Term 3 Week 6, 31st August 2017
Dear Parents,
A preliminary analysis of our school’s 2017 NAPLAN results
indicates very strong results. In particular, there is notable
improvement in the areas currently being targeted through
our Site Improvement Plan.
GGPS Year 7 Mean Score averages are higher than both
S.A. and Australian Mean Scores averages in all areas
(Numeracy, Reading, Spelling, Grammar & Writing).
GGPS Numeracy Mean Score averages are higher than SA
Mean Score averages in all Year levels 3, 5 & 7. These are
encouraging results in response to our ongoing
improvement agenda in Mathematics.
GGPS Mean Score averages are higher than our own
historical averages in Reading and Numeracy in all Year
levels 3, 5 & 7.
More GGPS students achieved results in the Higher Bands
in Reading and Numeracy in all Year levels 3, 5 & 7. Again,
encouraging results which affirm our current work to
increase the intellectual stretch provided for students.
NAPLAN individual reports will be distributed to students
tomorrow.

SAPSASA Girls Football Carnival
On Wednesday 2nd July we took a team of girls to the SAPSASA Football
carnival.
We played Fairview Park in the first game where we had lots of shots on
goal. It was quite windy and we had some trouble converting, but we still
won by a couple of goals.
In game two we played Ardtornish and just managed to sneak home in a
tight contest by 2 points.
Game three we played Surrey Downs. At this stage the girls were playing
some very good attacking footy. We won by 5 goals.
In game 4 we played St Davids, where we got a couple of goals early, in
the first half, then we kicked one goal into the wind. They fought back
with 2 quick goals and we hung on to win by 5 points.
The last game we came against Ridgehaven who were also undefeated.
After a tight first quarter, Ridgehaven broke away to win by 4 goals. Daisy
M was fierce at the contest all day and Riley was fantastic in defence.
Rachael, Imogen and Bailey were superb at tackling. Shakeya, Zoe,
Caitlin and Lara were very damaging in our forward line, with Shakeya
kicking 8 goals for the day. Lauren B was super in the ruck for us. Ashleigh
took the ball and ran the lines many times, and Kayley, Ella and Kate
showed great versatility at both ends of the ground.
Overall we finished 2nd. Many thanks go to Kelly for her support and all
the parents who came and supported us on the day.

Kelly’s News Have you ever had the experience of simply shaking your head at your child’s behaviour, feeling like
you must be from different planets – nothing they do or say makes sense to you! If so, please let me
assure you that you are not alone! I think every adult has experienced this at some stage with a child
that they live or work with. Interestingly, I think children sometimes go through the same thing when
looking at the adults in their lives. Children can feel that there are times that no one else really
understands them and the feelings that they are having and that can be a real challenge. These are
the times that I have been reminded of the movie “Freaky Friday” – if you’re as old as I am you
remember the original with Jodie Foster as well as the 2003 version with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay
Lohan. It’s the story of a mother and her teenage daughter who switch bodies for one very interesting
and memorable Friday.
If you have a child in upper primary years, I would encourage you to set up a date and watch it
together. You may be surprised at the conversations that take place afterwards! It’s a great lesson in
the value of empathy – literally walking in another person’s shoes and experiencing life as they do. It’s
not really realistic to expect our kids to understand and practice empathy without modelling it to them
first and the best place to start doing this is within our own family. What does this look like? We can start
by letting the other person know that we are here for them no matter what. Practicing active listening
is the next step – listening attentively and asking questions to help us understand what is being felt. It’s
important at this stage to remember that showing empathy doesn’t involve being judgemental or
problem solving. Finally, doing or saying something that will help the other person feel better is a great
way to be empathetic. Why not give this a try sometime this week. Like any life skill, the more we
practice the better we get and the more natural it becomes.
Parents in Education week promotes and highlights the importance of parents being engaged in their
child’s learning and education from birth through school, and to provide practical advice for parents
on how to support their child’s learning.
