Having been involved in it for the past year now, I have a newappreciation for the amazing amount of weight lifting effort volunteers dedicate.     Welcome to the 8th Annual OPEN Forum in Silicon Valley. Over the

    years OPEN has brought thought leaders together to share with ourmembers about what is shaping our careers, lives and the worldaround us. This year is no exception.

    The theme this year is LAUNCH - a word that captures the current spirit in SiliconValley. Spring is here and the recession is over - look around you and optimism loomseverywhere. The time of banking crises, stock market crashes, and bursting realestate bubbles is ending and we hold in our hands the seeds of renewal. People areready to launch their startups, their careers, and many fresh graduates are ready to

    launch their professional lives.

    Today OPEN Forum 2011 presents a multi-track program that will bring thoughtleaders and opinion makers as keynote speakers and panelists covering bothentrepreneurial and professional development aspects. The half-day Youth trackfocuses on Generation Y and features panels and workshops that can help decidethe upcoming generation on choosing a path that matches their ambitions andexposes them to some of the ways to make these choices.

    The Annual OPEN Forum is the biggest event that OPEN SV puts together and is aproduct of over 100 volunteers including a core committee of 15 who devote theirtime and resources to make this event a memorable and transforming experiencefor all. I thank our volunteers who have worked tirelessly for several months - withouttheir help this event would not have been possible. I also thank our sponsors whomade generous contributions to allow us to put this rich content in front of you.

    The Organization of Pakistani Entrepreneurs (OPEN) was launched in 1999 as avoluntary, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of entrepreneurshipand leadership in the Pakistani-American business community. Over the years OPENhas grown with chapters now in Boston, Houston, New York, Chicago, Silicon Valley,and Washington DC. The OPEN Silicon Valley community is several thousand-strong,and includes corporate professionals, entrepreneurs venture capitalists, bankingprofessionals social leaders, academics and students.

    Become a member of the OPEN Silicon Valley community! Here you will find anentire network of entrepreneurs and professionals that will help you in achieving yourprofessional goals. This is done through regular mentoring sessions, networkingevents, and skills and leadership development workshops throughout the year.

    All OPEN members are encouraged to lead, create, and participate in programs thatare delivered each year to the community. Those who have demonstrated years ofservice are often invited to become part of the Executive Committee and they set theagenda for new programs. You can also join OPENs Operating Committee and helporganize events.

    Access to our 50+ charter members is another way for you to seek mentorship andlearn from those who have been in the trenches. This kind of access will otherwisebe very hard for most people but as part of OPEN you are invited into the communitywho cares about your aspirations and goals.

    Women Leadership Forum 2011: Optimize Your Effectiveness - An annual conferencededicated to womens empowerment in the workspace. The one day conferencedesigned exclusively for women, by women from the community had over 150attendees.

    Starting Online Business on a Shoestring Budget by Naeem Zafar, Faculty memberat Berkeley-Haas Business School and CEO of Bitzer Mobile.

    Money Management: A Womans Perspective by Saadia Ahmad, a certifiedfinancial planner.

    Quarterly Networking Event with Samir Hoodbhoy, a Pakistani technologist,philanthropist and thought leader was a successful event with over 100attendees.

    Joint OPEN and TiE event, Just Between Friends, a successful event withover 200 attendees that addressed the joys and complexities of friends startingcompanies together.

    Pakistan Gaming Industry Showcase Companies from Pakistan.

    We also conducted OPEN Golf challenge and OPEN Cricket match between ourcharter members and volunteers who create greater engagement and opportunitiesfor informal mentorship.

    These are held monthly and open to all OPEN members. It is a great opportunityto meet with experts in a relaxed, informal setting, and build relationships and gainvaluable business and career feedback. This year mentors were Nadir Ali, PresidentSysorex, Zia Yusuf, CEO, Streetline Inc., Arif Janjua, Managing Director, BostonConsulting Group, and Aamir Shaikh, Managing Director, Corporate InvestmentsGroup, Bank of America.

    OPEN Silicon Valley Monthly Breakfasts is an excellent opportunity for entrepreneursand industry professionals to meet with experts in their respective field. The event isconducted in a relaxed, informal setting, where participants can build relationshipsand gain valuable business and career feedback.

    Participants are asked to deliver a 30 to 60 second elevator pitch, and the guestmentor provides immediate feedback, enabling fast, effective, accessible mentoringand relationship development.     Aaref A. HilalyPresident & CEO, Clearwell

    Zero to $400m: Building an Enterprise From Scratch:

    In his 11-year career in Silicon Valley, Aarefhas helped to create and sell two software

    companies collectively worth close to half a billion dollars. Most recently, as Presidentand CEO of Clearwell, he grew the company from a handful of engineers at the earlystages of product development into a high-growth, profitable company with over$50 million in annual revenue. Clearwell is the leading provider of electronic discoverysoftware, with over 400 customers and 75 partners in 14 different countries. On May19, 2011, Symantec announced that it would acquire Clearwell for $410 million. Thetransaction is expected to close in July.

