USADA MAKES CASE AT ROUND TABLEBy Tom LaMarra
Edwin Moses, chairman of the United States An-
ti-Doping Agency, had 122 consecutive victories
over a decade as a track-and-field athlete and won
gold medals at the 1976 and 1984 Olympics. He did it
without coaches.
"It was my passion for the sport and doing it the
right way," he said at The Jockey Club Round Table
conference Aug. 9. "Imagine what it would be like to
be (both) the horse and the jockey."
Moses spoke at the Round Table conference in
Saratoga Springs, N.Y., to explain what USADA, which
he called an independent organization, could do for
Thoroughbred racing in regard to oversight of equine
medication policies, drug testing, and enforcement.
USADA would be appointed to such a task should
federal legislation pushed by The Jockey Club and
supported by the Coalition for Horse Racing Integrity
win approval. The legislation faces industry hurdles;
major horsemen's groups and racetracks haven't
bought into the concept. They do, however, favor
continued state-by-state adoption of the National
Uniform Medication Program. BH

FASIG-TIPTON SARATOGA MONDAY HIPS TO WATCH A sampling of horses to watch at Monday night's opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling auction.
GRADE I WINNER MORENO RETIRED Southern Equine Stable's homebred grade I winner Moreno has been retired, trainer Eric Guillot said Aug. 9, a day after he finished eighth in the Whitney Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course.
AIR FORCE BLUE FLIES TO KEENELAND PHOENIX WIN Trainer Aidan O'Brien's Air Force Blue, a Kentucky-bred son of War Front, turned the tables on familiar rival Buratino and won the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes (Ire-I) for 2-year-olds Aug. 9 at the Curragh.

MICROCHIPS TO BEGIN WITH 2017 FOALSBy Eric Mitchell
Thoroughbred identification is entering a new
era with the announcement Aug. 9 that all foals
must have microchip implants as part of registra-
tion beginning in 2017.
"The advancement to DNA typing 14 years ago
is a good example of where technology improved
reliability and efficiency," said Rick Bailey, registrar
for The Jockey Club, during a presentation at the
63rd Annual Round Table Conference. "Microchip
should be the same for Thoroughbred identifica-
tion."
Besides transmitting an identification number
when queried by a scanner, Bailey said software is
available that can display more information about
the horse, which may include pedigree, racing per-
formance, and health information.
Microchips are small glass-encased transmit-
ters. A veterinarian inserts the device via a nee-
dle, typically into the left side of the neck midway
between the poll and the withers and about two
inches down from the mane. The Jockey Club will
pay for the cost of the microchips, and there will
be no change in the fees for registration, according
to Bailey. BH

LAST CALL FOR UNBRIDLED'S SONGSBy Eric Mitchell
Yearling buyers get their last shot at the offspring of
Unbridled's Song this year. Eight of the top stallion's
last crop of 73 have been cataloged to the Fasig-Tipton
Saratoga select yearling sale Aug. 10-11.
Buyers'
attitudes
toward the
final crop of
a deceased
stallion go
one of two
ways: Either
buyers snap
up the last
offerings be-
cause they've
become a
scarce commodity, or they pay less attention because
the sire is no longer foremost in their minds.
"There may be a sense that there is no more blue
sky because the horse is gone," said Mark Taylor of
Taylor Made Farm, which foaled and eventually stood
Unbridled's Song at stud. "One thing about Unbridled's
Song, however, is that he never let us down; he regular-
ly put a good-looking horse on the ground."
Taylor also noted that some of Unbridled's Song's
best sons—Will Take Charge, Cross Traffic, Graydar,
Emcee, and Mission Impazible —are just getting started
at stud. "His legacy is far from over," Taylor said. BH
BODEMEISTER COMES FULL CIRCLEBy Ian Tapp
In 2010 Brookdale Sales sold an Empire Maker—
Untouched Talent yearling colt for breeder Audley
Farm. Later named Bodemeister, the colt became a
grade I winner and ran one of the most impressive
losing efforts ever in the Kentucky Derby. Five years
later, Brookdale's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga consignment
includes a Bodemeister colt (Hip 81) from the same
Virginia property.
"This will be the first Bodemeister from Audley Farm
offered at auction, so it's a nice second chapter for the
horse," Brookdale's Joe Seitz said. "The Bodemeisters
started off really well last year as weanlings and they've
continued to sell well as yearlings."
Brookdale
has one other
colt in its
Saratoga con-
signment, Hip
154, a chestnut
son of Union
Rags, also for
breeder
Audley Farm.
"He's a nice,
well-conformed, athletic horse; lots of energy and very
correct," Seitz said. "They're both very similar types,
actually. They were raised at a farm that raises really
good horses. They all come out with good condition—
perfect athletes for the future." BH

