Welcome to City: a top 20 UK university. (Guardian University Guide 2017)

We are delighted to welcome you to our Open Day. We think City University London is a unique place to study: we are located in the heart of one of the most exciting cities in the world; we combine a commitment to academic excellence with a longstanding tradition of preparing graduates for top-flight careers in business and the professions; and we are one of the UK’s most international universities, with students and staff from over 150 countries.

You are visiting our University at an exciting time. We have recently been announced in the top 20 universities in the UK (Guardian University Guide 2017) and we will be joining the University of London from September 2016. In addition to this, we are currently investing £120 million in our campus (including a new entrance area) and in 2015 we achieved our best ever score in the National Student Survey (NSS); which saw us ranked 1st in London for teaching-quality and 1st in London for student experience.

Open Days are a great way to see this investment in our students. We encourage you to visit our new sports centre - CitySport, see the expanded online and print resources in our libraries, explore the new spaces for studying and the new student space, CityBar.

Our Open Day is packed full of tours, talks, lectures and events to provide you with a glimpse of life as a City student and this Guide will help you plan your day.

Over the page, you will find some tips on making the most of your visit. The talks planner on pages 8 and 9 provides an overview of all of the day’s activity, while pages 12 to 21 contain more information on academic life at City, with details of course-specific talks run by City’s five Schools.

At the back of the Guide, you will find maps of our campus. On the day, staff and student ambassadors will be on hand to help you to find your way around, chat about life at City and answer your questions.

We’re looking forward to meeting you and we hope you enjoy your time at City.

Open Days Team

Planning your day at CityCity’s Open Day is held at the University’s main campus, around Northampton Square. Student ambassadors will be around campus throughout the day: they can help you find your way and they also run our campus tours. The maps at the back of this Open Day Guide will help you organise your time at City.

Our friendly student ambassadors, dressed in their red t-shirts, will be at the nearest train stations and situated around campus throughout the day. Please look out for them; they can help you find your way and show you around the University once you arrive.

Travel information

City is located in Central London and it has excellent transport links. Our nearest London Underground stations are Angel (Northern Line) and Farringdon (Circle Line; Hammersmith & City Lines; National Rail Services). Both stations are approximately ten minutes’ walk from Northampton Square.

There are numerous bus routes which run by Northampton Square, including the following: 4, 19, 30, 38, 43, 55, 56, 73, 153, 205, 214, 243, 274, 341, 394, 476.

For further information on public transport in London, please visit www.tfl.gov.uk

Parking in Central London is expensive and we recommend using public transport where possible. However, if you do plan to arrive at City by car, please visit www.ncp.co.uk to find details of convenient car

parks. City is unable to provide visitor parking on campus.

At the back of this guide you will find a map of our campus and the local area.

Arrival

When you arrive at City, you will be able to register at any one of our four entrances, all of which are highlighted in the maps in this guide. Please make sure you bring your barcode registration email with you for fast-track registration on the day; you will be given a wristband once you have registered.

There are Open Day helpdesks throughout campus, where staff and student ambassadors will be ready to help you plan your day, register for tours and find your way around. Facilities are available for prayer and quiet reflection during the day. Please ask at an Open Day helpdesk for more information.

Plan

Open Days are always very busy: at any point in the day, there are several talks taking place and tours departing. It is helpful to identify your ‘can’t miss’ events.

Among these will usually be any talks that relate to the subject(s) you are interested in studying, plus any of the mock-lectures, or, interactive sessions, which are designed to complement these course talks.

General talks on admissions, student finance, careers and accommodation are also really helpful as you plan for life at university and the student experience talks give a different insight into life here. Finally, the Welcome to City talks at 10am and 12pm provide an excellent overview of everything City has to offer. Note down times and locations on the talks planner on pages 8 and 9 of this guide.

Making the most of your visit

London, and can you help you find your way around. Staff including admissions tutors, senior academics, Student Centre advisors and others will also be on hand and happy to chat.

Refuel

It can be tempting to pack as much as possible into your visit, but don’t forget to stop for lunch during the day. All of the catering outlets on campus are open for Open Days and there is free tea and coffee in the refectory, located in the University Building (B). We also have hot food served from the grill in the Drysdale Garden.

If you would prefer to venture off campus, Exmouth Market, close to the Rhind Building (D), is one of London’s foremost streets for restaurants and cafes.

Life beyond the lecture hall

Open Days provide an invaluable opportunity to find out about academic life. Course-specific talks outline what you will study and when; options for work placements and study abroad during your degree; and the career paths open to you once you graduate.

But as current students will tell you, life at university extends far beyond the lecture hall. What is the social life like? Will I meet people who share my interests? Are there opportunities for volunteering in the community or for paid employment while I study? Talks on the Student Experience can help with this, as will our Sport talks. You can also drop into the Student Centre and the Career & Skills Development Service to find out more about what City can offer you. You will find further details of these services on pages 6 and 7.

