Many of our readers will already be aware that on 10 December, The States of Guernsey will be asked to approve The Motor Taxation (First Registration Duty) (Guernsey) Ordinance. However, the figures now represent a considerable increase on the original charges, and this increase has a very far reaching effect.

If agreed, this Law will affect the average motorist more than owners of the large, gas guzzling cars it is intended to penalise, with the tax adding around 20% to the cost of the average, family sized, new car and will prevent people purchasing the very vehicles that increase fuel efficiencies and reduce carbon emissions.

Imported used vehicles will be severely impacted by this tax, which could be 50% of the car’s value.

We are in favour of an emissions tax across all vehicle users in Guernsey. However, it feels this must be an equitable tax that is reasonable, has a realistic chance of raising the revenue required, and is simple and cheap to administer. Increasing fuel duty would meet this goal.

The GMTA are calling on Deputies to propose a Requete to reject this Ordinance, whose impact would be so detrimental to the average motorist, and to establish a strategy which will provide a more equitable tax and one that can raise a realistic level of taxation.
