UNIT 1: LIFE ENERGY
ACTIVITY 1: Leaf reaction when exposed to sunlight
MATERIALS
Leaf exposed to sunlight
bleaching solution
2 pieces lter paper (9cm x 15cm)
Masing tape
!ammer
"odine solution
2 petri dishes#ar of water
$orceps
%ropper
2 pieces &in'l tile (1cm x 15 cm)
leaf from the same plan co&ered fromsunlight
Procedure
1 #oin two pieces of &in'l tile along one side with masing tape to mae lterpaper holder
2 *ut the exposed leaf between 2 pieces of lter paper and insert the wholething in the lter paper holder
+ ,lose the folder -ith a hammer. pound it about 1 times o&er the areawhere the leaf is

7ll organisms need energ' which the get from the food the' eat
hrough the process of photos'nthesis. plants and other chloroph'll bearingorganisms produce food for themsel&es. which is a&ailed of b' other li&ing
forms *hotos'nthesis occurs in the chloroplasts found in their lea&es
hree ma3or steps in photos'nthesis are:8 ,apture of energ' from sunlight b' chloroph'll molecules8 ,on&ersion of light energ' to chemical energ'8 torage of chemical energ' into glucose sugar from 7* 7;%
;7%*!
Potos(ntesisis the process b' which plants. some bacteria and someprotistans use the energ' from sunlight to produce glucose from carbondioxide and water his glucose can be con&erted into p'ru&ate whichreleases adenosine triphosphate (7*) b' cellular respiration water glucose > ox'gen
7s light intensit' increases. the rate of the light8dependent reaction. andtherefore photos'nthesis generall'. increases proportionatel' 7s light
intensit' is increased howe&er. the rate of photos'nthesis is e&entuall'limited b' some other factor ,hloroph'll a is used in both photos'stems hewa&elength of light is also important *" absorbs energ' most e?cientl' at4 nm and *"" at nm Light with a high proportion of energ'concentrated in these wa&elengths will produce a high rate ofphotos'nthesis
7n increase in the carbon dioxide concentration increases the rate at whichcarbon is incorporated into carboh'drate in the light8independent reactionand so the rate of photos'nthesis generall' increases until limited b' anotherfactor
*hotos'nthesis is dependent on temperature "t is a reaction catal'sed b'en@'mes 7s the en@'mes approach their optimum temperatures the o&erall
rate increases 7bo&e the optimum temperature the rate begins to decreaseuntil it stops
