M E L R O S E O P E N A I R A R T S Celebrate the arts this spring in Melrose with the 6th annual Open Air Arts event.

The excitement starts on Wednesday, March 21, with 50 “en plein air” artists from across Florida working in beautiful north Florida to capture the vitality and beauty of the area with paint, cameras, and a creative variety of mixed media.  Open Air Arts continues over two big weekends, culminating in a ticketed gala, a public sale day, and a dance!

On Saturday and Sunday, March 24 & 25, come out to explore the area, meet the artists at work, see demonstrations, take an art class, attend an art lecture and come to an evening dance.

Plan to come back the second weekend for the ticketed reception on Friday, March 30th, the on-going sale of the finished work at all three galleries on Saturday, March 31st and a dance party to live music at Shake Rag Art & Culture Center.

Both art collectors and first-time buyers will have the opportunity to learn from and talk to artists, watch art-making in progress, and purchase affordable original art by respected artists. Open Air Arts is a chance to experience art in a special way and to honor the most important rule in your art purchase – to buy what you like.

This year’s ticketed Champagne Opening Reception on Friday, March 30th will benefit the non-profit  organizations Doris Bardon Community Cultural Center in Gainesville and the Florida’s Eden Blue Path, as well as the arts in Melrose.  Buy advance tickets at www.melrosebayartgallery.com, or at The Doris, Main Street in Gainesville.

Open Air Arts is proud to be part of the inaugural year of Primavera. Learn more about all the cultural events this spring in North Central Florida at PrimaveraFestival.us.

Melrose Bay Art Gallery,  Bellamy Road Fine Arts,  and Shake Rag Art & Culture Center welcome you to Melrose, “The Little Town with the Big Art & Music Scene” for Open Air Arts, 2012.

See you in Melrose!OPEN AIR ARTS PURCHASE AWARDS

Planning to purchase art at Open Air Arts? Sponsor a Purchase Award, and preview all the art before the Champagne Opening Reception on Friday, March 30. Plus, select one of three beneficiaries to receive 20% of the award: Open Air Arts, The Doris Bardon Community Cultural Center, or Florida’s Eden Blue Path.  For information or to sign up for a purchase award, contact Becky O’Brien: [email protected]. ph

H I S T O R I C M E L R O S E

In 1877, the community of Melrose was platted along the historic Bellamy Road, Florida’s first federal highway. At the same time, work started on a canal to connect Lake Santa Fe to the railroad at Waldo, and by 1881 it was completed. Soon, steamboats began bringing Northern tourists to the southeast end of Lake Santa Fe on Melrose Bay. Fine Victorian homes ringed the bay along with schools, churches, a hotel, stores, a newspaper and a grist mill.

The winter of 1894-95 brought disastrous freezes across North Florida. Temperatures dropped to zero. The hotel closed, merchants went out of business and Melrose barely survived. Out of tragedy came a benefit. While the rest of Florida boomed, little changed in Melrose.

The visual history of the community remains a functioning part of everyday life. Today, Melrose with its slow pace and abundance of beautiful lakes, is a thriving town whose assets are protected by Historic Melrose, Inc. and supported by the Melrose Business and Community Association. The charm of Old Melrose has drawn many visitors as well as artists, writers and naturalists.