Explore

Campus tours, which run throughout the day, are a great way to get your bearings. But it can also be really helpful to wander around campus yourself or with parents or friends: if you get lost, a student ambassador will always be close at hand to help you find your way. Try to allow a little time for exploring our neighbourhood as well: close to Angel you will find plenty of shops and cafes, while cultural activity and restaurants dominate around Farringdon, Barbican and the nearby Exmouth Market.

Ask questions

Do not be afraid to ask questions; student ambassadors will be around campus throughout the day to help answer any questions you may have. As current students, they have first-hand experience of living and studying in

3www.city.ac.uk2 City University London Open Day Guide July 2016

When planning your day, make sure to allow some time for getting to know City’s buildings and facilities; a campus tour, run by a Student Ambassador, is an excellent place to start. We have two different tours operating throughout the day; one of our accommodation options and one of our campus (not including accommodation).

Many of our departments also run tours of their own facilities: details of these additional tours are available on the subject-specific pages that follow.

Campus tours

Campus tours are led by student ambassadors and take approximately half an hour. You will visit the Student Centre, the Career and Skills Development Service, the Library and the Students’ Union. At many of these locations, staff will be on hand to provide more information and answer your questions.

To book a place on a campus tour, visit the Open Day tour desks located in the Rhind Building (D), College Building (A) and University Building (B). Tours run every ten minutes between 10am and 2.30pm and they depart from the Bandstand in Northampton Square – shown on the map opposite.

Accommodation tours

We guarantee all of our undergraduate students an affordable place in our halls of residence, all of which are based in Zone 1 and within walking distance of our

Northampton Square campus. Students can enjoy the benefits of studying in London with City accommodation.

At our Open Day you will be able to visit three of our halls of residence; East Central House, Liberty Court, or, Liberty Hall (locations for which are detailed in the map opposite). We aim to provide a range of accommodation options for our students, with our accommodation options including both en-suite and standard rooms.

We encourage all students who are interested in viewing the accommodation to also attend one of the Accommodation Talks taking place on campus. You can find full details on this in the Talks Planner of this guide, on pages 8 and 9.

As shown on the map opposite, all talks leave from the Northampton Square Bandstand. This is accessed from St. John Street via Wyclif

Street and from Goswell Road via Ashby Street.

University of London tours

With City due to be joining the University of London later this year, we are offering tours to Senate House at the University of London, leaving on coaches parked outside the College Building entrance at 12pm and 1pm.

These tours will last up to 90 minutes and you will be able to see Senate House, the home of University of London; most importantly, you will receive a tour of the key student areas: the Senate House Library and Student Central - the former University of London Union.

You can book these tours in advance using the ‘Top 10 Tips’ email we will send out to all registered guests. Depending on availability, you can also book on these tours on the day, using the tour desks on the walkway in the University Building.

City is set to join the University of London, becoming one of its self-governing Colleges later this year.

The University of London was founded by Royal Charter in 1836 and is one of the oldest, largest and most diverse universities in the UK. It is a collegiate university currently consisting of 17 self-governing Colleges and 10 other smaller specialist research institutes.

This landmark in City’s history presents many benefits and opportunities for our students. Students will be able to access the University of London library resources and will be entitled to

membership of ‘Student Central’ (the former University of London Union). University of London membership will also lead to improvements to students’ overall experience, through opportunities for greater social interaction, extension of the student community, access to additional libraries, accommodation options and sports facilities and teams.

City will continue to recruit, register and be responsible for its students. Students of City will also become members of the University of London. City will continue to set its entrance criteria and examinations, award its own degrees and offer

independent services to students. It will remain a chartered institution, autonomous and self-governing, with its own Council, Senate, Students’ Union and other bodies as at present.

At today’s Open Day you can explore the University of London by taking a coach tour there, where you will receive a tour of the library and Student Central from current University of London students. These tours leave at 12pm and 1pm from outside the College Building Reception.

You must register on this tour at the Campus Tour desks throughout campus.

Building the vision Joining the University of LondonUniversities bring people, ideas and knowledge together. In this

increasingly virtual world the physical environment plays a crucial role in facilitating this. At City University London, we have reshaped our estate, year on year, to support our overall vision and to provide a better experience for our staff and students.

How it is now

Some of the University facilities will be under maintenance in 2016. In order for us to provide the facilities that staff and students deserve, we have to continue to improve our estate and sometimes this means in the meantime there are areas of the University that are not shown in the best light; even at big events like our Undergraduate Open Day.

As detailed earlier in this guide, we will be using alternative entrances to the University for today’s event, please make sure you take note of which entrance is most applicable for your journey here.