    Prior to Clearwell, Aaref was Founder and CEO of CenterRun, which he led frominception in 2000 to its acquisition by Sun Microsystems for $66 million in August2003. CenterRun was a leading provider of application provisioning software andtoday forms the basis of Suns data center automation product suite.

    Aaref earned an MBA from Harvard Business School with high distinction as a BakerScholar. He holds a BA Honors degree from Oxford University, and a Masters degreefrom McGill University, where he was awarded the Arthur Tagge Fellowship. While afull-time student, he completed internships at Linklaters, Slaughter and May, and theUN Center For Human Rights in Geneva.

    Faran TahirActor

    Paths Less Traveled Conquering New Frontiers:

    Come and be inspired by Faran Tahir as he shares his journey and experiences as hecharted his way to success in a non-traditional career. He has a refreshing perspectivethat can provide invaluable ideas for people at all stages of their lives and how theycan reinvent their careers.

    Faran Tahir is a third generation Pakistani/American actor who has shown his talentsequally in film, television and theater. His most recent film credits include the viciousvillain, Raza, in the 2008 Marvel live action blockbuster, Iron Man, starring alongsideRobert Downey Jr., Jeff Bridges, Gwyneth Paltrow and Terence Howard. In 2009, hefollowed the success of Iron Man with another super hit, Star Trek, as the dashingand heroic Federation Captain. The casting marks a historic moment in the Star Treksaga and for him as well. He played the first Federation Captain of South Asian/Middle Eastern ethnicity. Tahirs vast television resume includes over 40 televisionappearances. He has been seen as guest leads in notable shows like Lost, Chuck,NYPD Blue, NCIS, NCIS- Los Angeles, Cold Case, The West Wing, Warehouse 13etc. Faran also plays a lead role in Shoieb Yunus feature film Two Mothers (now inpost-production).

    Faran graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a BA in Theatrebefore acquiring a graduate degree from Harvard Universitys Institute for AdvancedTheatre Training.

    Shahid Khan is a recognized thought leader in the media industry. His track recordincludes launching digital media and mobile initiatives for a wide spectrum of media and

    entertainment companies from broadband, mobile and cable television to eBooks anddigital music. Prior to joining Mediamorph, Shahid was a Senior Partner at IBB ConsultingGroup. Among his clients were Sony Entertainment, Scholastic, Disney, Hearst, IAC,Showtime, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision and Comcast. Shahid has also held executivepositions at BearingPoint/KPMG Consulting and IBM Global Services. He holds an MBAfrom New York University and is a Fellow at the Wharton School of Business. He is ofteninvited to speak at leading industry conferences and is widely quoted in the press onindustry issues.

    Omar Javaid is Vice President, Converged Experiences and Advanced Platforms. In thisrole, he is charged with developing the multi-screen strategy and products for MotorolaMobility.

    Previous to his current post, Omar was the managing director of BBO Global, a leadingadvisory and venture firm in the wireless and media space. At BBO, he advised seniorexecutives at leading media, telecommunications, and technology companies ontransformational products, technology trends, acquisitions, and restructuring activities.Mr. Javaid was a successful executive and entrepreneur, bringing more than 15 years

    of technology and entrepreneurial experience in the Telecommunications, Media, andInternet industries with leading firms such as Qualcomm and Deloitte. Omar holds degreesin chemistry and cellular & molecular biology from the University of Michigan.

    Faraz Hoodbhoy(Founder and Senior Vice President of Alliances at PixSense)Panelists:

    Faraz Hoodbhoy is a 3rd generation entrepreneur with unparalleled experience in the Pakistan-Silicon Valley corridor. With 15 years of global business experience gathered in over 40countries, Faraz is, most recently, the founder of PixSense. PixSense is a successfulmobile social media business with deployments across the globe including Indonesia,Malaysia, Norway, Vietnam, and the Philippines. With significant operating experiencegathered in Silicon Valley, Faraz has raised over $15m in venture capital as a Silicon Valleyentrepreneur. His career spans multiple functional roles from software and product design

    and development, to business development and sales, to executive management.

    An expert in mobile and imaging software, Faraz continues to contribute to professionaland trade publications and co-authored one of the first books on XML, Applied XML AToolkit for Programmers (John Wiley & Sons).

    Faisal Qureshi (Co-founder and CEO of Offermatic)Faisal is co-founder and CEO at Offermatic. He got the idea for Offermatic when he wasusing his favorite personal finance website to review his finances. While his personalfinance tool sent him occasional deals on various financial products, he wanted deals &offers on everyday purchases. Offers that were targeted to him and linked directly to his

    credit card so he could save money without dealing with coupons or vouchers.

    Given his background as an online marketing entrepreneur, Faisal realized he could builda service to help consumers save money while helping retail merchants to stop wastingmoney on poorly targeted marketing campaigns.

    Prior to starting Offermatic, Faisal founded a couple of other online marketing ventures beginning in 2005 with his first entrepreneurial venture called TellAPal. Before beingbit by the entrepreneurial bug, he worked as a product line marketing manager at SunMicrosystems. Faisal attended college at Florida International University in Miami.

