III. A Call to Arms• In 1774, the

First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia

• drafted a statement of grievances, and voted to form militias.

• In 1775 British troops went to seize colonial arms and ammunition in Concord, Mass. – Paul Revere and

William Dawes rode ahead to warn John Hancock and Sam Adams

The regulars are out!

The gunfire in Lexington was the start of the War for Independence. It is called the “shot heard around the world.”

• In June 1775, British and colonial forces clashed at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

• The British won, but the Americans had proven to be tough.
