FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PADDLE CRAFT
(AS OF 23MAY08) (Presented in a single sheet format has been added to your packet)
The following items are required minimum equipment for paddle craft:
PFDs: 1 TYPE I, II, III, OR V LIFE JACKET IS REQUIRED FOR EACH POB.
TYPE V MUST BE WORN IAW LABEL DIRECTIONS
CHILDREN UNDER 13 MUST WEAR PFD (IF THE STATE HAS ESTABLISHED WEAR
REQUIREMENTS THEY TAKE PRECEDENCE OVER FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS)
SOUND PRODUCING SOME MEANS OF MAKING
DEVICE: AN EFFICIENT SIGNAL IS REQUIRED.
VISUAL DISTRESS IF OPERATING BETWEEN SUNSET
DEVICE: AND SUNRISE MUST CARRY A VDS
SUITABLE FOR NIGHT USE – EITHER 1
ELECTRIC LIGHT (FLASHLIGHT) OR 3
COMBO DAY/NIGHT FLARES
NAVIGATION IF OPERATING BETWEEN SUNSET
LIGHTS: AND SUNRISE, 1 WHITE LIGHT (FLASHLIGHT ACCEPTABLE)

There was a slight decline in the First Coast Guard District Recreational Boating and Paddling fatalities in 2008
There were 55 fatalities in 2008
as compared to 58 in 2007
Of the total 55 fatalities in 2008 only one person, a 3-year old girl on a 16’ capsized sailboat, wore a life jacket

D1 had a total of 23 in 2007
and 14 in 2008
A reduction of 39.13%
No one was wearing a life jacket

o The Project Manager will submit a Semi-Monthly report to the Cape Office via email to

o Have the report sent by the 14th and 28th of each month, April through 1 November
o Paddlesmart Materials shipped in early March at a quantity of 50