What it will become

As part of today’s Open Day you will hopefully see our new underground lecture theatres in the Drysdale Building (E) and University Building (B), our new social space CityBar (C) and the CitySport (R) complex on Goswell Road. These excellent facilities provide some indication of our commitment to services for our current and future students.

On a typical mid-term day, our main entrance is used 16,000 times; therefore improvements are required to effectively manage this footfall and extra entry points around the campus will be introduced, reducing

crowding and providing an enhanced experience.

In late 2016 the work on redeveloping our main entrance on Northampton Square will be complete; resulting in an accessible and smart complex, fully glazed to maximise the connection with the local community. When it is open, the entrance will link the lecture spaces at lower ground level and will include a mezzanine-level crossing between our University Building (B) and Tait Building (C).

City’s tradition of providing high-quality education relevant to business and the professions dates back 160 years. For many of our graduates, time spent at City laid the groundwork for careers that have changed the world we live in.

1909

The Northampton Institute introduced courses in Aeronautical Engineering, the first offered in the United Kingdom. In this year the Institute also presented its first candidates for University of London BSc degrees.

1914-1918

During the First World War, the engineering facilities of the Northampton Institute were used to produce munitions and telegraph sets and members of academic staff helped to train munitions workers and service personnel. All departments also participated in schemes to retrain and find employment for wounded ex-servicemen.

1927

With the founding of the Department of Optometry and Visual Sciences, the Northampton Institute became one of the first establishments in the world to educate optometrists. City University London remains the only institution in London to offer a BSc in Optometry.

1939-1945

The Northampton Institute once again played a key part in the war effort, providing training courses for members of the RAF, Army and Navy in skills ranging from optics manufacturing to wireless mechanics. The University buildings suffered bomb damage, notably the Great Hall. Post-war reconstruction work would be completed in 1953.

1946

The Institute began a period of expansion that would set the stage for its transition into City University London in 1966. Between 1946 and 1956 the number of courses grew, student numbers increased and academic research became more important.

1955

The Northampton Institute offered a summer school on the use of electronic digital computers and calculators in accountancy, costing and management, laying the groundwork for the foundation of the British Computer Society.

1957

The Northampton Institute became the Northampton College of Advanced Technology, with

a mandate to increase student numbers and offer advanced degrees while retaining the former Institute’s close links with industry.

1963

The Northampton College began to construct its first hall of residence, close to the City of London.

1966

The University was created by Royal Charter. Dr James Tait was appointed as its first Vice-Chancellor and Oliver Thompson its first Pro-Chancellor. Together they approached the Lord Mayor of London and they established a unique association between the City and University that continues today, in which the Lord Mayor in office is also the Chancellor of City University London.

1969

The Drysdale and Centenary Buildings were completed. The University Building would be opened a year later, and the Tait Building in 1974.

1971

The astronauts of Apollo 15 visited City University London and presented Vice-Chancellor Tait with a piece of heat shield from the Apollo 15 command module.

1975

The first students of City University London’s new degree in Music began their studies. These students benefitted from the close links between the University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

1976

City offered a Diploma in Journalism, capitalising on its proximity to Fleet Street and its long experience of educating for the professions.

1977

The Centre for Legal Studies was established and the Graduate Diploma in Law was offered for the first time.

1988

The School of Engineering was formed under the guidance of Professor Ludwig Finkelstein, its first Dean.

1990

The School of Informatics was formed, bringing together the

departments of Information Science, Business Computing and Computer Science Undergraduate degrees in Law were offered for the first time.

2001

Following a generous donation from the Sir John Cass Foundation towards the Business School’s new building project, the School was renamed the Sir John Cass Business School. The Foundation, one of London’s oldest and largest education charities, continues to support the Cass Business School. Her Majesty the Queen opened the new building two years later. The Inns of Court School of Law was integrated into The City Law School.

2003

The School of Arts was formed, bringing together the departments of Music, Journalism and Publishing and Cultural Policy and Management.

2004

The Social Sciences Building (now Rhind) was opened.

2010

City University London was ranked in the top five per cent of universities in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and in the top 30 higher education institutions in the UK by the Times Higher Education Table of Tables.

2012

With a view to realising its 2016 Vision, City agreed its Strategic Plan 2012 - 2016.

2014

Forty per cent of City’s academic staff assessed as producing research of world-leading or internationally excellent quality in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014.

2016

City University London becomes a federal college of the University of London.

1852

The Inns of Court School of Law was founded. One of the earliest providers of legal education in London, it would become a part of The City Law School in 2001.

1876

Herbert Henry Asquith, British Prime Minister from 1908 to 1916, graduated from The Inns of Court School of Law. Asquith was the first of many global leaders including Mohandas ‘Mahatma’ Gandhi, Clement Attlee, Jawaharlal Nehru, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair, to pass through what is now The City Law School.
