Open Education Resource: Flipping the
Classroom with MOODLE About the OER
The objective of open education resource (OER) on Computer Network Topology:
The open education resource is a collection of different MOODLE activities which are useful as
out-of-class activity while flipping the classroom. The Functions of any network is highly
influenced by its topology. In recent years, it has been found that in the real-world of networks,
the topology is necessary since it mediates in the outcome of changes in the local interaction. This
affects the networks dynamical behavior. Network topology helps us to understand how a
computer network works.
Our OER is available at: https://drdotshabinasayyed.wordpress.com/oer-
activity/
(The moodle course is available at https://gst.moodlecloud.com/ .To take this course
student need to login to moodle site: https://gst.moodlecloud.com/login/index.php

Learning Objectives
After using this OER, learner will be able to:
Identify different network topologies and protocols.
Describe different network components.
Explore different implementations in Computer Network Topology.
Summarize the effects of different topologies on the network.
Helpful Documentation for Tool Use
[1] To Publish OER with description Wordpress.com is used (free web software).
[2] For creating video Screencast-O-Matic is used.
[3] For design and development of course, moodlecloud.com free Moodle cloud service is used.
[4] Power Point slides are created using MS Office/ Libra Office

Section 2: Design Decisions
Nature of Decisions taken to Design OER
Following decisions were taken to design the OER:
1. Content Decisions
2. Pedagogic Decisions
3. Technology Decisions
1. Content Decisions:-
The content decisions are related to the following points:
a) Taking decision about a specific course.
b) Taking decision about specific topic in the course.
c) Considering the importance of the chosen topic.
d) Referring various E-books, NPTEL videos on the decided topic i.e. Computer Network
Topology.
e) Decided to create screen casts that will help students to carry out hands on for course.
2. Pedagogic Decisions:-
Typically in a flipped classroom strategy, there are two segments – Out-of-class segment and In-
Class segment. The out-of-class segment requires student to refer to some given material (Video,
PPT, PDF etc.) which are available at https://drdotshabinasayyed.wordpress.com/resources/ and
form an understanding about the concepts that are relevant. In terms of concept marking the
pedagogic decisions that were taken for the Out-of-class segment related to:
a. Cognitive Levels of Questions to be asked along with the resources – Mostly to recall
Apply level question for out of class and Create Level question for In-class Segment.
e.g. Giving assignment based on application level questions to be solved out of class
and discuss an innovative case study in class.
b. Assessment Strategies – Quiz for out of class activity and Team-Pair-Solo strategy
for in-class which is available on moodle course link is :
https://gst.moodlecloud.com/login/index.php using username: student and password:
student.

3. Technology Decisions:-
While developing the Out-of-Class and In-class activities, the major technology decisions
taken were:
a. Tool used for creating screen cast is Screencast o matic, which is a free screen and web
cam recorder to capture video from a computer screen and share it on screencast o
matic.com ,YouTube or it can be directly save as a video file. These videos can be made
easily available to the students in multiple ways
b. MOODLE Lesson Activity for setting up Out-of-Class segment as it allowed guided
self-learning.
c. Alternate way is to refer same content via screencasts/ppts/supplementary materials on
word press website https://drdotshabinasayyed.wordpress.com/resources/ is decided.

How to use this OER
For Students:
Step 1: To view this OER, Send the request to instructor email id: [email protected]
to enroll for the courses available on OER website
https://drdotshabinasayyed.wordpress.com/oer-activity/ . The instructor will register you for
moodle course access and send you username/password for the same.
Step 2: Login to moodle website https://gst.moodlecloud.com/ with username: student and
password: student (for student access)
Step 3: View all lessons (OER) from enrolled course: Computer Network.
Step 4: Attempt quiz within scheduled deadlines or submit answers to the questions asked
during lesson/screencasts before attending next class. Complete mentioned questions during
lab session and submit as a lab assignment.
Step 5: Be ready for In-Class activity.
For Instructor:
Step 1: Create lessons on moodle and make them available to students as per schedule.
Step 2: Create quizzes/ ask questions during lesson learning as part of Out-of-Class activity.
Ask student to submit the answers before attending next class.
Step 3: Before start of the next class please go and check the reports to see how students
performed.
Step 4: Additionally, if there are some common errors made by students, you may start the
face-to-face session with a Peer Instruction question to elicit the misconception and resolve
it.
Best Practices with Lesson Activity
Here are some of the best practices from our experience on using this Lesson Activity in
classroom:
1. Repeat such activity for all the topics.
2. Provide some assessment and evaluation (marks) for completion of the activity.
3. Be sure that there is constructive outcome of the activity.
Additionally, if there are some common errors made by students, you may start the face-to-face
session with a Peer Instruction question to elicit the misconception and resolve it.

Section 4: Evaluating Effectiveness of OER
The OER effectiveness can be assessed at two levels:
1. At the student level
2. At the Instructor level
Effectiveness at the student level
Effectiveness at the student level involves following measurable aspects :
1. Resources accessed by students
2. Learning outcomes by students
Student level effectiveness of the OER can be evaluated, with the report showing the total
number of students who accessed the reports (along with time) and their marks (based on their
answers to MCQs/Quiz).
Effectiveness at Instructor level
OER consumers are mostly teachers who want their students to learn concept mapping.
Linking a Feedback activity on moodle for whoever visits the moodle site. This has to be
done as a follow-up activity.
Implementing Survey
The feedback activity is provided for the enrolled users whose report can be considered as a
survey.

Building a Community of MOODLE and
Flipped Classroom Adopters
Possible Sources for Community Building
Some of the viable sources for building a community are:
• Teachers who are using MOODLE
• Teachers who plan to use Flipped Classroom Strategies
Plans for Community Building
The resource is already available in the webpage and its access requires the users to provide
their email id. Thus there will be a list of interested users whom we can follow up using email.
All the interested users can then be connected using a local Wordpress or Moodle website.
