Feeling the impact of Hurricane Sandy on her friends and family, Betty Yip of the Class of 2015 rallied her classmates to help raise funds for disaster relief through an emergency bake sale, which raised $1,149.00 in 45 minutes in support of hurricane victims. “I am most grateful for my classmates. In a matter of 36 hours, I was able to mobilize my classmates to rise to the occasion. Everyone was so receptive, helpful, and generous with their time in such short notice.” A native of New York City, Betty notes that the devastating impact of the storm hit home when talking to family and friends about the conditions in their neighborhoods. A special thanks to all Penn Dental Medicine students, faculty, and staff who supported the bake sale: “it just goes to show what a big heart the SDM has,” adds Betty.

The D1’s are halfway done with their first year! I caught up with a few of our Class of 2016-ers to talk about how they deal with stress in dental school. When you have 17 exams in one semester and see 35

more on the way, you sometimes need to put on the brakes and step away from the desk. -YK

Janet Sung, Orange County, CA Stress-buster of choice: Running “What keeps my stress down is putting dental school in perspective. School is just one part of my life, and I remind myself to pursue hobbies and interests outside of school. I like to run because I feel like I'm running away from everything that usually occupies my mind. And I actually find the rhythmic breathing patterns and heartbeats relaxing! I am glad I’ve met so many friends here who like to run (Janet is second on the left with Liz, Tali, and Tina in this picture).”

Ashley Abraham, Newtown, PA De-stress Ashley style: Laugh, Vent, Pray “I get stressed when I feel imbalanced. I find myself spending less time doing things I enjoy; so any less-than-ideal grades or tough study sessions drain me. I try to keep things in perspective by talking to family and friends who remind me there is life outside of dental school. I also rely on my faith by reading the Bible and praying to keep me centered when the daily grind gets to be too much.”

Mehreen Kassoo, Deltona, FL Unwinds by: Going to the gym for fitness classes “My new favorite fitness classes are spinning and BodyPump! I love FaceTime-ing with my little nieces and nephews back in Florida. They always lift my spirits every time they ask how “teef school” is. What continues to motivate me is that knowing I am one step closer to becoming a dentist each day. I keep close correspondence with a free dental clinic I used to volunteer at in Florida. I can’t wait to go back and provide services to this community as a dentist.”

Pascal Wollach, Calgary, Alberta Stays sane in dental school by: Having a safe zone “I never study in my room because I want it to be a place where I could relax, unwind, and not think about school. I always go to the library or a coffee shop to study.”

Managing Stress c/o 2016, cont’d…

Mark Guevarra, Vancouver, British Columbia Calms down with: Long, hot baths, bubbles, candles, and Kenny G (He clarifies on the radio, not in the bathtub). “Despite all the dental school stress, it's my classmates that keep me going. Whether they know it or not, they've been excellent motivators. It's comforting to know that no matter how stressed we get, we'll always each other to lean on. I make sure to stay on top of updates on our Facebook group, and pray to the hurricane Gods to postpone exams.”

Jessica Listwa, East Brunswick, NJ Relaxes with: Baking “Baking gives me a reason to stop what I’m doing, spend time with friends and enjoy the simple things in life that are easily forgotten, especially when I’m stressing over the next approaching test.” (On the right, Jessica made this birthday cupcake for Zesheng.)

Sharon Aradine, Madison, AL Gets in the zen-zone with: Traveling and daydreaming “Since all my Philly friends are in dental school, I escape out of the city to relax. When I can't make it out of the city I daydream. Recently I spent a good week looking for a cat a few hours a day. Even though I wasn't going to get a cat, it was fun looking at pictures of fuzz balls. Meow meow meow.”

Alex McClure, Vienna, VA D-school mantra: Weekends are for FUN “Enjoying the weekend is one of the best ways to keep my stress level down. I can never be productive when I study on Friday or Saturday, so I forget about school and do something fun instead. A good weekend is the best way to reset my head and prepare for a productive week. When Thursday rolls around and the stress builds up pretty quickly, I rely on pictures of puppies and other fuzzy animals to take the stress off.”

Kelby Okada, Wheaton, IL De-stress catalysts: The gym. Sleep. Good food. (Shown after his de-stressing routine on the left) “I am motivated by knowing what I am capable (or want to be capable) of and pushing myself to achieve my goals. I'm an “all or nothing” kind of person. I focus on my routine, which on weekdays is eating healthy, going to the gym then hitting the books. I recoup on Fridays and Saturdays then on Sundays I am back to working.”

“One of my best friends from home actually got this Pizza Soup recipe from her orthodontist when we had braces in middle school. Her mom used to make it for us, and I made sure I got the recipe from her before I left for college. The Olive Chicken recipe is one of my aunt’s recipes. I love her cooking, and she always has good recipes for comfort food, many of which my grandparents used to make. This one has several different flavors that come together really well and is great for having company over for dinner!”

Zymurgists of Penn Dental

Crystal Kim ‘15 and her fellow beer enthusiast classmates founded Zymurgists of Penn Dental in 2011. It all started with a simple purchase of a home brewing kit and since then, the kettle never stopped boiling. We are by no means master brewers or beer connoisseurs, but we all share the appreciation for quality, handcrafted draughts and the art of home brewing. We embrace the constant learning of the craft and seek to teach others the science of home brewing. Most importantly, we are here to have fun and enjoy the beer we brew. When times are tough (yes, dental school can be rough), just listen to the words of Charlie Papazain:

“Relax, Don’t Worry, and Have a Homebrew.”
