ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS
The customer must provide 120 volt, 20 amp, and 60 Hz electrical power. If an extension cord is used between the source and the machine, it should be a minimum 12 gauge wire to keep the voltage loss down and for electrical safety reasons.

INSTALLATION
The Cut to Length (CTL) that you have just received is fully assembled and ready to be put into production. Due to shipment vibration and handling, the machine should be checked to ensure all screws and bolts are tight. Remove the cover to the electrical controls and visually inspect that all parts are in place and secure. If the machine was damaged in shipment, contact the carrier first to report the damage and then Rapid-Air.
CAUTION — The CTL machine is top heavy when not sitting on its base legs. Use extreme caution when moving this machine.
Install machine on a level surface with sufficient clearance for loading and unloading process material. The machine should be secured to the floor through the 4 holes provided in the feet of the machine using 7/16 tie-down bolts. Or, can be installed using 1/2-13 leveling bolts and machine pads. The pads keep the machine from walking during operation and also act as a noise reduction device.

CTL OPERATION Your CTL machine comes equipped with a keypad control. All CTL controls can be adjusted through this keypad.
To power up the CTL, remove plug from air filter canister and insert male fitting. Connect air and flip the power switch on the left of the control box.

KEYPAD FUNCTIONS Power Switch: Located on the left of the control box.
Feed: Material is fed from air feeder into the cutter to be cut.
Cut: The cutter is energized and the fed material is cut
Single Cycle: Single feeding and cutting operation.
Count Display: Displays the total count of cycles, the batch count, and the number of batch cycles. Max count is 999,999.
Total Reset: Resets the total count, batch count, and batch cycle count to zero.
Diagnostics: Indicates the status of the feed, slide, and cutter.
Cut Time: Sets the time the cutter needs to be energized along with delay after the cut.
Clamp Air On/Off: Turns the air feed on or off.
F1, F2, F3, and F4/Stop: These keys are used to select the operation from the display. Each function key has its own operation as described on the display during operation.
Data Entry Keys (1-9, ., Enter): Number pad is used to input values to the control. For example: job number, feed length, cut time, etc.

AIR FEED OPERATION
Stock Guide Rollers: The stock guide rollers are adjusted by loosening the screws and moving the rollers along the slot to the desired position, then re-tightening the screws. For best results the stock should be centrally located in the feed.
Feed Length Adjustment: The notches in the guide rail provide for coarse adjustment. First remove feed clamp and stock clamp. Second, loosen all screws securing the three bridges. Now you can remove stop block clamps and move stop block to desired location, then re-install clamps. You will need to relocate the stop block bridge to another position on the upper guide rail to match the new location of the stop block. Secure the remaining bridges and reinstall the feed and stock clamp. The final (fine adjustment) is made by the adj. screw in the stop block. After final adjustment has been made, secure adj. screw with locking nut located at the rear of the stop block. See next page for diagram.
Setup: With air off, insert stock between the stock guide rollers and then pass the stock under the feed clamp. Lift the stock clamp and push the stock through to the starting position. Turn air on, install safety guards, your feed is now ready for operation.
Speed Adjustment: The speed adjusting screw on all Rapid-Air feeds adjusts the forward speed of the slide block when feeding stock into a die. High accuracy under special conditions can thus be maintained by eliminating inertial slippage caused by oily or heavy stock. The speed adjusting screw is located on the top of the main body, opposite the actuating valve. Adjust for slower speeds by turning the screw clockwise. Rapid-Air feeds are shipped with the speed adjusting screw set to provide the best operating conditions for the majority of applications.

AIR FEED OPERATION
Safety Requirements: The use of a safety guard is recommended to prevent operator injury. Rapid-Air manufactures safety guards for all Rapid-Air model air feeds. When using an electric valve, a safety switch is recommended for the operator to disconnect power when servicing equipment. The use of a 3 way shut-off valve is required to be installed at the feed so the operator can shut off air and purge the feed of air before servicing the feed or press. A 2 way valve is not sufficient as it will only shut off air and not release the air in the feed. A quick disconnect coupling should also be used behind the shut-off valve for easy removal of the feed from the press. Make certain the slide block is forward (at main body) before turning air on. If an electric valve or an electrical circuit is used on or with the feed, it must be wired through the safety disconnects of the press it is used on. The feed should always be controlled by the press.