HAYDENS RIDING 'LUCKY' STREAKBy Eric Mitchell
Ontario owner/breeders Jay and Christine Hayden
are on a roll and hoping their good fortune car-
ries through their first foray selling at the Fasig-Tip-
ton Saratoga select yearling sale.
The couple, who bred Prince of Wales Stakes
winner Breaking Lucky, has two horses consigned
with Bernard McCormack's Cara Bloodstock. This is
also McCormack's first Saratoga consignment since
he formed his own bloodstock agency in 2008. Mc-
Cormack is the former general manager of Canada's
once-powerful Windfields Farm breeding operation.
The Haydens are offering Hip 41, an Unbridled's
Song—Banga Ridge colt, and Hip 77, a Speights-
town—Endless Journey filly. The Unbridled's Song
colt is a half brother to the first homebred they raced
as owners, Unspurned, who is Banga Ridge's first
foal. The Haydens decided to race her after twice
buying her back as a yearling. With Hall of Fame
conditioner Roger Attfield, Unspurned has won two
stakes, including the grade III Whimsical Stakes this
year, placed in seven other stakes, and earned nearly
$490,000. BH

DILGER PLEASED WITH SARATOGA DRAFTBy Ian Tapp
Dromoland Farm's Gerry Dilger was upbeat Aug.
9 after watching Nyquist, an Uncle Mo colt Dro-
moland sold last year as a yearling for $230,000, win
the Best Pal Stakes (gr. II) at Del Mar the day before.
Dilger was also pleased to see a Bernardini filly—Ca-
vorting—win the grade I Test Stakes on the same day,
since he has a Bernardini filly of his own, Hip 206, in
his Fasig-Tipton Saratoga consignment.
"She is
lovely," Dilger
said in his Irish
accent. "She's
a medium- to
good-sized,
attractive,
good-walking
filly. All four of
my horses are
doing as well.
They're show-
ing well, and
there are plenty of people around."
Dromoland's consignment also includes a Harlan's
Holiday colt (Hip 188) and two Bodemeister yearlings,
a filly (Hip 2) and a colt (Hip 38).
"So far, what I've seen of Bodemeister's stock, I re-
ally like them," he said. "I know there are good horses
on the grounds here, but I don't look at other people's
horses. I just worry about mine." BH
PROSPECT PARK TAKES TO THE TURFBy Jeremy Balan
Trainer Cliff Sise got a good sense of how Prospect
Park would handle his first turf start in the Aug. 9 La
Jolla Handicap (gr. IIIT) when he sent out the Tapit colt
to work over the Del Mar grass for the first time July 26.
It wasn't just that his drill was a bullet at 1:00 2/5 for
five furlongs, but it was more than a full second ahead
of everyone else.
The workout turned out to be foreshadowing, as
Prospect Park drew clear to win the La Jolla Sunday by
4 1/4 lengths, giving him his first graded score.
A former Triple Crown hopeful with hard-earned
seconds to Dortmund in the San Felipe (gr. II) and
Gimme Da Lute in the Affirmed (gr. III) and Los Alamitos
Derby, it all finally came together for Prospect Park.
"This is one of those occasions where it's so good
to be right, because we've been so high on this horse
since I first breezed him," winning jockey Kent Deso-
rmeaux said. BH

