OUTCOMES OF THE STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE 2017 #CQUNIASPIRE

The #CQUniAspire Student Leadership Conference (Tuesday 31 October to Thursday 2 November) was a

resounding success with 80 students travelling from across Australia to CQUniversity Mackay. The conference

was an immersive leadership experience, the theme being Become a Changemaker: Social Innovation in Action.

Presentations by guest speakers Naomi Arnold (CQUni alumnus and award-winning business and life passion coach) and Tara Diversi (entrepreneur and CQUni alumnus), Wayne Horwood (from Headspace, a national youth mental health foundation) and students Ellise Leahy (Education), Lydia O’Meara (Medical Sciences, Nutrition), and Tenille Da Rin Perette (Business)

Overarching themes of CQUni values, Human-Centred Design and Change-Making (including both innovation and entrepreneurship).

CQUni Aspire participants also took part in a range of leadership and teambuilding workshops, one of which was the Hands On Project to assemble 40 prosthetic hands donated to landmine victims.

Dalrymple Bay Coal and CQUniversity jointly funded the activity, which is a project of the Rotary Australia World Community Service. Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Pty Ltd (DBCT P/L) Chief Executive Officer, Steve Rae, said sponsoring the Hands On Project had benefits that extended far beyond the workshop “We are able to assist our next generation of leaders learning and development, while at the same time ensuring someone overseas receives a life changing gift. Future leaders need to be compassionate, embrace innovation and understand corporate social responsibility. A workshop such as this has the ability to change someone’s perspective, help them to think outside of themselves and realise the difference they can make when working with a team on meaningful projects.”

Students presented ideas to DVC (Engagement, Campuses & Mackay-Whitsunday Region) Professor Pierre Viljoen and DVC (Finance and Planning) Ms Narelle Pearce, with presentations sent to Mr Chris Veraa, Director, Student Experience, for inclusion on the Student Participation and Retention Committee planning day scheduled for 20 November 2017.

Five students received completion certificates for the CQU Certificate of Engaged Leadership. These students are the first to complete the program which was developed in 2016.

PASS PROGRAM – PROPOSAL IN DEVELOPMENT FOR 2018

At the Student Representative Council meeting on 4 April 2017 discussions occurred on the TAFE Peer

Assistance Program and action was agreed to further develop the proposal. After consultation with the

university-wide community and support especially from the School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences

(HMAS) and as of November 2017, the School of Business and Law, it is clear that the PASS program is the

preferred option and meets the requirements of an academic assistance program.
