Opening for GSID Alumni Association Student Grant Program The GSID Alumni Association was established with the goal of linking the graduates and current students while building a network among the global professional GSID alumni. In this regard, we are committed to start a “GSID Alumni Association Grant Program” to support GSID students’ multidisciplinary research and social activities by making use of the association fee collected from the members. Among the applications made, we will nominate a project (s). Application deadline is September 5th, 2014. We look forward to receive many applications. 1. Purpose This grant program is designed to support activities of GSID students and alumni that meet the GSID Alumni Association principles. * Article 2 (Purpose) of the GSID Alumni Association Regulations. The Association is concerned with the following purposes: 1. Promotion of mutual friendship and exchange among its members 2. Contribution to the progress of GSID 3. Promotion of international development studies 2. Activities covered by the grant All activities covered by the grant must be accomplished within one year from the day of the application's approval. (1) Research activity support: a characteristic research work carried out by GSID students or alumni, which requires support. (2) Social activity support: social contribution activities conducted by GSID students or alumni, which requires support. (3) Other kinds of support: projects which do not belong to either (1) or (2), but meet the GSID Alumni Association's philosophy. The GSID Alumni Association was established with the goal of linking the graduates and current students while building a network among the global professional GSID alumni. 1. Overview of activity: Conduct of Field Survey and interview of Key Informants (Research Area to be identified this coming Fall Semester) ① Name of activity: Conduct of Field Survey and Interview of Key Informants regarding the Determinants of Farmers’ Demand for Crop Insurance in the Philippines ②Activity summary: The researcher is interested in identifying the determinants of farmers’ demand for crop insurance in the Philippines. Specifically, the researcher would like to (1) identify the factors that influence farmers’ availment or non-availment of crop insurance in the country, (2) determine the most effective ways to improve the likelihood of farmers to purchase crop insurance, and (3) Explore the relationship of other risk coping mechanisms with crop insurance products and services. The results and findings obtained from the conduct of the field survey and interview of key informants will be used to analyze and identify the determinants of farmers’ demand for crop insurance in the Philippines. Policy recommendations will also be provided based on the result of the field survey.

Relevance to the GSID Alumni Association philosophy: My study will contribute to the GSID Alumni Association Philosophy by providing a good example of a multidisciplinary research study conducted in a developing country like the Philippines, and will help promote international development studies. Conducting the said activity will widen the horizon, understanding and experience of the researcher about the real situation of developing countries. This will help hone the researcher to becoming a more effective catalyst of development. Furthermore, sharing my experience to the GSID community and alumni association will help encourage other students to engage in the conduct of field survey, and experience rural life in developing countries. 6. Desired amount and breakdown of the use of grant (Describe the use of grant clearly) Desired amount: ¥123,000.00 - ¥147,000.00** Breakdown: Conduct of field survey: 16 days (Tentative, including 1 day pilot survey) Transportation (Plane ticket): = ¥25,000 Accomodation: ¥3000 x 16 = ¥48,000 Car Rent: ¥2500 x 16 = ¥40,000 Logistics: = ¥10,000 (For printing or survey questionnaires, and other materials needed) Payment to Translator/Research Assistant: ¥1500 x 16 = ¥24,000** (Depending on the research area. Activity period or actual date in case of holding an event: The actual field survey was conducted on 20 February – 17 March 2015 4. Summary of the activity output: A total of 82 rice farmers were surveyed. 70 survey questionnaires were included in the analysis of the study. Other questionnaires were not utilized due to missing data entries. Before and after the conduct of field survey, key informants’ interview were conducted. Concerned government entities (Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation and Department of Agriculture), Local Government Units (Municipality of Umingan and Barangay Cabangaran – Research Site), Microfinance Institution (Tulay sa Pag-unlad, Incorporated), and Banking Institution (LandBank of the Philippines) were interviewed to gather information as well as verify results of the survey. 5. Summary of the use of grant: The grant was used for the following purposes: Transportation (Plane ticket): = ¥42,000 Car Rent: ¥5,000 X 5 days = ¥25,000 Logistics: = ¥13,000 (For printing or survey questionnaires, omiyage (Japanese snacks) for respondents and key informants, and other materials needed for the survey)