NECROPSY DATABASE IN THE WORKSBy Tom LaMarra
The Jockey Club plans to expand on its Equine Injury
Database in the form of another database that will
compile information collected from racehorse necrop-
sies. Discussed during the recent Welfare and Safety
of the Racehorse Summit, the results of necropsies are
seen as a valuable tool in assessing at-risk racehorses.
The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Safety Committee at
the Aug. 9 Round Table conference in Saratoga Springs,
N.Y., also recommended that any horse on a racetrack
vet's list be subject to testing before it can be entered
to race. The vet's list, which is reserved for racehorses
identified as not being fit to race for a period of time,
is part of the EID, research from which suggests such
horses have a greater risk of injury in races.
The Jockey Club executive director Matt Iuliano
said the committee also recommends "that all medi-
cal records, therapeutic treatments, and diagnoses of
horses placed on the vet's list are thoroughly reviewed
by regulatory officials before returning to training and
competition." BH
BIG DATA MEETS HANDICAPPINGBy Eric Mitchell
A new partnership announced Aug. 9 between
Equibase and STATS holds great promise for
delivering innovative predictive modeling tools for
handicappers. STATS was formerly a data provider
of scores, statistics, and fantasy sports services. The
company acquired its analytical component by buying
Bloomberg Sports, which had developed quantitative
models and algorithms for STATS' real-time and his-
torical sports data. STATS continues to grow as part of
the Vista Equity Partners venture capital group, which
is aggregating leading data analytics companies.
What the partnership means for handicappers
is the potential for highly sophisticated predictive
handicapping tools. Horseplayers will be able to test
theories by back-testing against a range of races
then identify playable races using their criteria. The
fastest growing betting market overseas is in-event
wagering, which could come to the United States
with legalized exchange
wagering.
"Our clients can look
at our probabilities and
compare with the book-
maker odds to spot dif-
ferences in value," said
Bill Squadron, executive
vice president of stra-
tegic relationships for
STATS. BHBill Squadron of STATS

ANALYSIS
MARKETWATCH: SARATOGA PINHOOKSBy Madison Scott
Thirty-six of the 209 yearlings cataloged for
the Aug. 10-11 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale
were previously sold at public auction, the
majority as weanlings at last year's Keeneland
November sale. The top price was the $750,000
Roma Farm paid in November for the Tapit —
Ithinkisawapudycat filly, who is cataloged as Hip
156 and will be offered by Taylor Made Sales
Agency.
"She has a great neck and a good, laid-back
shoulder," Taylor Made's
John Hall said Aug. 9.
"She's a very athletic
filly with a great walk.
She's here to sell, and I
think she is going over
very well with the buyers
here."
Though a wide price
range exists among the
pinhook prospects at Sara-
toga (horses purchased for
as little as $25,000 are cat-
aloged), the average cost
for these horses increased
from 2014. This year's av-
erage acquisition price of $165,097 is 9.7% above
last year's $150,478 figure, reflecting a stronger
weanling market overall and more competition
among buyers for the good weanlings.
The Saratoga sale catalog of 209 yearlings is
27% larger than last year, and there is a slight
uptick in the proportion of pinhook prospects in
the overall catalog—17% in this year's sale versus
14% in 2014.
Pinhooked horses sold well at Saratoga last
year, averaging $311,063 with a median price
of $275,000. These figures were slightly better
than the overall sale totals: $291,965 average
and $237,500 median. The pinhooked group's
slightly lower RNA rate of 16% versus 19% over-
all likely reflects the pinhooker's desire to move
on with the investment.
Due to the nature of select sales, the mere
presence of pinhooked horses in the Saratoga
catalog suggests they have progressed well from
weanlings to yearlings, so it stands to reason
that their value should have increased. A review
of the rate of return from the 2014 sale con-
firms this: From 16 sold, every hip purchased as
a weanling or short yearling was profitable, av-
eraging a 79% ROR. The chart below shows the
distribution of pinhook prices in 2014-15. BH
