THE TOWN OF PALMERSTON HAS A VERY UNIQUE HISTORY IN SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO.

When the railways began to extend to this part of the province, the majority of towns already existed when the railway lines were built. As a result, the stations were built on the outskirts of the towns.

Palmerston, however, came into existence in the 1870’s with the arrival of the Wellington, Grey and Bruce Railway. Since the town was built around the railroad, Palmerston has the smallest main street in Southwestern Ontario, as well as the longest Pedestrian Bridge in all of Ontario.

BUSINESSES & SERVICESDowntown Palmerston has 40 business and service establishments. Palmerston is home to severaldestination retail and service businesses which include antiques, recreational vehicles, legal, financial and real estate services. Downtown Palmerston also has a strong convenience cluster. The popular Norgan Theatre, Railway Heritage Museum and developing Heritage Park bring locals and tourists into the downtown all year round.

“Palmerston’s close proximity to larger centres presents opportunity for growth in the near future, while still enjoying the rural setting and lifestyle. As proud business owners in Palmerston, we try to invest back in our community by supporting groups like the Lions Club, local food bank and minor sports organizations. Renew Northern Wellington aims to revitalize communities in the Township of Wellington North, Township of Mapleton and Town of Minto by matching vacant commercial and retail space with new businesses that need a hand getting started.

Entrepreneurs get exposure and grow their business through low cost access to a storefront location starting from as little as $100/month, with no long term commitment!

Are you a building owner with a vacant storefront or space? The Renew Northern Wellington program can help you care for your property and find your next long-term tenant.

Learn more about the program at renewnorthernwellington.ca.

business incentivesFaçade, Signage & Structural Improvement Grant ProgramThe purpose of this program is to encourage façade and signage improvements for privately-owned commercial buildings in the Community Improvement Areas within the Town of Minto.

This is a matching grant program, which means that the applicant pays a portion of the improvement and the Town provides a grant for a portion up to a maximum of $3,000 for facades and $1,000 for signage. Costs in excess of the maximum grant shall be the responsibility of the applicant.

The purpose of the Structural Improvement Grant is to offer incentives to landowners, businesses and developers that propose significant commercial, industrial, residential or institutional projects that substantially renovate, restore, improve and update a prominent building or structure or key vacant property, and accomplish more than one of the following:

• Address structural and life safety issues to create usable and efficient floor space

• Improve property standards or preserve architectural significance

• Remediate a brownfield site, or improve the environment by planting trees, protecting habitat, or other methods to enhance the natural ecosystems

• Upgrade public infrastructure such as sewer, water, storm, roadway and/or sidewalks

• Preserve or enhance employment opportunities

Grant assistance is provided in the form of an up to 50% matching grant, which is paid upon completion of the previously approved work.

For more detailed information about the Façade, Signage & Structural Improvement Grant Program please visit mintoed.com or contact Belinda Wick-Graham, Business & Economic Manager, at 519-338-2511 ext. 241.
