.

Our world is more connected than ever before. It’s likely that your parents and older family members have contacts on social media from all over the world! These days it’s common in the workplace to have international business meetings with colleagues from across the globe. Unfortunately, as we have become more connected online, we also expose ourselves to new dangers. The internet is literally full of malicious software such as malware, trojans and computer viruses. These programs are created with the sole intention of causing harm, either by spying and stealing sensitive information, or in severe cases by literally holding companies to ransom. In addition to malicious software, there are also online criminals who try to trick or cause harm to people online.

The good news is that protecting yourself online is actually pretty easy. It all boils down to one thing: protecting your data.

So what do we mean by data, and why do I need to protect myself online?

Data is just another word for information. It could be your name, age, telephone number or address. It might be your likes, dislikes, hobbies and interests. It may relate to sensitive financial information such as your bank details, or your passwords to online marketplaces. All of this information is a weapon if you allow it to be accessed by criminals online. Scammers often try to trick people into sharing this information so that they can steal their money, buy things without their consent, or clone their identity. This is known as identity theft and it enables criminals to pretend to be you online. This could result in thousands of pounds of debt (borrowed money) being assigned to your name, and in some cases, victims end up being wrongfully arrested after a criminal has committed crimes in their name.

Another important danger to be aware of is online predators. Online predators are individuals who often pretend to be a child or teenager, but are in fact highly dangerous. Over a period of weeks, months, and in some cases years, an online predator will build a rapport or ‘friendship’ with their victims. After many months of interaction, an online predator may begin to coerce (forcefully persuade) a victim into behaving in a way that is inappropriate or puts them in danger. This could include being asked to meet up ‘IRL’ or in real life. This is why it is so important that we take steps to protect our data, and report any unwanted, or inappropriate online contact as soon as it happens.

  • How can I protect my data online?

There are many ways that we can protect our data online, such as ensuring that the equipment we are using is properly maintained. This includes installing all updates and ensuring that your computer has both a robust firewall and good quality anti-virus protection. The other ways that we can protect ourselves relate to our behaviour. This means that we are careful about who we communicate with, and we never give out personal information. Another way that we can protect our data is by ensuring that we use strong online passwords. You need to choose a password that is at least 10 characters long and ideally contains a mixture of both capital and lowercase letters, one or more numbers and a ‘special character’ such as a currency sign or hashtag. You should also ensure that you use a variety of passwords, as using the same one over and over again leaves you vulnerable to being hacked.

Many social media platforms require users to be a minimum age of 13 before having an account. Having said this, many children have been known to access sites such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Tik-Tok when they are underage. If this applies to you, you must take steps to protect yourself. Never accept a friend request from someone that you do not know, and always apply the highest possible privacy settings to your profile.

So what are the warning signs of danger online?

As a general rule, you should never engage in a conversation online with someone that you do not know. Also, you must always seek your parent or guardian’s permission before accepting a new friend request. Here is a list of warning signs that could indicate danger online:

    • Messages or friend requests from someone that you do not know• Questions about personal information such as your name, age or address• Someone taking a real interest in you and paying you lots of compliments• Someone who avoids showing their face, for example on a video call • Being asked to say or do things that make you feel scared or unsafe• Being asked to send money or buy things for someone online• Requests to send photos or images of yourself• Being asked to keep a secret or delete messages• Being asked to chat in private• Being asked to meet in real life

If you are concerned about online predators, feel unsafe or want more information, you must speak to a trusted adult. This could be a parent, guardian, or teacher. Many messaging sites now offer a reporting function if you are worried. Alternatively, you can contact CEOP online by visiting www.ceop.police.uk

  • Online Behaviour

Online predators and scams are not the only risks that we need to be aware of online. Quite often, people forget that their words and actions online carry the same consequences as they would in ‘real life’. It is very important that we think before we type or share something that we may regret later. Watch the video, then complete the mind map and activity below.
