tive eyewear, meeting the ASTM F803 standard, whenever there are more

It seems like the summer has never arrived – no sooner were the OBA and Badminton Canada AGM’s finished than the OBA Board of Directors had a full day of planning to go over plans for the 2009/2010 season. It was a pleasure to welcome Jim Duncan and Deborah Tom to their first meeting after their election to the board at the AGM. Deborah will be looking after increas-ing OBA services to our Adult Members and Jim will be responsible for the Promo-tion and Media Awareness for the sport of Badminton. Basically we are looking at a very exciting year of badminton:

Ontario Badminton Association joins on as newest member of Humber College’s Centre of Excellence!
Badminton gaining popularity as an emerging sport The sport of badminton is on the rise. As one of the ‘emerging sports’ it is notably the most dominating in numbers. In the US, badminton is currently not an NCAA sanctioned champion-ship sport although with numbers increasing to that of other sanctioned sports, the NCAA will have to do some reconsidering. In order to that, it needs to have a certain number of schools participating , and of course has to dispel some mis-conceptions. "People see it as this non-threatening, backyard sport," he said. "But once you get into it, you see the physicality involved, the attack strategy. The Ontario Badminton Association is delighted to announce a partnership with Humber College in a sporting Centre of Excellence. For many years, the OBA has held events at Humber College with the Toronto Open a regular fixture, an exhibition featuring Danish players, and culminating in the December 2008 Exhibition with Hariawan, Engga Setiawan and Canadian players. Other tournaments have also taken place at Humber on a regular basis. Humber has formed a partnership to develop a Centre of Excellence—participating sports include the OBA, Ontario Basketball and Ontario Volleyball. Elite OBA athletes will be invited to train and receive athletic therapy services. The OBA will hold an increasing number of tournaments (national, provincial and other), clinics and camps at Humber and looks forward to this partnership developing the Centre of Excellence.

Ontario Players upset at the YONEX US Open
Several Ontario athletes pulled in a solid perform-ance at the US Open this past July. In the quarter finals of Men’s Singles, Andrew Dabeka defeated Joseph Rogers, where he then lost to Stefan Wojcikiewicz in the semi’s. In Women’s Singles, Mi-chelle Li upset the defending champion then lost in the semi’s to Mona Santosa of the US. In Mixed Doubles, Fionna McKee, playing with Will Milroy, lost in the semi final to Howard Bach and Eval Lee of the US. Other Ontario athletes at this event were Charmaine Reid, Tommy McKee, Kevin Li and Alex Bruce. Anna Rice from BC, won Women’s Singles.

OBA 2009 Awards Banquet Held at the Sandman Signature Hotel at Toronto Airport, the 2009 OBA Awards Banquet recognized achievements by athletes, clubs, coaches, officials and builders of the sport. The most prestigious award presented each year goes to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the sport and for 2009 this was presented to Doug Fox, Athletic Director at Humber College. Doug Fox (and his staff of Jim Bielak and Dean Wiley) have for many years supported the Ontario Badminton Association as we host events at Humber College (approximately two per year). In December 2008, the OBA with Humber College hosted exhibition play featuring Hariawan and Engga Setiawan. Doug ensured a great set up for the event. Humber College also hosted a most successful NCCA Championships, promoting badminton in Ontario and hosting teams from across the country. Our front cover shows Doug receiving his award. Humber College was also presented with the OBA Corporate Award for 2009 and, right, Doug and Jim receiving the Corporate Award from Pry Gnana, OBA Director for Marketing and the driving force behind the Exhibition. Each season, the OBA presents awards celebrat-ing achievements of athletes throughout the season. The OBA Championships’ Banner was won by the Mandarin Badminton Club, recogniz-ing their players results at the Ontario Champi-onships (A), the Ontario Masters Championships and the Ontario Junior Championships. The District Championships Cup (for results at the B Championships) was won by Toronto & District, and the Ontario Participation banner was won by Lee’s Badminton Training Centre. The SOTX Ontario Team Cup (for CDE level players) was won jointly by Eugene Lau and Kyle Wong of Ryerson and Maria Cheng and Bily Lau of Lee’s).

In 2008-2009, the OBA with Victor presented two new awards—for the best results at the Victor Ontario Circuit and for the players who competed at all the circuit events. The top two players were Cheryl Tanaka and Drew Huerter (see right), and also the only two players to compete at all events.

Athletes of the Year junior awards were based on overall achievement on points from the Ontario Junior Ranking System; for the U23 category based on results, and for the Master category, achieve-ments at the Provincial and National Championships. Awards went to:
U12: Samuel Goh (triple winner at Provincial Championships), Sommer Chou and Danica Lau jointly at the top of the table; U14: Bosco Lau and Michelle Tong; U16 Nyl Yakura and Jody Chan; U19 Saman Mahmoodzadeh and Michelle Li; U23 Joycelyn Ko, and Kevin Li and Tommy McKee. The Senior win-ners were Michelle Li and Andrew Dabeka and the Masters winners Penny Parkes and Ian Bishop.