    Aileen Lee (Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byer)

    Panelists:

    Aileen Lee is a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers which - she joined in 1999. Herprimary area of focus is working with consumer-oriented digital companies. Aileen hasworked closely with companies such as ShopKick, Zazzle, Bloom Energy, Miasole, BlueNile (NASDAQ: Nile), Friendster (acquired by MOL Global), Good Technology (acquired byMOT), Tellme (acquired by MSFT). She currently works with companies including CallawayDigital Arts, Offermatic, One Kings Lane, Plum District and RMG Networks (formerlyDanoo), where she was founding CEO for two years. Prior to joining KPCB, Aileen workedat Gap Inc. in various operating roles. These included business development, productmanagement, marketing for Gap Online and special assistant to CEO of Gap Inc. She hasalso worked for Odwalla and North Face in brand and product marketing. Aileen beganher career at Morgan Stanley in technology mergers & acquisitions.

    She has a Bachelor of Science from MIT, an MBA from the Harvard Business School, andis a Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute.

    Prior to Kaboodle, Chandra was vice president of worldwide marketing at VersantCorporation. Davidwrote the first laymans description of MP3 in early 1997 and graduated in 2000 with a BSin Computer Science from Stanford, where he was a President Scholar and a finalist in theACM International Programming Competition.

    David started the company that became [PBworks] in 2003, along the way creatingSingleStat.us and IMSmarter.

    David is a Founding Director of Hacker Dojo, a non-profit community center aimed atproviding programmers in the SF Bay Area a place to collaborate and innovate. Thislargely came out of Davids efforts as the co-founder of SuperHappyDevHouse, a monthlyhackathon whose 40+ Saturday gatherings of upwards of 600 programmers haveproduced many projects, companies, and friendships.

    Mike Hodges joined ATA Ventures in 2006 and became a Managing Director in 2008. Mikehas built a reputation as a successful CEO and interim CEO and is credited with severalsuccessful turnaround efforts, including Tellium, a Telecom Networking company thatbegan as a technology spinout from Bellcore in 1997 (Tellium completed a public offeringof $1.5B in 2001). Mike provides expert support to the ATA Ventures comprehensive

    Zahra Siddique, a sophomore at Calhigh in San Ramon. She is very active in entrepreneurial

    activities since the age of 12. First she built Ezahra to start selling online childrens noveltyschool supplies, goodie bags and gift baskets. Later she started first of its kind club ather school called Investeen to promote entrepreneurial and investment activities amongother teenagers, which is now become part of an international organization called DECA,where she has become the treasurer of her chapter.

    Check out the story about her club activities in local news paper San Ramon Patch and ina popular blog. Zahra is an active Toastmaster and runs her club meetings in Pleasantonregularly. She also manages IEEE ComSoc-SCV activities page, and volunteers at OPEN,Walk for Cancer,Spread Kindness, Interact and several other organizations where she

    provides active support. Last year during her summer vacation, she helped a new localrestaurant to organize their Grand Opening ceremony where she single handedly invitedcongressmen, state senator, Mayors and city & county officials and other dignitaries,which was very successful and attended by almost 150 people from the Tri-City area. Thecoverage was done in local papers.

    Aisha Thiessen is the creator of the site Catching Dreams. After graduating from theUniversity of Colorado at Boulder in May 2010, with a BFA in Film Studies and BA inEnglish, she moved to Silicon Valley to pursue reimagining and relaunching a webcomicshe started in high school. Not only does this involve writing and illustrating the comicitself, but developing the website, marketing the product, and managing the community.She hopes the comics popularity will pull in revenue through ads and merchandise, and, ifit really is successful, eventually launch her career in the entertainment industry.

    Jabezs career story started with his first corporate jobelf at Santa lane in downtownSeattle at the flagship Nordstrom store. He took this job, moved his way up the ladder, andbecame financial analyst of that very flagship store. Since then he has traveled the worldas a professional speaker, written books, and had a blast as a marketing consultant.     Wajahat Ali is a researcher and writer for the Center for American Progress focusing on

    Islamophobia in America. Ali was honored as an An Influential Muslim American Artistby the State Department and invited to their 2008 and 2010 Annual Ramadan dinners.He was named a Muslim Leader of Tomorrow for his journalism work and invited toparticipate in the 2009 conference in Doha, Qatar. He is the recipient of Muslim PublicAffairs Councils prestigious Emerging Muslim American Artist recognition of 2009.Wajahat Ali is also an Attorney at Law, practicing in the San Francisco Bay Area. WajahatAli is the proud recipient of the 2010 Otto Award for Political Theater.

    Vikas Khanna is the Managing Director of Zoovee Ventures a boutique angel investingand consulting services firm based in Silicon Valley. Prior to founding Zoovee, Vikas waspart of the founding team of NextWeb a VC-backed Wireless Internet Service Providerwhere he was tasked with leading the technology strategy for the company. During histenure, NextWeb grew to dominate its market segment, achieve national recognition asan Inc 500 (#104 in 2005) company, and delivered a successful exit with the acquisitionby Covad Communications in 2006.
