Congratulations!purchased a rock & roll monster. The Peavey 5150 is the result ofan extensive research anddevelopment project with guitarlegend Edward Van Ha/en toproduce the ultimate rock & rollguitar amp. You’re ready toexperience super rock crunch,harmonic-rich sustain, andscreaming metal drive like you’venever heard from another amp.

Before you begin, please takethe time to read this operatingguide, familiarizing yourself withthe 5750’s controls and functions.

INPUTSThe 5150’s input block featuresHIGH [l] and NORMAL [2] gaininputs. The HIGH gain input hastwice the gain of the NORMALgain input and should be usedwhen maximum overdrive isdesired. When both inputs areused simultaneously, the 5150automatically switches to thenormal gain mode (6 dB pad).Situations where both inputs areused at once (alternating betweentwo guitars on stage using bothinputs, etc.) should be avoided ifpeak overdrive is expected fromthe amp. Experimentation withyour particular guitar/pickup intoeach input will determine whichinput is best for your sound.

CHAMUEL SELECTSMITCHAllows selection of the RHYTHM orLEAD channel. Depressing theswitch to the “in” position activatesthe LEAD channel. The red LEDlight will illuminate to indicate thatthe LEAD channel is active. In the“out” position the RHYTHMchannel is activated and the greenLED illuminates. Channels may beremotely selected using the5150’s footswitch. If remoteselection is desired the channelselect switch must be set to the“in” position (LEAD channel).

lEADPRE& PDSTGAIRThe LEAD CHANNEL PRE GAIN[8] controls the input level andworks with the LEAD CHANNELPOST GAIN [13] to determine theoverall volume/overdrive of theLEAD channel. Lower settings ofthe PRE GAIN control produce arelatively clean, undistorted soundwhile the middle to high settingsproduce harmonically rich distortionand screaming overdrive/sustain.Since both PRE and POST GAINcontrols work in “combo,” a basicrule-of-thumb set-up procedure is tobegin with both controls in thelower settings (0 - 2). Using thePRE GAIN control, dial in the

amount of overdrive/sustain youwant for the LEAD channel. Then, with the POST GAIN control adjustfor overall volume.

RHYTHMPRE& POSTGAINThe RHYTHM channel PRE [4] andPOST GAIN [12] operate in thesame manner as the LEAD channelgain controls. For mostapplications, the RHYTHM channelshould be set up with the PREGAIN at the lower, “cleaner”settings (0 - 4) and the POST GAINset for overall volume. TheRHYTHM channel can beconverted to a second “lead”channel by activating the CRUNCHSWITCH [6].

BRIGHTSWITCHActivates a preset boost in thetreble frequencies (6 dB at 2 kHz)and affects only the rhythmchannel.

CRUNCH 'SELECTSWITCHBoosts the gain of the rhythmchannel to create a second “lead”channel. Depress to the “in”position to activate.

The 5150’s equalization blockfeatures passive LOW, MID, andHIGH EQ that is custom tailoredto Edward Van Halen’s sound.

RESONANCE / PRESENCEUnique to the 5150, theRESONANCE [14] control can beset to boost the gain of the poweramp in the low frequencies at theresonance/attentuation point ofthe speaker cabinet. In simpleterms, the RESONANCE controlworks like a low EQ to offset Iow-end frequency drop-out. ThePRESENCE [15] control works inthe same manner, boosting thehigh frequencies. Experimentationusing your particular speakercabinet along with personal tastewill determine your setting forthese important controls.

STANDBY SW/TCRAllows the 5150 to be placed in anon-operational standby mode. When the standby switch isactivated the tubes remain hot andready for instantaneous operation, eliminating warm-up time. TheSTANDBY LED indicator light [16]will illuminate when the amp is inthe operational mode.

POWER SW/TtNSupplies power to the unit.Depressed to the “ON” position, the POWER LED indicator light [17]will illuminate indicating power isbeina suDPlied to the unit.

2l?FUSEA 5 amp fuse is located within the

A cap of the fuseholder. It must be

A’replaced with the same type andvalue in order to avoid damage tothe equipment and to preventvoiding the warranty. If the amprepeatedly blows fuses, it shouldbe taken to a qualified servicecenter for repair.

AWARNING: The fuse should onlybe replaced when the power cordhas been disconnected from its

21

power source.

f/NE CORD (120 V units only)For your safety, we haveincorporated a 3-wire line (mains)

A cable with proper groundingfacilities. It is not advisable toremove the ground pin under anycircumstances. If it is necessaryto use the 5150 without propergrounding facilities, suitablegrounding adaptors should beused. Greatly reduced shockhazard exists when the unit isoperated with the propergrounded receptacles.

GROUND SWITCHThree position, rocker-type switchwhich, for most applications, shouldbe operated in the center (zero)position. If hum or noise is noticedcoming from the speakerenclosure(s) with the ground switchin the center position, place theground switch to positive ornegative (+ or -) to minimize hum.Should a hum/noise problemcontinue, consult your authorizedPeavey Dealer, the Peavey factory,or a qualified service technician.NOTE: The ground switch is notfunctional on 220/240 volt models.

EFFECTS SEND / EFFECTS RETURNSignals are supplied to outboardeffects or signal processing unitsby patching from the EFFECTSSEND [23] output into the outboardunit(s) and back into the EFFECTSRETURN [24] input using shieldedcable with l/4” phono jacks. Onlynon gain effects devices (chorus, reverb, delay, etc.) should be usedin the effects loop. Remote (on/off)selection of outboard effectsdevices can be achieved using the5 150’s footswitch.

25 PREANPOUTThis output can be used to send apreamped signal from the5150 to a mixing console, taperecorder, etc., using shieldedcable. Patching from the PREAMPOUT does not affect the normaloperation of the amplifier.

Whenthe footswitch is plugged into theremote footswitch jack, the channelselect switch [3] must be pressedto the “in” position for remoteselection to operate. Remoteselection of the LEAD or RHYTHMchannel (left footswitch button) oroutboard devices in the effectsloop (right footswitch button) ispossible with the remote footswitch.

When connecting the amplifier to the speaker enclosure, make sure to set the impedance selector switch on the rear u0 0 :,“:tCH

of the unit to the impedance that matches your enclosure. When two enclosures of equal impedance are used, set theswitch to one half the impedance of one enclosure (e.g. two16 ohm enclosures: set switch to 8 ohms; two 8 ohmenclosures: set switch to 4 ohms). The 5150 is designed tooperate into a minimum of 4 ohms.