Each year, the OBA President and the OBA District Presidents recognize contributions that members have made. Ottawa and District recognized Sylvain Coulombe and Ferdy Doreleyers for the contribu-tions to the District and Western recognized Cheng Chuang of the Lester B Pearson Badminton Club for his contribution. The OBA recognized Pry Gnana and Fred Carruthers for their contribution towards the very successful Exhibition held in December. The OBA also recognized Deryck Williams and Jamie McKee for their services to the Board of the Ontario Badminton Association. Deryck spoke of the achievements during his tenure as President and gave his best wishes to the future of Ontario badmin-ton.
The OBA also recognized the athletes who had been awarded Quest for Gold carding in 2008-2009 and recognized their achievements through the season. Also recognized, the athletes in attendance who achieved at the University and College events . The OBA Coach of the Year was Stephane Cadieux of the Badminton & Racquet Club, presented with his certificate and award by Dave Kumar, OBA Director—see right.
The OBA Officials of the Year were Lillian and John Cree (below), with a special award going to Asokan Sadasivan for his contribution as an official in Ontario. Our thanks too to John for the photographs.
The keynote speaker for the event was Wayne Macdonnell (see right) who spoke of his achievements internationally and nationally and what it took then and what it takes now to be a champion. Andrew Dabeka in 2009 equalled Wayne’s number of Canadian singles wins. Something to aim for Ontario singles players!
The OBA would like to thank Dave Kumar for his work in presenting the Awards Banquet and Jolande Amoraal for her table decorations—hanging shuttles.

Bracebridge Ontario hosts the OWG from 4-7 March 2010, with badminton at the Brace-bridge Sportsplex. Opening Ceremonies take place the evening of Thursday 4th on the waterfront in Gravenhurst. To compete for your District, contact your District President, OWG Coach or Manager, or watch for more information on your District website. To coach a district team, contact the District President - NCCP Level 2 certification required. Ottawa and District Badminton Association have announced their Coach and Manager so do contact them directly - Dan Leblanc (Coach), [email protected]. and Ann Rayner (Manager): [email protected]. The OWG is a team event - in 2008, Toronto & District Team 2 defeated Toronto & District Team 1, with the bronze medal position going to Western Ontario. The Black Knight fair play awards went to Ryan Van Spronsen WOBA (male athlete), Susie Yan NOBA (female athlete), Dave Wesley GBDBA (Coach) and Olga Gabroussenok ODBA (Manager). High Performance Programme The OBA is delighted to announce that Stephane Cadieux from the Badminton & Racquet Club will be the CWG 2011 Team Coach. Melissa Hill from Varsity Blues will be the Assistant Coach, and Deb Singer will be the Manager. Advance Notice: Christmas Camp 27-29 December at Hum-ber College. This will be the first camp for the 2011 Can-ada Winter Games team selection. Age eligibility: Male - athletes 23 and younger as at 31st December 2011, female - athletes 21 and younger as at 31st December 2011. By invitation - 70 athletes will be selected and invited to attend the camp (no charge, including shuttles and lunch) using the OJRS Rankings at the end of the season 2008-2009 from both U19 and U16 age groups and OUA and OCAA results. Other athletes are invited to apply to attend at a cost of $40 for the three days. Invitations will be final-ised in early October. From these athletes, a squad of 40 athletes will be selected for training through 2009-2011. Final team selection pro-cedure will be announced in due course.

Insurance – What It Means & Why It Is Important There are not many better ways to have fun, spend time with friends and get in shape than playing sports. Everyday the young and young-at-heart across Canada participate in sports as a way to keep active and spend time with friends. We tend to think about the fun and the competi-tion and not about the possibilities of something going wrong. Unfortunately things can happen. In sports we see injuries to people participating and to those who are watching. We also see property being damaged by those who are participating in sports. Insurance can help your sports group protect yourselves from the results of such mishaps. Insurance? How does that work? Insurance will protect you in the event of an incident. There are several types of insurance coverage. Each protects you in a different way.
Liability Insurance - will protect your club and its members if you are sued for bodily injury or property damage. A spectator or another player who is injured or the building owner could make a claim if his building has been damaged. They could sue your club or you as a player stating that your negligence caused the injury or damage. Liability insurance will defend you against the action and provide payouts up to the policy limits.
Directors & Officers/Wrongful Acts – protects your Directors & Officers, Executive, Employees & Volunteers in the event that you are sued for-compensatory damages as a result of wrongful acts.
Sport Accident Coverage - provides payments to a member who has been injured while playing sports. It is designed to cover out of pocket ex-penses for items such as dental treatments, prescription drugs, ambulance, physiotherapy, etc that are not covered under any other medical plan.
What if we don’t have insurance coverage?
If you did not have insurance you are leaving yourself and your club open to severe financial impact in the event of an incident. If a player is in-jured and they do not have their own medical or accident coverage they will have to pay for their medical expenses out of their own pocket. If you are sued and don’t have liability / Director & Officers coverage you would have to hire a lawyer to defend you against the action & then pay any damages out of your own pocket. Defence costs alone can be quite expensive; probably enough to bankrupt most sports clubs. How do we obtain proper insurance coverage? Ontario Badminton Association has an excellent insurance program with the coverages you need. The program includes Liability, Directors’ & Officers, and Sport Accident coverage. in the woods. And yes we got to play the best games of badminton, oh what

