Open Your Mind 1 OPEN YOUR MIND: THE COUNTY’S VOICE ON MENTAL ILLNESS FEBRUARY 2012 Hello NAMI Members and Friends, I would like to invite you to our Third Annual Celebration of Volunteerism, Wellness and Recovery which will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 5:30pm at the McKinley Centre Atrium in Canton. Each year we recognize outstanding area mental health professionals, persons living in recovery with mental illness (Peers) and NAMI’s volunteers. Last year 149 professionals, peers and volunteers were honored. This event is free but reservations are needed. Join us as we celebrate these special people. Call the NAMI office at 330-455-6264 to make your reservation. I hope to see all of you there! Following this event, will be a short business meeting which will include a vote of membership on our board’s slate of officers. A major goal for 2012 is to increase our membership base which is critical as we advocate legislatively: the more persons we represent, the greater our voice is heard in speaking with local and state legislators on the issues that are so important to each of us: adequate funding for services, quality services, housing, hospitalization and more. I URGE you to please renew/initiate your membership. Please remember there is the Open Door option to join/renew that is low cost ($3.00). Also know that as of July 1, 2012, per National standards, membership fees will be increased so NOW is the time to join/renew. Please join and help us advocate for quality mental health funding. I ask that you help us recruit new members by asking your friends, family members and co-workers to join as well. Please help us build a stronger membership base; we need your help in member recruitment which builds a stronger affiliate. For your convenience, a membership form is included on page 7. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Can Help with Chronic Pain

Researchers reported in this month’s Archives of Internal Medicine that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can help bring relief to

some patients with chronic pain. CBT includes talk therapy to change how patients think about their pain, as well as behavioral

changes to reduce stress, manage anxiety and improve sleep. Researchers studied 442 patients with chronic body-wide pain. They

were randomly assigned to one of four groups. One group received CBT by phone; a second group was told to exercise 20 to 60

minutes daily, at least twice a week; a third participated in both CBT and exercise; and a fourth continued with whatever pain

treatments they had previously been using. Thirty-seven percent of those in the CBT and exercise group reported feeling “much

better” or “very much better” after nine months, compared with 33 percent in the CBT-only group, 24 percent in the exercise-only

group, and 8 percent in the usual treatment group.

The effects of vitamin D on depression A new study published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings suggests depression is linked to low levels of vitamin D. There were 12,600 participants in the study, ranging in age from 20 to 90. The amount of vitamin D in the blood of each participant was measured by researchers, who also assessed the participants for depression symptoms.

THE HAUNTED SELF: Structural Dissociation and the Treatment of Chronic Traumatization by Onno van der Hart, Ellert R. S. Nijenhuis and Kathy Steele, 2006. & COPING WITH TRAUMA RELATED DISSOCIATION: Skills Training for Patients and Therapists by Suzette Boon, Kathy Steele and Onno van der Hart, 2011. These are two books every counselor and psychiatrist will want to read & recommend to those who have trauma related disorders. The Haunted Self is a more difficult read, while the workbook, Coping with Trauma Related Dissociation, presents the same material in simpler terms. The authors also did a tremendous job of showing one how to live out & apply the knowledge and treatment strategies found in both books. They did this by providing reflective, integrative homework at the end of each chapter. A person with a dissociative disorder at any stage of recovery would find the information in both books fresh, challenging, and life-changing. Another suggestion for the workbook would be to have the client read it and review homework portions with his/her therapist. This would be a ton of great material for counseling sessions! Now, back to the book! The Haunted Self begins by explaining the Theory of Structural Dissociation of the Personality (TSDP), and the Janetian Psychology of Action. The author believes that when working together, this knowledge will equip the therapist to better understand the client and their dissociative parts and assist in leading the client to a place where they are able to function at their highest mental level. When in this state, the client will finally be able to take care of “unfinished business,” such as processing memories, or the completion of emotional, historical, relational or daily life tasks. The reason the book is called “The Haunted Self” is because those suffering from trauma-related disorders are “haunted” with so much unfinished business. The book is divided into three parts, with the first section outlining “Structural Dissociation of the Personality.” Topics covered include Primary, Secondary & Tertiary Structural Dissociation, the Apparently Normal & Emotional Parts of the personality along with two separate chapters devoted to trauma related symptoms & disorders. The middle portion of the book explains “Chronic Traumatization & a Janetian Psychology of Action.” Included here are synthesis and its limitations in trauma survivors, traumatization as a syndrome of non-realization, the hierarchy of action tendencies and phobic maintenance of structural dissociation. The last part of the book covers “Treatment of Chronically Traumatized Patients.” This takes into account assessment, general treatment principles, and the three phases of treatment which include overcoming the phobia of attachment and attachment loss with the therapist, phobia of trauma derived mental actions, phobia of dissociative parts, phobia of traumatic memory, integration of the personality and overcoming the phobias of normal life.
