What is Operating System?

• An operating system is an interface between the

hardware of a computer

• Is a software, which makes a computer to actually work.

• Enables all the programs we use.

• Organizes and controls the hardware.

• Acts as an interface between the application programs and the machine hardware.

• Examples: Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac OS, etc.,

Types of Operating system

• Operating systems have 4 types

1. Real time OS : fast and small OS , response quickly, run real time applications. Ex: Music player ,Medical devices .

2. Single user/Single tasking OS: Allow a single user to perform Can do Just one task at a time. Get input by using functions. Ex: MS-DOS.

3. Single user/Multitasking OS: Allow a single user to perform. Perform two or more function at once. Most commonly used in personal computers. Ex: Windows Xp.

4. Multi user/Multitasking OS: Allow multiple users to use programs. Requires a high configured pc Maintenance can be easy. Ex: UNIX

the computerThere are 2 interface 1. Command Line Interface (CLI): Older interface User have to types commands DOS, Linux, UNIX 2. Graphical User Interface (GUI): Most common interface Have a graphical representation Windows 7,Xp.