One hundred and eleven players from Ontario entered the Canadian Open Mas-ters Badminton Championships held last week in Ottawa, with many local players joining the Ontario competitive players.
International players from Pakistan, Ja-pan, Peru and England, and Canadian competitors from across the country, totalled 281 athletes at the event.
Former Canadian athletes playing in their first Masters included Mike Beres and Kyle Hunter from Ontario, together win-ning the 35+ Men’s Doubles event, and Mike defeating Kyle in the Men’s Singles event.
The host committee, led by Marg Thom and Wally Gerus, were thanked by all at the closing dinner. The venue for the 2010 event will be announced as soon as confirmation is received.
Mike Beres (35+) from the RA Centre, Penny Parkes (50+) from Woodstock Bad-minton Club and Ian Bishop (60+) from the RA Centre were triple gold winners.

K-W Badminton Club Summer Camp 2009 The K-W Badminton Club will be hosting a summer camp for juniors from ages 8 to 18 in our dedicated badmin-ton facility. The camp will be designed to teach the fundamental strokes and footwork to those new to badmin-ton, as well as improve accuracy, techniques and strategies for those familiar with the sport. Our coaching staff are highly skilled players and coaches with extensive knowledge and experience. There will be a maximum of 24 participants accepted. All campers must wear non-marking indoor gym shoes on the court

The OBA Annual General Meeting was held at the end of May with District Representatives and the OBA Board meeting to report on the 2008-2009 year and plan for 2009-2010. President Ian Bishop reported on the successes of the year - a very successful Exhi-bition with Hariawan and Engga Setiawan competing with Andrew Dabeka, Kevin Cao, Efendi Wijaya, and Michelle Li and Jennifer Lam playing a singles event, Quest for Gold supported athletes doing well at national championships, all provincial championships going well, and officials at all events. The Ontario Junior Ranking System had problems through the year as it was automated but Eduardo Gregorio reported that for the coming season he hoped to be able to include District level events on a secondary level. Quest for Gold assisted the OBA in several areas. Ten athletes received support through the Ontario Athlete Assistance Pro-gramme (Joseph Rogers, Tommy McKee, Nathan Lee, Peter Butler, Kevin Li, Michelle Li, Alex Bruce, Caroline Cheung, Katelin Dejak and Joycelyn Ko). A coach mentoring programme available saw Melissa Nock work under Wayne King and, following that success, Michael Thich also working with Wayne King. A programme to enhance coaching in the province had helped with the hosting of a seminar for coachces at the Toronto Junior Elite series tournament, helped to bring Hariawan and Setiawan and other coaches to the Christmas High Performance Camp, and helped with the first of a series of seminars for high school coaches. The operational plan for 2009-2010 would see further development in several key areas: further development of the OBA Board and Committee structure; website upgrade; promotion of the sport through the media; development of plans for senior players including more CDE events; further development of an OBA second tier circuit for juniors; sponsorship redevelopment; officials professional development through upgrade clinics and mentoring; and development of the OBA risk management programme. Highlights from the districts - Reports were received from Jeff Goldsworthy for WOBA who highlighted the inter-club play that had taken place thanks to the grant received from the OBA; Fei Tam from ODBA who reported on the Sunday Drop-in Play started in Ottawa with the aid of a Trillium grant; Frank Boulanger from NOBA where they had used the grant received from OBA to have a very successful first camp to launch their OWG team selection; Fred Carruthers reported for TDBA on a successful year but with sad news - he and Roger Wallis would be stepping down at the TDBA AGM. Roger reported on coaching and fun sessions held in the Etobicoke area; and Russ Le Blanc, attending for COBA, reported on three fun team events that had taken place in Lindsay, Bow-manville and Belleville. The OBA Board for 2009-2010 will be: Ian Bishop, President; Jeff Sum, Treasurer; Directors Susan Mussakowski, Brian Tjoa, Pry Gnana, Eduardo Gregorio, Dave Kumar, Jim Duncan, and Deborah Tom.