AIR FEED TROUBLESHOOTING
Refer to diagrams on page 25 & 26 for troubleshooting section.
Note: Refer to Rapid-Air exploded parts drawing of Air Feeds to identify item numbers
listed below.
1. Feed and stock clamps work, but slide block does not move when actuating
valve is depressed.
a. Pilot operated valve (item #39) is stuck, either by grit, swollen nylon or
swollen o-rings.
2. Excessive leakage of air from exhaust hole beneath speed adjusting screw when
actuating valve is in up position.
a. Poppet (item #40) not seating on bottom of cartridge hole - check for grit
or chips.
b. Leaking o-rings #84, #85, #88, #90, #100, and #103. Check for wear.
3. Excessive leakage of air from exhaust hole, also sluggish operation of feed
clamp pistons with actuating valve in up position.
a. Leaking of o-rings #85 and #90, check for wear.
4. Excessive leakage of air from exhaust hole when actuating valve is in down
position. Note: a slight amount of air leakage is normal in this position.
a. Tight o-rings or grit around pilot operated valve (item #39) may prevent it
from moving its full stroke.
b. Worn poppet (item #40).
c. Poppet (item #40) is installed backwards.
5. Stock clamp does not move up and down when actuating valive is depressed
and other operations appear normal.
a. Worn o-ring #96 around O.D. of stock clamp pistons.
6. Excessive leakage of air from actuating valve vent hole when actuating valve is in
the up position.
a. O-ring #103 beneath actuating valve retainer (item #31c) is leaking. Install
o-ring beneath retainer, not in air groove.
7. Gradually Reduced Speed.
a. Lack of oil.
b. Low viscosity oil.
c. Speed adjusting screw #67 turned in too far.
d. Oversized poppet #40.

8. Excessive leakage of air from pilot operated valve vent hole on side of feed.a. Leaking of o-rings #100, #101, or #102.
9. Cushion pistons #34 act too slow and provide too much cushion.a. Excessive oil, reduce supply.
10. Mist of oil coming from exhaust hole.a. Excessive oil, reduce supply.
11. Feed has difficulty pushing last part of progression.a. Feed is not in line with die. A slight angular adjustment of the feed will
reduce the binding of the stock on the die guides.12. Under Feeding.
a. Insufficient air pressure.b. Feed is not in line with the die.c. Stock and feed clamps are loose.d. Feed is not lubricated.e. Stock is excessively dirty. Dirt may be present between slide block and
main body.f. Feed may be feeding before punches are clear from stock or die. Adjust
amount of depression of actuating valve.g. Feed may be operating too slow. Turn speed adjustment screw counter
clockwise to increase speed.h. Cambered stock. Use special stock clamp.i. Interference of feed clamp pistons not allowing sufficient clamp pressure.
13. Over feeding.a. Stock is excessively dirty or oily.b. Feed is operating too fast. Turn speed adjusting screw clockwise to slow
feed down.c. Stock has large slitting burr. Check clearance between clamps and stock.d. Stock and feed clamps may be loose.

14. Slide lock will move out but will not return without hesitation.a. Check speed adjusting screw #67.b. Check pilot operated valve #39. Swollen o-ring could be binding until
pressure build up breaks it free. Check poppet #40.15. Feed acts sluggish on startup, acts fine after running for a while.
a. Check pilot operated valve #39 for o-ring binding. Valve should movefreely in cartridge #32.

AIR FEED MAINTENANCE
O-Rings: The “O” Rings furnished with Rapid-Air feeds are made of a Buna NCompound designed to give long life on service with air, oil, and water. This rubbercompound features high abrasion resistance and good dimensional stability if therecommendations listed below are followed.
Oils: Paraffin base oils in general will give the best service. The viscosity should be 140 - 170 S.S.U., the API gravity 29.5 minimum and the aniline point between 150 F and 210 F. Variation of the aniline point from the limits given is likely to cause either shrinkage or stretching of the “O” Rings. Detergent motor oils and all other oils designed for automotive use are generally unreliable in chemical makeup for use with rubber compounds. Spindle oils are too low in viscosity.

CUTTER OPERATION
The cutter solenoid valve is energized to move the blade down. Blade is retracted by de-energizing valve. Compression springs also assist in retracting the blade.

CUTTER MAINTENANCE
Cutter Blade Removal: Remove socket head cap screws holding each blade. Each blade has four cutting edges available before sharpening or replacement is necessary. You will need to remove the exit guard and scrap chute to access these blades. Refer to cutter assembly drawing in this manual for further detail.
Cutter Blade Sharpening: After removal, blades can be sharpened by surface grinding surfaces "A" & "B". After grinding, these surfaces should be parallel to each other within .001”.
Blade Adjustment: The upper blade can be lowered manually with the eccentric cam located on the exit side of the cutter. The purpose for this manual operation is for horizontal blade clearance adjustment. Blade clearance affects the quality of the cut. Cutters are shipped with the proper blade clearance from the factory. To adjust blade clearance follow the steps listed below.
1. Manually cam upper blade down.2. Remove entrance guard.3. Loosen lower blade holder screws.4. Move lower blade holder in or out with blade adjustment knobs.5. For most applications use .002” shim stock as a spacer between upper and
lower blades to set blade clearance.6. When desired blade clearance is achieved, tighten lower blade holder screws.7. Perform a test cut by manually cutting bond paper.8. Reinstall entrance guard. Note: both entrance and exit guards have an interlock
that disables the air circuit if guards are removed.
Bumpers: Occassionally check bumpers for wear. Upper bumper (35900044) and lower bumper (35900045) help reduce noise and shock in the system.
O-rings: In the case of a leak, refer to the cutter parts list for the corresponding o-rings.
